Cervical cancer is preventable if effective screening measures are in place. Pap-smear is the commonest technique used for early screening and diagnosis of cervical cancer. However, the manual analysis of the pap-smears is error prone due to human mistake, moreover, the process is tedious and time-consuming. Hence, it is beneficial to develop a computer-assisted diagnosis tool to make the pap-smear test more accurate and reliable. Current guidelines on the diagnosis and exclusion of malaria stipulate that if there is an initial negative result on blood film, multiple blood film preparations should be taken to sufficiently exclude malaria. We looked at a state-wide database of blood results retrospectively for a period of 14 years to identify subjects who had been tested for malaria. Most (93%) of patients were diagnosed on the first blood smear. Almost 7% of patients had an initial negative blood film result but subsequently ...

Cystic fibrosis(CF) is responsible for much of the chronic pulmonary disease seen in children. Progressive pulmonary insufficiency accompanied by respiratory tract infection is the cause of death in 90% of CF patients. Although gram-positive staphylococci were responsible for most of these pulmonary infections prior to 1960, gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonization is now the major cause of the progressive pulmonary disease responsible for the morbidity and mortality in CF patients. ...

A detailed clinical evaluation of the diff3 system for examining peripheral blood smears was performed over a six-month period in a service hematology laboratory in a large teaching hospital. The diff3 automatically classifies 11 categories of nucleated cells; qualitatively evaluates erythrocyte size, shape, and color; estimates platelet and leukocyte count; and generates a quantitative estimate of platelet number.
