The spectral transmittance of a new generation of SiN based X-ray windows is characterized. The windows are strengthened by low aspect-ratio support grid. As expected for this unprecedented thin window material, the transmittance in the soft X-ray spectral region outperforms the present technologies. A detailed study of the various performance properties of the fabricated SiN X-ray windows is presented. Besides their high transmittance, the windows also have high uniformity, high mechanical strength ...

We have demonstrated the fabrication of ultra-thin Si fine grid supported silicon nitride X-ray windows. These X-ray windows exhibit unequaled transmission of soft X-rays, high strength and excellent thermal stability. Measured soft X-ray transmission performance is significantly enhanced compared to typical polymer or beryllium based X-ray window structures. A double sided grid structure is used to demonstrate the scaling of the technology to larger areas.

The gene for mouse relaxin-like factor (RLF), a member of the insulin/IGF/relaxin family of hormones, appears to be predominantly expressed in testicular Leydig cells. Mice deficient in RLF have revealed a role for this peptide in testicular descent, but the regulatory mechanisms of its function are still insufficiently characterized. In the present study we showed that the RLF promoter was active in both mLTC-1 Leydig cells and luteinized KK-1 granulosa tumor cells. Interestingly, the activity of ...

Three alternative condensing mode power and combined heat and power (CHP) waste-to-energy concepts were compared in terms of their impacts on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from a heat and power generation system. The concepts included (i) grate, (ii) bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) and (iii) circulating fluidised bed (CFB) combustion of waste. The BFB and CFB take advantage of advanced combustion technology which enabled them to reach electric efficiency up to 35% and 41% in condensing mode, respectively, ...

Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a non-invasive imaging modality that has been shown to be a feasible method to demonstrate myocardial inflammation. The aim of this study was to identify the patients suspected of having cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), who are most likely to benefit from PET imaging. 137 patients suspected of having CS underwent a dedicated cardiac FDG-PET examination at Tampere University Hospital between August 2012 and September 2015. Atmospheric nucleation is the dominant source of aerosol particles in the global atmosphere and an important player in aerosol climatic effects. The key steps of this process occur in the sub-2-nanometer (nm) size range, in which direct size-segregated observations have not been possible until very recently. Here, we present detailed observations of atmospheric nanoparticles and clusters down to 1-nm mobility diameter. We identified three separate size regimes below 2-nm diameter that build up a ...

Crystal quality of radiation detector-grade TlBr material was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and synchrotron X-ray topography methods. The analyzed TlBr crystals were further processed for electrical characterization and current–voltage characteristics were measured at a temperature range of 210–320 K. The crystals studied in this work were grown by the Bridgman–Stockbarger process. X-ray diffraction measurements show the presence of small-angle grain boundaries in the crystals. The crystal with ...

Abstract About half of present-day cloud condensation nuclei originate from atmospheric nucleation, frequently appearing as a burst of new particles near midday 1 . Atmospheric observations show that the growth rate of new particles often accelerates when the diameter of the particles is between one and ten nanometres 2,3 . In this critical size range, new particles are most likely to be lost by coagulation with pre-existing particles 4 , thereby failing to form new cloud condensation nuclei that are ...

Abstract. Sulphuric acid, ammonia, amines, and oxidised organics play a crucial role in nanoparticle formation in the atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the composition of nucleated nanoparticles formed from these compounds in the CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber experiments at CERN (Centre européen pour la recherche nucléaire). The investigation was carried out via analysis of the particle hygroscopicity, ethanol affinity, oxidation state, and ion composition. Hygroscopicity ...

Background— Long-term physical inactivity seems to cause many health problems. We studied whether persistent physical activity compared with inactivity has a global effect on serum metabolome toward reduced cardiometabolic disease risk. Methods and Results— Sixteen same-sex twin pairs (mean age, 60 years) were selected from a cohort of twin pairs on the basis of their >30-year discordance for physical activity. Persistently (≥5 years) active and inactive groups in 3 population-based cohorts (mean ages, ...

TlBr is a promising material for gamma-ray detectors; however, it has crystal quality problems originated from the crystal growth itself and further treatments during detector fabrication. The effect of technological improvements on crystal quality has been studied in this work. Low performance of studied detectors was shown to be associated with residual stress or/and small-angle grain boundaries in these crystals. Several crystals failed as detectors were proved to contain impurities.

Silver birch (Betula pendula) is a pioneer boreal tree that can be induced to flower within 1 year. Its rapid life cycle, small (440-Mb) genome, and advanced germplasm resources make birch an attractive model for forest biotechnology. We assembled and chromosomally anchored the nuclear genome of an inbred B. pendula individual. Gene duplicates from the paleohexaploid event were enriched for transcriptional regulation, whereas tandem duplicates were overrepresented by environmental responses. Population ...

In this paper we present a novel germanium/gallium arsenide heterostructure X-ray detector with the active volume of germanium. The heterostructure is fabricated by depositing a gallium arsenide layer on a high-purity germanium wafer in a vertical metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy system. This approach provides a new alternative to traditional lithium diffused n+ contact which is not easily applicable for finely pixelated detectors. The detector chip fabrication utilizing this kind of heterostructure ...

In the version of this article initially published, there was a mistake in the calculation of the nucleotide mutation rate per site per generation: 1 × 10−9 mutations per site per generation was used, whereas 9.5 × 10−9 was correct. This error affects the interpretation of population-size changes over time and their possible correspondence with known geological events, as shown in the original Fig. 4 and supporting discussion in the text, as well as details in the Supplementary Note.
