Carboxy group‐terminated synthetic polymers—branched poly‐(ethylene glycol), poly(acryloylmorpholine), and poly(vinylpyrrolidone)—were made amphiphilic by derivatization with phosphatidyl ethanolamine via the terminal carboxy group and then incorporated into lecithincholesterol liposomes prepared by the detergent dialysis method. Following the biodistribution of liposomes in mice, all three polymers were shown to be effective steric protectors for liposomes and were able to sharply increase liposome ...

To date, few studies have examined the personality characteristics and clinical predictors of impulsive behaviors in eating disorders (ED). The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of a wide range of impulsive behaviors in a sample of 554 ED subjects and to examine the predictors of these behaviors. Subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria as having anorexia nervosa restricting type (ANR; n = 183), anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (ANBP; n = 65), bulimia nervosa purging type ( ...

The aim of the present study was to longitudinally assess the impact of partial hospitalization on clinical and cognitive functioning in anorexia nervosa. Materials and Methods: 56 women with anorexia nervosa according to DSM-5 criteria and 58 healthy women were enrolled in the study. At baseline, ...

Background We previously found that dual HER2 blockade with trastuzumab and lapatinib led to inhibition of tumour growth in patient-derived xenografts of HER2-amplified metastatic colorectal cancer. In this study, we aimed to assess the antitumour activity of trastuzumab and lapatinib in patients with HER2-positive colorectal cancer. Methods HERACLES was a proof-of-concept, multicentre, open-label, phase 2 trial done at four Italian academic cancer centres. We enrolled adult patients with KRAS exon ...

PET studies allow in vivo imaging of the density of brain receptor species. The PET signal, however, is the sum of the fraction of radioligand that is specifically bound to the target receptor and the non-displaceable fraction (i.e. the non-specifically bound radioligand plus the free ligand in tissue). Therefore, measuring the non-displaceable fraction, which is generally assumed to be constant across the brain, is a necessary step to obtain regional estimates of the specific fractions. The nondisplaceable ...

Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) has been used to correlate the detailed structural and electrical characteristics of graphene derived from graphene oxide. Uniform large currents were measured over areas exceeding tens of micrometers in few-layer films, supporting the use of graphene as a transparent electrode material. Moreover, defects such as electrical discontinuities were easily detected. Multilayer films were found to have a higher conductivity per layer than single layers. It is ...

High-resolution photoemission spectroscopy and realistic ab-initio calculations have been employed to analyze the onset and progression of d-sp hybridization in Fe impurities deposited on alkali metal films. The interplay between delocalization, mediated by the free-electron environment, and Coulomb interaction among d-electrons gives rise to complex electronic configurations. The multiplet structure of a single Fe atom evolves and gradually dissolves into a quasiparticle peak near the Fermi level ...

Without a doubt PEG–SOD has been the enzyme most studied in PEGylation. One can say that it represents the preferred model to assess chemistries for PEG activation, analytical procedures suitable for conjugate characterization, the influence of PEG size in conjugate removal from circulation and elimination of immunogenicity and antigenicity, and the effect of route of administration. The effect of PEG conjugation was studied in vitro and in vivo models in comparison with the free enzyme and the ...

Linear and branched poly(ethylene glycol)s, with similar molecular weights, were conjugated with uricase and asparaginase, and an investigation of enzymological, immunological, and pharmacokinetic properties of the conjugates was carried out. It was found that the steric hindrance of the branched polymer has a relevant role in determining the biological properties of the conjugates. Conjugations with branched polymers inactivate the enzyme less than the linear ones. Compared to the native and the ...

The surface modification of enzymes by polymers has recently been proposed in order to improve their use in therapy. It is found that the derivatization with monomethoxypoly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme now used in inflammatory diseases, gives a heterogenous product. It is demonstrated that this heterogeneity depends on the presence of bifunctional PEG coming from non-methoxylated molecules. Covalent binding of PEG is accompanied by some loss in enzymatic activity, ...

The paper reports an investigation on ΔpH‐driven Ca 2+ fluxes in rotenone‐treated rat liver mitochondria. The H + concentration gradient (acidic inside) required to drive Ca 2+ influx is obtained from the K + concentration gradient through a H + /K + exchange. The rate of H + /K + exchange is very low in native mitochondria and is markedly enhanced by the electroneutral ionophore nigericin. The rate of Ca 2+ influx depends on the rate of generation of ΔpH; it is negligible in native mitochondria and fast after ...

Weak bases, such as the acridine and the aminophenazine dyes, which undergo protonation in the chromophoric group, are actively bound in sonicated fragments. On the other hand strong bases such as the divalent cations, the safranine and the cyanine dyes, which carry a permanent charge, are actively bound in intact mitochondria. In the latter case the process results in stimulation of the respiration, H + ejection, and a large change in absorbance, which is attributed to a stacking of the dyes. The ...
