The use of two natural sorbents, kapok and cattail fibers, were investigated for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal from water. Naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and fluoranthene were the PAHs studied. For comparative purposes, a commercial polyester fiber sorbent was included in the investigation. The PAH sorption and retention capabilities of the three fibers were determined through batch and continuous‐flow experiments under noncompetitive ...

The boundary value method for design of distillation columns separating ternary heterogeneous azeotropic mixtures is extended to include complex configurations, i.e. columns with integrated decanters and with multiple heterogeneous stages; double-feed columns; columns with intermediate decanters. The methods can be used for establishing product feasibility in a column and evaluating a column design in terms of cost. Multiple feasible designs can be generated for a given set of product specifications, ...

Global warming, energy security, and the rising costs of oil have added a greater driving force to the development of feasible alternatives to petroleum-based transportation fuels. In parallel, wastes and wastewater generated from various industries should be avoided or converted to energy more in the future in order to reduce environmental problems and provide additional sources of energy. In this aspect, biogas plant is an effective option where gas is produced biologically by the fermentation ...

Cassava starch were liquefied and saccharified by alpha-amylase and gluco-amylase, respectively, before fermentation for bioethanol production. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the condition of liquefaction and saccharification on sugar concentrations. The effects of amount of enzyme, liquefaction temperature and liquefaction time on dextrin concentrations and the effects of amount of enzyme, saccharification temperature and saccharification time on glucose concentrations were ...

This study presents a comprehensive exploration of enhancing the electrical output of flexible hybrid piezoelectric-triboelectric nanogenerators (P-TENG) through the incorporation of γ-glycine (γ-GC) into fully organic γ-GC/chitosan (CS) composites. A systematic investigation of the effects of γ-GC content (wt%) on the material characteristics and resulting electrical output signal is conducted. The research demonstrates the pivotal role of optimized γ-GC and CS concentrations in achieving superior ...

In 1961, while on a visit to Cambodia, I first came to know of this work from the chief Abbot of Vat Unālom of Phnom Penh. I was informed by the learned Abbot of the existence of a ‘Mahāyānist’ work known as Dibbamanta. The work was not available there but subsequently a palm-leaf MS of this work was found in the National Museum of Bangkok, a microfilm copy of which was made available to me through the courtesy of the curator of that Museum. The MS consists of 48 folios 1 , written in Cambodian characters. ...

The shadowplay of Southeast Asia has often been understood as a reflection of local cultural patterns, and it has therefore been the object of much scholarly interest. That interest has been directed especially at the Javanese play, although much has also been written about Balinese and Malaysian shadowplay performances. The shadowplay performance is not usually associated with Thailand, and the shadowplay there has not been subjected to the same degree of scrutiny as in Indonesia and Malaysia. ...

Utilization of sugarcane bagasses for butanol, ethanol and acetone production was studied by acid hydrolysis and bacterial fermentation. Glucose, xylose and arabinose contents of sugarcane bagasse hydrolyzed in 5% (v/v) sulfuric acid solution were investigated in respective range of 5 to 60 min. Results showed glucose and xylose released during hydrolysis at 121 C and long treatment time of 60 minutes had high concentrations of 18.7 and 19.8 g/l, respectively. The sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate was ...
