Peter Truran,

Science is under attack from those who believe that truth is relative and from those who reject the critical standards of science in favor of comforting pseudoscientific beliefs. Be prepared to defend science by understanding the philosophy of science so that you can marshal your arguments against pseudoscience.

Alexander Stein,

The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompt a consideration of the role of music in mourning and trauma. The intrapsychic functions of music in the mourning process are explored, as is music as a unique response to trauma and as a special aesthetic expression of a range of affects connected with grief. Also explored is the allied notion of consolation, a topic underdeveloped in the analytic literature.

Ray Perkins,

Many traditional attacks on theism, at least most of those that appeal to the existence of evil, rest their case on the alleged logical incompatibility between the existence of and the existence of God as an omnipotent, omniscient, omni-benevolent deity.1 The existence of such a being, it is claimed, logically excludes the existence of evil. But since is an undeniable fact, the nonexistence of God, so it is argued, must be equally undeniable. Some of the central tenets of this from have been challenged ...

Introduction Visual stimuli of various types have long been known to precipitate epileptic attacks. The best known of these stimuli are those consisting of a flickering light, such as the potter's wheel, 1 the rotating blades of a helicopter, 2 or the shafts of light which strike a driver along a tree-lined road. 3 Less frequent as precipitants are the sudden access of bright light (as when a patient suddenly looks upon bright snow), 4 or more complexly patterned stimuli, such as those described by Bickford ...

J Kugler, M. Laub,

Using the biometeorologic system proposed by Brezowsky, the chronological distribution of migraine attacks was analysed in 4 patients over a 5-year period. A correlation of complaints with physical indices (atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and ionisation) could not be established. However, a significantly high incidence of headache symptoms was shown in the biometeorologic phase 6Z (although other investigators have reported such an increase in weather phases 3 and 4). The important common ...

M Mikulecký, Jozef Rovenský,

The aim was to search for periodical fluctuations in daily occurrence of gout attacks during the synodic lunar cycle. 126 gout attacks were recorded between 1972 and 1994 at known calendar dates. The synodic plexogram, displaying the number of attacks for each day of the cycle, was processed by cosinor regression. A pronounced cycling was found, with highest peaks under the new and full moon (syzygigies). Thus, the maximal occurrence of attacks coincides with the peaking lunisolar tidal effect. Similar ...

Ronald Ley,

This paper offers a theoretical explanation of panic attacks and agoraphobia. The theory is based in part on the observation that dyspnea and heart palpitations, the chief somatic complaints reported by agoraphobes with a history of panic attacks, are the cause of the panic fear suffered by the agoraphobes, not the effect. This study focuses on a set of dreams related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and their aftermath, using content analysis and cognitive psychology to explore the interweaving of external public catastrophe and internal psychological processes. The study tests several recent claims in contemporary dream research, including the central image theory of Hartmann [Hartmann, E., & Basile, R. (2003). Dream imagery becomes more intense after 9/11/01. Dreaming, 13(2), 61-66; Hartmann, E., & Brezler, ...

Abstract Through the analyses of responses to attacks to September 11, the authors interpret trauma as a catalyst of transformation of cultural consciousness and American self, and articulate the foundations for a transpersonal theory of cultural evolution. Accounts feature positive values, humanistic and spiritual aspirations, direct intuition of the evolution of consciousness, and the instances of new type of integral consciousness identified with both oneness and multiplicity. Authors use the ...

Meterological factors influence several biological functions. Geomagnetic activity (GMA) can be considered a trigger factor of migraine attacks. We studied the possible relationship between 40 migraine patients and some meteorological factors: humidity, temperature and geomagnetic activity in particular. All frequency changes of geomagnetic activity, temperature and humidity values are recorded daily. The study was performed from March to June 1988 over a geographically small area in order to avoid ...
