A retrospective review of 72 cases of Charnley low friction arthroplasty revised for stem loosening, has identified a number of "at risk" factors. These were: previous hip surgery and, in radiographs taken at one year, demarcation of the distal cement and fracture of the cement near the tip of the stem. Separation of the back of the stem from the cement, as an isolated feature, was not considered significant. Endosteal cavitation of the femoral shaft, rare in the first year, indicated loosening of ...

Abstract Aim To evaluate the extent to which ant species richness in Neotropical savannas varies with macrogeographic variables, and to identify the potential climatic drivers of such variation. Location The Cerrado savanna biome of central Brazil, in a region spanning ca. 20° of latitude and 18°of longitude. Methods Standardized sampling of the arboreal and ground‐dwelling faunas was performed in 29 well‐preserved savanna sites using pitfall traps. Species were classified according to their habitat ...

Chronic pelvic pain is a debilitating disease that directly impacts on quality of life and generates costs for health services. Nutcracker Syndrome is an important cause of pelvic pain and consists of a set of signs secondary to compression of the left renal vein, most commonly between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta. Treatment remains controversial and varies depending on the patient's clinical severity. However, endovascular treatment with renal vein stenting has achieved excellent ...

Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and it is considered to be the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection in the world. Since the 1960s, nitroimidazoles such as metronidazole are the drugs of choice for the treatment of trichomoniasis, but many adverse effects and allergic reactions may result from their use. Reports of metronidazole-resistant infections also highlight the importance for the search of new anti-T. vaginalis agents. Considering this, ...

One promising management strategy for mosquito control is the utilization of a mixture of L. sphaericus and B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis insecticidal toxins. From this set, Bin and Cyt1Aa toxins synergize and display toxicity to resistant C. quinquefasciatus and to A. aegypti larvae, whose midgut cells lack Bin toxin receptors. Our data set provides evidence that functional Cyt1Aa is essential for internalization of Bin or its BinA subunit into such cells, but binding interaction between ...

In the present work, the morphology and composition of osmium deposits formed in submonolayer amount on Pt(1 0 0) and Pt(1 1 1) single crystal surfaces either by spontaneous deposition or by electrolysis at 50 mV in different deposition times (tdep), were studied. The cyclic voltammetric curves for Pt(1 0 0)/Os and Pt(1 1 1)/Os were recorded in the potential range where the oxidation of deposited osmium species occurs, which suggests that the chemical composition of the deposits is a mixture of metallic ...

The inverse relationship between helminth infections and the development of immune-mediated diseases is a cornerstone of the hygiene hypothesis and studies were carried out to elucidate the mechanisms by which helminth-derived molecules can suppress immunological disorders. This paper presents a rational and efficient probabilistic framework to address the uncertainties of geotechnical properties and the stratigraphic profile in a tunneling-induced building damage assessment. The probabilistic approach is based on the application of a hybrid point estimation method that employs a reduced number of computations without losing accuracy. The framework also relies on sensitivity analyses using tornado diagrams. Analyses of ground movements and building displacements are ...

Preventing global warming requires overall cooperation. Contributions will depend on the risk of future losses, which plays a key role in decision-making. Here, we discuss an evolutionary game theoretical model in which decisions within small groups under high risk and stringent requirements toward success significantly raise the chances of coordinating to save the planet's climate, thus escaping the tragedy of the commons. We discuss both deterministic dynamics in infinite populations, and stochastic ...
