Fmoc-protected trans-4-methylproline was synthesized starting from d-serine. The chiral scaffold of serine in the form of olefinated Garner's aldehyde 3 was used to control the diastereoselective formation of the new stereocenter on the hydrogenation of allylic alcohol 4. The diastereoselectivity (syn/anti ratio) of the process was 86:14, attained with Raney nickel. Hydrogen migration seems not to be the sole factor lowering the diastereoselectivity, as nickel is known not to promote double-bond ...

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multi-factorial disease that is the leading cause of irreversible and severe vision loss in the developed countries. It has been suggested that the pathogenesis of dry AMD involves impaired protein degradation in retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE). RPE cells are constantly exposed to oxidative stress that may lead to the accumulation of damaged cellular proteins, DNA and lipids and evoke tissue deterioration during the aging process. The ubiquitin-proteasome ...

Effects of oxygen availability on blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) and arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal changes upon motor activation were studied. Mild hypoxic hypoxia was induced by reducing the inspired oxygen content (FIO2) to 12%, decreasing blood oxygen saturation (Y) from 0.99 ± 0.01 to 0.85 ± 0.03. The fMRI signal characteristics were determined during finger tapping. BOLD activation volume decreased as a function of declining Y in ...

Predicting tissue outcome remains a challenge for stroke magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, we have acquired multiparametric MRI data sets (including absolute T(1), T(2), diffusion, T(1rho) using continuous wave and adiabatic pulse approaches, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and amide proton transfer ratio (APTR) images) during and after 65 mins of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) in rats. The MRI scans were repeated 24 h after MCAo, when the animals were killed for quantitative histology. ...

We analyse the determinants of social assistance receipt among young adults in three Nordic countries, focusing on social-background and life-course events during early adulthood. We ask whether they are related differently to short-term and long-term receipt. Short-term poverty could be more individualized than long-term poverty which can be expected to be more strongly related to social background. We applied generalized ordinal logit modelling to longitudinal register-based data. Both social- ...

Time of ischemia onset is the most critical factor for patient selection for available drug treatment strategies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the abilities of the absolute longitudinal rotating frame (T(1ρ)) and transverse (T(2)) MR relaxation times to estimate the onset time of ischemia in rats.Permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats was used to induce focal cerebral ischemia and animals were imaged with multiparametric MRI at several time points up to 7 hours postischemia. ...

Characteristics of the blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal poststimulus undershoot in the visual cortex were studied at varying levels of arterial blood oxygen saturation (Ysat). Undershoot with an amplitude of −0.6±0.2% appeared after positive BOLD response (+1.7±0.5%) under control conditions. Cerebral blood volume (CBV), as determined with vascular-space-occupancy-dependent fMRI, increased by 26–43% during the positive BOLD peak, but the CBV proceeded ...

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been recently used to quantify cerebral blood volume (CBV) and oxygen extraction ratio (OER). In the present study, we have exploited the intravascular BOLD model to assess gray matter (GM) OER at hemispheric level using parenchymal T2 and CBV data at 1.5 T, obtained by single spin echo and dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion MRI, respectively. An OER of 0.40 ± 0.07 was determined in gray matter for control subjects. ...

We show that optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) can be observed from individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and, furthermore, allows imaging of individual tubes. Detailed analysis of our results suggests that the structural noncentrosymmetry, as required for SHG, arises from the non-zero chiral angle of the SWCNT. SHG thus has potential as a fast, non-destructive, and simple method for imaging of individual nanomolecules and for probing their chiral properties. Even more, it opens ...

The diameter and semiconducting character of the tubes were additionally confirmed by resonance Raman measurements. The FWM signal showed electronic response from the SWCNTs.
