The annular vault with basket-handle profile in the cortile of Carlos V palace is a self-stable structural system once the construction is finished. The forces to the exterior are absorbed by the weight of the perimetral masses, while the efforts to the interior are absorbed by a ring of voussoirs that forms a flat arch supported by columns, constituting a force system whose resultant is zero. Nevertheless, during the construction process the structure is unstable. Given the constructive complexity, ...

Although the WHO recommends the use of genotyping as a tool for epidemiological surveillance for mumps, limited data on mumps virus (MV) genotype circulation that may be used to trace the patterns of virus spread are available. We describe the first complete series of data from Spain. The small hydrophobic region was sequenced from 237 MV-positive samples from several regions of Spain collected between 1996 and 2007. Six different genotypes were identified: A, C, D (D1), G (G1, G2), H (H1, H2), and ...

There is an increasing demand for accurate, non-invasive and self-reference temperature measurements as technology progresses into the nanoscale. This is particularly so in micro- and nanofluidics where the comprehension of heat transfer and thermal conductivity mechanisms can play a crucial role in areas as diverse as energy transfer and cell physiology. Here we present two luminescent ratiometric nanothermometers based on a magnetic core coated with an organosilica shell co-doped with Eu3+ and ...

We report detailed transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy∕energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (STEM∕EDS) studies on ferrihydrite nanoparticles in an organic-inorganic matrix. The Fourier transform of HRTEM images indicates the existence of six-line ferrihydrite. Combined STEM and EDS studies give further confirmation of the presence of iron in the observed particles and its absence in the matrix. The ...

The continuous decrease on the geometric size of electronic devices and integrated circuits generates higher local power densities and localized heating problems that cannot be characterized by conventional thermographic techniques. Here, a self-referencing intensity-based molecular thermometer involving a di-ureasil organic-inorganic hybrid thin film co-doped with Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) tris (β-diketonate) chelates is used to obtain the temperature map of a FR4 printed wiring board with spatio-temporal ...

Abstract For several years, reports have been published about fluctuations in measured radioactive decay time-series and in some instances linked to astrophysical as well as classical environmental influences. Anomalous behaviors of radioactive decay measurement and measurement of capacitance inside and outside a modified Faraday cage were documented by our group in previous work. In the present report, we present an in-depth analysis of our measurement with regard to possible correlations with ...

The chemical reactions between poly (acrylic acid) and cobalt (III) oxide and between poly (acrylic acid) and cobalt (III) fluoride were studied by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The results demonstrate the formation of cements between the metal and PAA aqueous solutions. Structural information was obtained from the observed frequency shifts of the absorption bands of the carboxylates groups in the cobalt (III) poly (acrylate) relative to those recorded for the purely ionic form. The results ...

We show that the magnetic anisotropy energy of antiferromagnetic ferrihydrite depends on the square root of the nanoparticles' volume, using a method based on the analysis of statistical distributions. The size distribution was obtained by transmission electron microscopy, and the anisotropy energy distributions were obtained from ac magnetic susceptibility and magnetic relaxation. The square root dependence corresponds to random local anisotropy, whose average is given by its variance, and can ...
