A theoretical and numerical study of two-dimensional nonlinear flexural-gravity waves propagating at the surface of an ideal fluid of finite depth, covered by a thin ice sheet, is presented. The ice-sheet model is based on the special Cosserat theory of hyperelastic shells satisfying Kirchhoff׳s hypothesis, which yields a conservative and nonlinear expression for the bending force. From a Hamiltonian reformulation of the governing equations, two weakly nonlinear wave models are derived: a 5th-order ...

The steady response of an infinite unbroken floating ice sheet to a moving load is considered. It is assumed that the ice sheet is supported below by water of finite uniform depth. For a concentrated line load, earlier studies based on the linearization of the problem have shown that there are two ‘critical’ load speeds near which the steady deflection is unbounded. These two speeds are the speed c 0 of gravity waves on shallow water and the minimum phase speed c min . Since deflections cannot become ...

The annual cycle of the brown bear (Ursus arctos) in the Carpathian Mountains (Romania) consists of an active period from April to November, and an inactive period (hibernation) of approximately 4–5 months between November and March. During hibernation, the brown bears sleep continually and do not feed or drink water. Analyses of liver and kidney of male brown bears showed that liver iron content was 3 times higher in bears at the end of hibernation than at the end of the active period. A possible ...

Boundary integral equation methods for computing two- and three-dimensional nonlinear free surface flows are presented. In two dimensions, integral formulations can be derived by using complex variables or Green's functions. Both formulations are shown to yield the same level of accuracy. The formulation based on Green's functions is extended to three dimensions by following Forbes [J. Comput. Phys. 82 (1989) 330–347] and accurate numerical results are presented for moving distributions of pressure ...

Europeanisation scholars increasingly debate when and in what ways the European Union influences domestic politics. This article adopts a 'bottom-up' design and the process-tracing method to examine the influence of the EU enlargement context over the political power of the new social movements in Romania between 2000 and 2004 when the EU acquis was being negotiated. It finds that domestic civil society empowerment resulted from the nexus of three interacting causal pathways: the Executive's desire ...

The literature on Europeanisation in relation to Eastern Europe has posited the material incentives of EU membership as the main driver of domestic reforms aimed at adopting EU rules and norms (conditionality). But this fails to explain puzzling instances where no EU rule exists yet domestic change happens under European influence, or where the rule is a condition yet has little impact. As repositories of (dis)information, transnational networks can embolden a candidate country to breach the rules ...

The linear two-dimensional problem of hydroelastic waves reflected by a vertical wall is analysed. The fluid is of finite depth and is covered by an ice sheet. The fluid is assumed incompressible and inviscid. The ice sheet is assumed thin compared with both the water depth and wavelength of the incident wave. The deflection of the ice sheet is described by linear elastic plate theory, and the fluid flow by using the potential-flow model. The ice sheet extends infinitely and is clamped to the vertical- ...

Steady three-dimensional capillary-gravity waves generated by a moving pressure distribution are considered. Solutions of the full Euler equations are computed by using a boundary integral equation method. The radiation condition is imposed by introducing a small Rayleigh viscosity in the dynamic boundary condition. The results generalize previous linear findings.

A configuration consisting of two superposed fluids bounded above by a free surface is considered. Steady three-dimensional potential solutions generated by a moving pressure distribution are computed. The pressure can be applied either on the interface or on the free surface. Solutions of the fully nonlinear equations are calculated by boundary-integral equation methods. The results generalize previous linear and weakly nonlinear results. Fully localized gravity–capillary interfacial solitary waves ...

A linear three-dimensional problem of hydroelastic wave diffraction by a bottom-mounted circular cylinder is analysed. The fluid is of finite depth and is covered by an ice sheet, which is clamped to the cylinder surface. The ice stretches from the cylinder to infinity in all lateral directions. The hydroelastic behaviour of the ice sheet is described by linear elastic plate theory, and the fluid flow by a potential flow model. The two-dimensional incident wave is regular and has small amplitude. ...

Solutions of the nonlinear water wave equations under an ice sheet are computed using a boundary integral equation method. The ice sheet is modelled as a thin elastic plate and the fluid equations are nonlinear. Depending on the velocity of the moving disturbance generating the flow, different types of responses of the floating ice sheet are discussed.

Hydroelasticity brings together hydrodynamics and elastic theories. It is concerned with deformations of elastic bodies responding to hydrodynamic excitations, which themselves depend on elastic deformation. This Theme Issue is intended to identify and to outline mathematical problems of modern hydroelasticity and to review recent developments in this area, including physically and mathematically elaborated models and the techniques used in their analysis.

Abstract Nonlinear travelling waves on a two-dimensional inviscid fluid sheet are investigated when the sheet is bounded above and below by two thin elastic plates. Symmetric and antisymmetric solution branches are identified, together with a pair of bifurcation branches. It is shown that far along the branches the solutions approach limiting configurations that correspond to static solutions valid in the absence of fluid forcing.

A liquid jet follows a curved trajectory when the orifice from which the jet emerges is rotating. Surface-tension-driven instabilities cause the jet to lose coherence and break to form droplets. The sizes of the drops formed from such jets are in general not uniform, ranging from drops with diameters of the order of the jet diameter to droplets with diameters which are several orders of magnitude smaller. This presentation details a theoretical investigation of the effects of changing operating ...

One-dimensional equations are derived using asymptotic methods and solved numerically. Some results are presented for this nonlinear theory which is rather different from previous linear theories, showing the influence of surface tension and rotation on the breakup of the jets into droplets. Comparison with the experimental results shows ...

A Hamiltonian formulation for this hydroelastic problem is proposed in terms of quantities evaluated at the fluid–ice interface. ...

Great efforts at judicial reform have been made in Central-Eastern European countries (CEE) over the last 20 years. The earliest reforms were driven by the domestic need for foreign investment and the security of contracts and private property rights which investors expect. These domestic motivations were later complemented by those of international organizations, which throughout the 1990s lent money and granted funding to CEE countries on condition that they establish inter alia the rule of law. ...

Apilot-scale study of the dynamics of break-up of curved jets is presented. The jets emanate from an orifice near the base of a cylindrical drum of 0.285 m diameter. Images were captured of the jet trajectory and break-up and of the drops formed using a high speed camera. The effect of liquid dynamic viscosity (0.001–0.081 Pa s), rotation rate (30–300 rpm) and orifice size (radius 0.0005 and 0.0015 m) upon the jet break-up and drop size distributions produced were examined.
