Information literacy forms a key concept within Library and Information Science, where it forms the focus of scholarship, conferences, journals and teaching librarian practice, alike. However, little is known about how other fields and disciplines have employed these outputs within their own research and practice. This paper examines how the concept of information literacy has been leveraged into the discourses of non-Library and Information Science disciplinary landscapes. This is achieved through ...

Small bowel obstruction is a common surgical emergency, and is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality across the world. The literature provides little information on the conservatively managed group. The aim of this study was to describe the burden of small bowel obstruction in the UK. This prospective cohort study was conducted in 131 acute hospitals in the UK between January and April 2017, delivered by trainee research collaboratives. Adult patients with a diagnosis of mechanical ...

Xueliang Liu, Wade M. Hicks, Pamela A. Silver, Jeffrey C. Way,

The acyl carrier protein (ACP) is an essential and ubiquitous component of microbial synthesis of fatty acids, the natural precursor to biofuels. Natural fatty acids usually contain long chains of 16 or more carbon atoms. Shorter carbon chains, with increased fuel volatility, are desired for internal combustion engines. Engineering the length specificity of key proteins in fatty acid metabolism, such as ACP, may enable microbial synthesis of these shorter chain fatty acids. We constructed a homology ...

Previous work in our laboratory demonstrated that Ro15-4513, a partial inverse benzodiazepine agonist, decreases self-administration of ethanol (ETOH) in rats maintained on a two-bottle regmine of a saccharin ethanol solution (ES) and water over a 35-day consumption period. The present study extended the consumption period to 60 days and examined the effects of Ro15-4513 (2.5 mg/kg), flumazenil (Ro15-1788) (8.0 mg/kg), and Ro15-4513 in combination with Ro15-1788 on the time course of ETOH self-administration. ...

Sandee L. Hicks-Moore, Pamela Pastirik,

Today, the complexities in the health care system are challenging nurses to be skillful and knowledgeable critical thinkers and decision makers. To adequately prepare future nurses to meet the challenges, nurse educators must nurture and facilitate critical thinking. One strategy believed to promote critical thinking in nursing education is concept maps. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the level of critical thinking in the clinical concept maps developed by second year baccalaureate ...

Abstract Microbial population growth is typically measured when cells can be directly observed, or when death is rare. However, neither of these conditions hold for the mammalian gut microbiota, and, therefore, standard approaches cannot accurately measure the growth dynamics of this community. Here we introduce a new method (distributed cell division counting, DCDC) that uses the accurate segregation at cell division of genetically encoded fluorescent particles to measure microbial growth rates. ...

The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of the Tobacco Tactics program in three Veterans Affairs hospitals. In this effectiveness trial, inpatient nurses were educated to provide the Tobacco Tactics intervention in Ann Arbor and Detroit, while Indianapolis was the control site (N = 1,070). Smokers were surveyed and given cotinine tests. The components of the intervention included nurse counseling, brochure, DVD, manual, pharmaceuticals, 1-800-QUIT-NOW card, and post-discharge telephone calls. ...

Two members of the pentraxin family of proteins, C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid P component (SAP), bind to chromatin and may be involved in the solubilization and clearance of nuclear material. Previous studies demonstrated that CRP binding to chromatin is mediated by histones. SAP differs from CRP in being able to bind to DNA, but SAP binding to histones has not been reported. CRP is an activator of the classical C pathway, and C-dependent cleavage of chromatin in the presence of CRP ...

Structural aspects of the interaction between Escherichia coli transcription termination factor rho and RNA have been investigated, using nuclease protection assays and electron microscopy. A synthetic RNA, poly(rC), has been used as a substrate for these studies, since it binds tightly to rho and acts as a strong activator of the ATPase activity of rho. Digestion of oligo(rC)-rho complexes with ribonuclease A yields oligo(rC) fragments with a maximum length of 70 to 80 nucleotide residues. Electron ...

Stress ulcer is a dangerous complication for the critically ill patient. Prophylaxis with antacids can undoubtedly reduce this risk, if gastric pH is maintained above 3.5. Histamine receptor antagonists may achieve this more conveniently. We have studied the effects of ranitidine, given either as 50-mg boluses every 6 h or as one of two infusion regimes (125 or 250 micrograms/kg.h), in controlling pH in critically ill patients on a ventilator. The percentage of samples with a pH less than 4 fell ...
