The use of technology by different types of devices generates a large flow of confidential and personal information.Referencing this situation, it is necessary to use computer security tools, such as Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS).This work presents an IDS that can perform the flow-based analysis (netflow). The first step of this research conducted an analysis on flows previously collected and properly detected three different types of attacks. In the second step, the flows were organized to be used ...

Epilepsy is a class of chronic neurological disorders characterized by transient and unexpected electrical disturbances of the brain. The automated analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal can be instrumental for the proper diagnosis of this mental condition. This work presents a systematic assessment of the performance of different variants of the binary magnetic optimization algorithm (BMOA), two of which are introduced here, while serving as feature selectors for epileptic EEG signal identification. ...

Epilepsy refers to a set of chronic neurological syndromes characterized by transient and unexpected electrical disturbances of the brain. The detailed analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most influential steps for the proper diagnosis of this disorder. This work presents a systematic performance evaluation of the recently introduced optimum path forest (OPF) classifier when coping with the task of epilepsy diagnosis directly through EEG signal analysis. For this purpose, we have ...

Fluctuations of environmental factors in intertidal habitats can disrupt the trophic balance of mixotrophic cnidarians. We investigated the effect of tidal environments (subtidal, tidal pools and emerged areas) on fatty acid (FA) content of Zoanthus sociatus and Siderastrea stellata. Effect on photophysiology was also accessed as an autotrophy proxy. There was a general tendency of a lower percentage of zooplankton-associated FAs in colonies from emerged areas or tidal pools when compared with colonies ...

Intertidal environments are boundaries between marine and terrestrial ecosystems that are subject to rapid fluctuations across tidal cycles. This study investigates, for the first time, the photobiology of symbiotic zoanthids inhabiting different tidal environments: subtidal, intertidal pools and intertidal areas exposed to air during low tide. More specifically, we assessed the photochemical efficiency, Symbiodinium density and photosynthetic pigments profile of Zoanthus sociatus during low tide. ...

We introduce IFTrace, a method for video segmentation of deformable objects. The algorithm makes minimal assumptions about the nature of the tracked object: basically, that it consists of a few connected regions, and has a well-defined border. The objects to be tracked are interactively segmented in the first frame of the video, and a set of markers is then automatically selected in the interior and immediate surroundings of the object. These markers are then located in the next frame by a combination ...

The dynamics of dengue virus (DENV) circulation depends on serotype, genotype and lineage replacement and turnover. In São José do Rio Preto, Brazil, we observed that the L6 lineage of DENV-1 (genotype V) remained the dominant circulating lineage even after the introduction of the L1 lineage. We investigated viral fitness and immunogenicity of the L1 and L6 lineages and which factors interfered with the dynamics of DENV epidemics. The results showed a more efficient replicative fitness of L1 over ...

We report on progress with Schottky diode and p-i-n diode GaAs detectors for minimum ionising particles. The radiation hardness and potential speed of simple diodes is shown to be more than competitive with silicon detector. A discussion is given of the present understanding of the charge transport mechanism in the detectors since it influences their charge collection efficiency. Early results from microstrip detectors are also described.

Detectors with a p-i-n structure based on Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) grown Semi-Insulating (SI) GaAs have been fabricated. The current-voltage (I–V) characteristics and their response to γ-rays have been studied. Measurements of the peak charge collection efficiency (cce) have been compared with a model assuming a uniform electric field. The comparison indicates that this field is not uniform. The peak cce at 500 V is found to be 52% and 82% in 400 μm and 200 μm thick detectors respectively. ...

Electroencephalogram signals (EEG) have provided biometric identification systems with great capabilities. Several studies have shown that EEG introduces unique and universal features besides specific strength against spoofing attacks. Essentially, EEG is a graphic recording of the brain's electrical activity calculated by sensors (electrodes) on the scalp at different spots, but their best locations are uncertain. In this paper, the EEG channel selection problem is formulated as a binary optimization ...

Recently, electroencephalogram (EEG) signal provides great potential for identification systems. Many studies have shown that the EEG introduces unique, universal features and natural robustness for spoofing attacks. The EEG represents a graphic recording of the electrical activity of the brain that can be measured by placing sensors (electrodes) at different locations on the scalp. This chapter proposes a new technique using unsupervised clustering and optimization techniques for user identification- ...

Progress in the development of detectors based on semi‐insulating GaAs for experiments at future hadron colliders is presented. Effects of neutron and gamma irradiation at the levels of 1014 ncm−2 and 20 MRad respectively, have been shown to be small. Testbeam studies have shown that microstrip detectors can detect minimum ionizing particles with a good signal to noise ratio despite having low charge collection efficiencies. The problem of charge loss in the detectors is now better understood and ...
