SummaryBackgroundThe clinical presentation of COVID-19 in patients admitted to hospital is heterogeneous. We aimed to determine whether clinical phenotypes of patients with COVID-19 can be derived from clinical data, to assess the reproducibility of these phenotypes and correlation with prognosis, and to derive and validate a simplified probabilistic model for phenotype assignment. Phenotype identification was not primarily intended as a predictive tool for mortality.MethodsIn this study, we used ...

The transcription factor EB (TFEB) has emerged as a master regulator of lysosomal biogenesis, exocytosis, and autophagy, promoting the clearance of substrates stored in cells. c-Abl is a tyrosine kinase that participates in cellular signaling in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. In this study, we explored the connection between c-Abl and TFEB. Here, we show that under pharmacological and genetic c-Abl inhibition, TFEB translocates into the nucleus promoting the expression of its target ...

In potato (Solanum tuberosum) crops, the use of fungicides to control some diseases is widespread; however, it has been reported that this practice can modify the potato polyphenolic content, and new strategies oriented to the potato defense system are necessary. One alternative is the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) to improve the defense mechanisms of plants. In this study, phenolic profiles and antioxidant activities in leaves of three potato genotypes (CB2011-509, CB2011-104, and VR808) ...

Cucumber fruit is rich in fiber, carbohydrates, protein, magnesium, iron, vitamin B, vitamin C, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants. Agrochemical-based production of cucumber has tripled yields; however, excessive synthetic fertilization has caused problems in the accumulation of salts in the soil and has increased production costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on cucumber fruit growth and quality ...

We study the labor market returns to a state-guaranteed loan used to finance university degrees in Chile. Using a regression discontinuity design, we show that marginally eligible students forgo vocational education in favor of university education but reduce their probability of graduation. Even though university loan takers accumulate more student debt, their labor market outcomes are not different from those of ineligible students. We find suggestive evidence that the lower quality of the receiving ...

Exposure of white wine to oxygen can cause detrimental effects, such as loss of sensorial characteristics. New antecedents, to the oxidation of wine, establish the importance of the formation of metallic complexes with compounds with adjacent hydroxyls. These complexes could reduce iron, promoting the formation of radicals through the Fenton reaction. The formation of hydroxyl radical (OH) induced by air was found in all 18 white wines analysed by electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. ...

Phenolic composition of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) with colored flesh has been previously reported, highlighting their anthocyanin composition. However, there is less information available about the profiles and concentrations of hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (HCADs) in these potatoes. It is remarkable that after frying, the HCAD concentrations increased ...

During periods of cold, small endotherms depend on a continuous supply of food and energy to maintain euthermic body temperature (T(b)), which can be challenging if food is limited. In these conditions, energy-saving strategies are critical to reduce the energetic requirements for survival. Drug craving critically depends on the function of the interoceptive insular cortex, and may be triggered by contextual cues. However, the role of the insula in the long-term memory linking context with drug craving remains unknown. Such a memory trace probably resides in some neocortical region, much like other declarative memories. Studies in humans and rats suggest that the insula may include such a region. Summary Thlaspi arvense (field pennycress) is being domesticated as a winter annual oilseed crop capable of improving ecosystems and intensifying agricultural productivity without increasing land use. It is a selfing diploid with a short life cycle and is amenable to genetic manipulations, making it an accessible field‐based model species for genetics and epigenetics. The availability of a high‐quality reference genome is vital for understanding pennycress physiology and for clarifying its evolutionary ...
