Abstract Background . We studied the effect of four different types of prosthetic aortic valves on time course and extent of regression of left ventricular hypertrophy after aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis. Methods . Four groups of 10 patients each were randomly assigned to receive: (1) aortic homograft preserved in antibiotic solution at 4°C, (2) Toronto stentless porcine valve, (3) Medtronic Freestyle stentless valve, or (4) Medtronic Intact aortic valve. The left ventricular mass index, effective ...

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) plays a crucial role in the management of gastroduodenal diseases by allowing a direct and accurate evaluation of the mucosa and the execution of several operative maneuvers. Despite a constant development of new imaging tools and operative devices, the widespread use of EGD has not resulted in a significant reduction of mortality for patients affected by esophageal/gastric cancer during the last three decades in Western countries.Evidence indicates that this disheartening ...

The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. The vast majority of TCs (> 90%) originate from follicular cells and are defined as differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC) and the two histological subtypes are the papillary TC with its variants and the follicular TC. Previous studies have demonstrated that different curcumin extracts are able to influence cell metabolic activity vitality in human papillary thyroid carcinoma TPC-1 cells. We continued the study using the most effective extract and adding other nutraceuticals such as piperine and vitamin E, in order to define the possible role of these in modulating the genetic expression of cell markers and to understand the effectiveness in modulating the regression of cancer phenotype. PURPOSE To investigate the prognostic relevance of cyclin D1 gene overexpression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas (LSCCs). PATIENTS AND METHODS The overexpression of cyclin D1 was analyzed in 149 LSCC patients with a median follow-up duration of 60 months using the DCS6 monoclonal antibody; only cases that overexpressed cyclin D1 in more than 5% of neoplastic cells were considered positive. RESULTS Forty-eight cases (32.2%) were immunoreactive to the DCS6 antibody. Cyclin D1 overexpression was ...

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a form of low-dose light therapy that acts through energy delivery from non-ionizing sources. During the recent two decades, there has been tremendous progress with PBM acceptance in medicine. However, PBM effects on potential stimulation of existing malignant or pre-malignant cells remain unknown. Thus, the primary endpoint was to assess the safety of PBM treatment parameters on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) proliferation or survival. The secondary endpoint ...

We consider the real-time evolution of the Hubbard model in the limit of infinite coupling. In this limit the Hamiltonian of the system is mapped into a number-conserving quadratic form of spinless fermions, i.e. the tight binding model. The relevant local observables, however, do not transform well under this mapping and take very complicated expressions in terms of the spinless fermions. Here we show that for two classes of interesting observables the quench dynamics from product states in the ...

Abstract The solution of the inverse kinematic problem is of the utmost importance in robotic manipulator control. This article proposes a closed‐loop scheme for solving the inverse kinematic problem for nonredundant and redundant wrists based on the computation of the Jacobian transpose. The manipulability measure is suitably introduced as a constraint for redundant wrists, by taking advantage of the null space of the Jacobian matrix. The resulting algorithm provides a computational tool to solve ...

Background The goal of our study was to molecularly dissect mesothelioma tumour pathways by mean of microarray technologies in order to identify new tumour biomarkers that could be used as early diagnostic markers and possibly as specific molecular therapeutic targets. Methodology We performed Affymetrix HGU133A plus 2.0 microarray analysis, containing probes for about 39,000 human transcripts, comparing 9 human pleural mesotheliomas with 4 normal pleural specimens. Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) are two neurodegenerative disorders within the category of tauopathies, which must be considered in differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. We reported a relevant activity of the combination between sorafenib and octreotide long-acting release (LAR) in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. In this work, we have studied if oxidative stress in both serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and pERK activation status in PBMC could be predictive of response. In the 20 responsive patients, the decrease of reactive oxygen species levels was already detectable after 10 days (T10) from the beginning of sorafenib administration, ...

The small GTPase p21 Ras and its downstream effectors play a central role in the control of cell survival and apoptosis. We studied the effects of Ras/ERK1/2 signaling inhibition on oxidative damage in cultured renal and endothelial cells and on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in the rat. Primary human renal tubular and human endothelial ECV304 cells underwent significant cell death when subjected to oxidative stress. A gas of interacting fermions confined in a quasi one-dimensional geometry shows a BEC to BCS crossover upon slowly driving its coupling constant through a confinement-induced resonance. On one side of the crossover the fermions form tightly bound bosonic molecules behaving as a repulsive Bose gas, while on the other they form Cooper pairs, whose size is much larger than the average interparticle distance. Here we consider the situation arising when the coupling constant is varied suddenly from ...

Abstract Emerging evidence indicates that chemical exposures in the environment are overlooked drivers of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Recent evidence suggests that micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) particles derived largely from the chemical or mechanical degradation of plastics might represent a novel CVD risk factor. Experimental data in preclinical models suggest that MNPs can foster oxidative stress, platelet aggregation, cell senescence, and inflammatory responses in endothelial and immune cells ...
