Recent animal studies showed T cells have a direct pathogenic role in the development of heart failure (HF). However, which subsets of T cells contribute to human HF pathogenesis and progression remains unclear. We characterized immunologic properties of various subsets of T cells and their clinical implications in human HF. Thirty-eight consecutive patients with newly diagnosed acute HF (21 males, mean age 66 ± 16 years) and 38 healthy control subjects (21 males, mean age 62 ± 12 years) were enrolled. ...

In Brief Background This study aimed to evaluate risk factors and postoperative clinical outcome associated with myocardial injury detected by an elevated high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) immediately after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Methods Between January 2011 and December 2016, 313 adult recipients undergoing LDLT, with normal preoperative hs-cTnI were selected. Hs-cTnI level above 0.04 ng/mL according to 99th percentile reference limit was defined as myocardial injury. ...

Lactarius and Lactifluus are milkcaps that are characterized by the secretion of latex. These two genera are part of a globally distributed cosmopolitan group of ectomycorrhizal fungi that is an important food resource in various ecosystems. Recently, the taxonomy of Lactarius and Lactifluus has been revised based on molecular phylogenetics. Despite the importance of these taxa, Korean species of both genera are poorly understood. In an effort to describe milkcap species that are indigenous to Korea, ...

Improving interfacial interactions by constructing heterostructures is gaining interest due to its unique structural benefits for ion-reservoir applications. However, great challenges remain. Herein, we propose MoS2 nanorod-based heterostructures covered with a closely interconnected Sn and Mo sulfides/carbon matrix ([email protected]) (engraved by a simple water based surface exfoliation strategy) as an efficient anode material for Li/Na–ion storage. Our hierarchical [email protected] electrode achieved ...

Background Cardiovascular disease is an important cause of mortality among survivors of breast cancer (BC). We developed a prediction model for major adverse cardiovascular events after BC therapy, which is based on conventional and BC treatment‐related cardiovascular risk factors. Methods and Results The cohort of the study consisted of 1256 Asian female patients with BC from 4 medical centers in Korea and was randomized in a 1:1 ratio into the derivation and validation cohorts. The outcome measures ...

Species of Arthrinium are well-known plant pathogens, endophytes, or saprobes found in various terrestrial habitats. Although several species have been isolated from marine environments and their remarkable biological activities have been reported, marine Arthrinium species remain poorly understood. In this study, the diversity of this group was evaluated based on material from Korea, using morphological characterization and molecular analyses with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, β- ...

Microbial metabolites have been recognized as an important source for the discovery of new antifungal agents because of their diverse chemical structures with novel modes of action. In the course of our screening for new antifungal agents from microbes, we found that culture filtrates of two fungal species Aspergillus candidus SFC20200425-M11 and Aspergillus montenegroi SFC20200425-M27 have the potentials to reduce the development of fungal plant diseases such as tomato late blight and wheat leaf ...

Microorganisms are regarded as a sustainable source of biologically active molecules. Among them, Trichoderma spp. have been an attractive source of biological compounds. However, the study of marine-derived Trichoderma has developed slowly because of the difficulty in isolating the fungi. In our study, 30 strains of marine-derived Trichoderma were identified through the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1α) sequences, and their biological activities, such as antioxidant activity by ABTS and ...

Structural pulverization of metal chalcogenides such as Sn-based compounds is a serious issue for development of high-performance anode materials and results in serious capacity fading during continuous charge and discharge cycles. In this work, we synthesize ultrasmall SnS quantum dots (QDs) anchored onto nitrogen-enriched carbon (NC) nanospheres through facile hydrothermal and carbonization processes to prepare a progressive anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The optimized SnS QDs@NC electrode ...

Hydrous forms of cobalt molybdate binary metal oxide nanoaggregates were synthesized via a simple chemical co-precipitation technique. The subsequent heat treatment at 400 °C converted the sample into anhydrous cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) with mesoporous nanostructure. The anhydrous cobalt molybdate possess surface area and pore volume of 63.92 m2g-1 and 0.1802 cm3g-1 which is much higher than the hydrous cobalt molybdate (1.215 m2g-1 and 0.0072 cm3 g−1). Conversion-based transition metal sulfide compounds have been considered as a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The major obstacle of these conversion-type anode materials is a large volume change in the course of sodium-ion conversion, which deteriorates their structural stability. Herein, we report a rational combination of pyrrhotite Fe1–xS with alabandite MnS as an anode material with the subsided structural degradation and improved storage ability for SIB.
