This study examined the effects of Ca and Sr addition on the creep and corrosion properties of Mg–Al–Sn based alloys with the aim of developing new Mg–Al–Sn–x alloys for automotive powertrain applications. The materials were cast using the squeeze casting process to obtain a dense microstructure without pores. Creep tests were carried out at a constant temperature between 150 °C and 200 °C and a constant applied stress between 50 and 80 MPa until the minimum creep rate had been reached. Potentiodynamic ...

The microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg–4Al–2Sn–1Ca alloy with Ce addition have been investigated for the purpose of the development of heat resistant magnesium alloys for automotive powertrain application. The main phases of as-cast Mg–4Al–2Sn–1Ca alloy were Mg17Al12, Mg2Sn and CaMgSn phases, and Al11Ce3 phase were found in the alloys with Ce addition. And, Mg17Al12 phases were decreased with addition of Ce. The addition of Ce improved the mechanical properties of Mg–4Al–2Sn–1Ca alloy. ...

The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known, but the effects of Ag nanoparticles on microorganisms and antimicrobial mechanism have not been revealed clearly. Stable Ag nanoparticles were prepared and their shape and size distribution characterized by particle characterizer and transmission electron microscopic study. The antimicrobial activity of Ag nanoparticles was investigated against yeast, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. In these tests, Muller Hinton agar ...

And, CNTs reinforced AZ91 metal matrix composites (MMC) were fabricated by the squeeze infiltrated method. The results obtained pave the way for the formation of coated carbon nanotubes for the development of composites with a homogenous microstructure and improved performance. The Si coated MWNTs leads to improvement in the wettability, distribution, ...

The effects of Yb addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-5Al alloy are investigated. The results indicate that the addition of Yb to the Mg-5Al alloy facilitates the formation of a thermally stable Al2Yb phase, the refinement of the microstructure and the suppression of the volume fraction of Mg17Al12 phase in Mg-5Al alloy. Yb addition has little effect on the mechanical properties of the experimental alloys tested at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, however, the ...

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is recognized as a significant food-borne pathogen, so rapid identification is important for food hygiene management and prompt epidemiological investigations. The limited prevalence data on Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and E. coli O157:H7 in foods and animals in Korea made an assessment of the risks difficult, and the options for management and control unclear. The prevalence of the organisms was examined by newly developed kit-E. coli O157:H7 Rapid kit. For the ...

Salmonella enterica serotype gallinarum biotype gallinarum and biotype pullorum are non-motile and pathogenic avian strains. Biotype gallinarum causes fowl typhoid and biotype pullorum is the cause of pullorum disease in chickens. The two biotypes could be differentiated based on biochemical characteristics. However, conventional culture and biochemical assays are time-consuming, laborious and need sterile laboratory practices. Although the two biotypes, gallinarum and pullorum are non-motile, they ...

Limited information is available regarding horse-associated antimicrobial resistant (AR) Escherichia (E.) coli. This study was designed to evaluate the frequency and characterize the pattern of AR E. coli from healthy horse-associated samples. A total of 143 E. coli (4.6%) were isolated from 3,078 samples collected from three national racetracks and 14 private horse-riding courses in Korea. Thirty of the E. coli isolates (21%) showed antimicrobial resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent, and ...

Superantigens (SAgs) produced by Staphylococcus aureus at high concentrations induce proliferation of T cells bearing specific TCR Vβ sequences and massive cytokinemia that cause toxic shock syndrome. However, the biological relevance of SAgs produced at very low concentrations during asymptomatic colonization or chronic infections is not understood. In this study, we demonstrate that suboptimal stimulation of human PBMCs with a low concentration (1 ng/ml) of staphylococcal enterotoxin C1, at which ...

Although the inner ear vasculature and spiral ligament fibrocytes in the lateral wall consist of a significant proportion of cells in the cochlea, relatively little is known regarding their functional significance. In this study, 6-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to noise trauma to induce transient hearing threshold shift (TTS) or permanent hearing threshold shift ( ...

While clinical evidence has shown the effectiveness of DEX for treatment of various inner ear diseases, its mechanisms of action and the optimal timing of treatment are not well understood. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is an irreversible, progressive neurodegenerative disorder and is presently untreatable. Previous studies using animal models have suggested mitochondrial damage and programmed cell death to be involved with ARHL. Thus, we further investigated the pathophysiologic role of mitochondria and necroptosis in aged C57BL/6J male mice. Aged mice (20 months old) exhibited a significant loss of hearing, number of hair cells, neuronal fibers, and synaptic ribbons compared to young ...

Developing high performance, highly stable, and low-cost electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challenging in water electrolysis technology. However, Ir- and Ru-based OER catalysts with high OER efficiency are difficult to commercialize as precious metal-based catalysts. Adipose tissue–derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs), which can differentiate into several lineages, have immunomodulatory properties similar to those of bone marrow–derived MSCs. However, the specific mechanism by which the immunomodulatory effect of MSCs occurs is not clear. In this study, we isolated canine AD-MSCs (cAD-MSCs) and induced their development into adipocyte, osteocyte, and neuron-like cells. We then investigated their phenotype and cytokine expression to determine whether they were ...

DAP-resistance (DAP-R) in S. aureus has been mainly observed in MRSA strains, and has been linked to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the mprF gene leading to altered cell membrane (CM) phospholipid (PL) profiles, enhanced positive surface charge, and changes in CM fluidity.
