Dispersion-based spectroscopic techniques present many desirable features when compared with classical absorption spectroscopy implementations, such as the normalization-free operation and the extended dynamic range. In this Letter, we present a new sensor design based on direct optical processing for heterodyne conversion in tunable laser chirped dispersion spectroscopy that allows sensor implementations using low-speed photodetectors and low-cost FM demodulators. The performance of the new setup ...

In this paper, a multiheterodyne architecture for molecular dispersion spectroscopy based on a coherent dual-comb source generated using a single continuous wave laser and electro-optic modulators is presented and validated. The phase-sensitive scheme greatly simplifies previous dual-comb implementations by the use of an electro-optic dual comb and by phase-locking all the signal generators of the setup eliminating, in this way, the necessity of any reference optical path currently mandatory in ...

Marine fish farms could cause environmental disturbances on the sediment due to uneaten food and fish faeces that impact the marine benthos. Polychaete assemblages are considered good indicators of environmental perturbations. The present study aimed to establish groups of polychaetes as potential indicators of fish farm pollution. This study was carried out in ten fish farms along the Spanish coast. Changes in polychaete assemblage were analyzed with meta-analysis and multivariate techniques. Abundance, ...

Two south-west Mediterranean fish farms were monitored over a period of 22 months to test if sea-cage fish farms act as settlement habitats for juvenile fish. Twenty juvenile fish species were found to settle at farms throughout the year. Fish assemblage composition varied markedly over time and was dependent on the spawning period for each species. The most abundant species were Oblada melanura, Atherina sp., Diplodus sargus, Boops boops and Liza aurata. Up to 3783 ± 1730 individuals/cage were found ...

The influence of sea-cage salmon farms in increasing the parasite loads of wild salmonids has received considerable attention due to the potential negative consequences for both natural populations and cultivated stock. However, studies dealing with the parasitological loads of reared fish of other species and their relation with farm-associated wild fish are scarce. Fish-farming structures are widespread in coastal waters and are highly attractive to wild fish. Several studies have estimated that tons to tens of tons of wild fish aggregate around fish farms. These estimates assumed that the majority of wild fish are concentrated immediately beneath farms, although this assumption has never been explicitly tested. We tested the hypothesis that abundances of wild fish would be greatest immediately beneath farms and progressively diminish with distance at 4 full- ...

Abstract The diet of juveniles of Pelates sexlineatus was examined at six estuaries, separated by tens to hundreds of kilometres, and two sites within each estuary, separated by hundreds of metres to kilometres. Fish were collected in Zostera capricorni seagrass meadows along the coast of New South Wales (Australia). Spatial variability in diet was compared with the abundance of prey. Pelates sexlineatus had a broad diet (27 different prey) but generally preferred crustaceans (harpacticoid copepods, ...

Along the western Mediterranean Sea coast, many artificial reefs have been deployed as an anti-trawling device to protect seagrass ( Posidonia oceanica ) meadows. These reefs may have important effects on the structure of the associated fish assemblages. Marine protected areas (MPAs) could be useful as fisheries management tools for the exportation of pelagic eggs, larvae and adult fish. A decreasing gradient of fish biomass across MPAs boundary may indicate export. We determine whether gradients of decreasing biomass of fish assemblage occurred in Tabarca Marine Reserve over two habitats with different continuity across the boundaries, to test if the patchy nature of the marine environment might act as a barrier for the fish export. In general, ...
