Resting heart rate is associated with cardiovascular diseases and mortality in observational and Mendelian randomization studies. The aims of this study are to extend the number of resting heart rate associated genetic variants and to obtain further insights in resting heart rate biology and its clinical consequences. A genome-wide meta-analysis of 100 studies in up to 835,465 individuals reveals 493 independent genetic variants in 352 loci, including 68 genetic variants outside previously identified ...

Pathogenic variants of the myelin transcription factor-1 like (MYT1L) gene include heterozygous missense, truncating variants and 2p25.3 microdeletions and cause a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder (OMIM#616,521). Despite enrichment in de novo mutations in several developmental disorders and autism studies, the data on clinical characteristics and genotype-phenotype correlations are scarce, with only 22 patients with single nucleotide pathogenic variants reported. The interposition polytetrafluoroethylene graft conduit has found many uses in the armamentarium of the surgeon who performs vascular access for hemodialysis: when resection of aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm is required, or when an extension loop is required, either to simply lengthen the amount of graft or to circumvent an infected segment after resection.

Regulated glucose transport is necessary for controlled cellular proliferation. In this communication, we demonstrate that a growth factor, namely platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), regulates expression of the glucose transporter gene. PDGF induced a 1.7-fold increase in both the rate of glucose transport and the amount of membrane-associated glucose transporter protein in mouse fibroblasts 6 h after treatment. This was accompanied by a 5-fold increase in the accumulation of the HepG-2/rat brain ...

Summary: Children with medically resistant temporal lobe seizures that persist into adolescence often experience psychosocial deterioration and medical morbidity. It is therefore especially important to evaluate the contribution of surgical therapy in preadolescent children. We describe our experience with temporal lobectomy in 16 children <12 years (mean age 7 years) who had intractable seizures of temporal lobe origin. Structural lesions were identified on neuroimaging studies in 11 patients. In ...

ABSTRACT There is evidence from a variety of sources that employees often do not feel comfortable speaking to their bosses about organizational problems or issues that concern them. The purpose of this study was to shed light on the types of issues that employees are reluctant to raise, and identify why employees sometimes decide to remain silent rather than voice their concerns. We interviewed 40 employees and found that most had been in situations where they were concerned about an issue but did ...

The effect of chronic oral opioids on hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis in women, and on bone mineral density (BMD) in men and women is not known. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the effect of long-term oral opioids on gonadal status and BMD in male and female patients with chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP). We included 26 community-dwelling CNCP patients, 12 men and 14 premenopausal women, treated with oral opioids for at least one year. We obtained Visual Analogue Scale ...

Age-related changes in neural circuits, neural networks, and their plasticity are central to our understanding of age changes in cognition and brain structure and function. This paper summarizes selected findings on these topics presented at the Cognitive Aging Summit II. Specific areas discussed were synaptic vulnerability and plasticity, including the role of different types of synaptic spines, and hormonal effects in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of nonhuman primates, the impact of both ...

ABSTRACT The mobility of cell surface MHC molecules and their ability to form dynamic associations may be related to the physiological status of the cell and to the potential to bind effector T lymphocytes. To investigate these properties, we have prepared HLA DR specific monoclonal antibodies coupled in a 1:1 mole ratio to the fluorescent phycobiliprotein, R-phycoerythrin (PE). We show that these small particles can be sequentially imaged using a cooled slow-scan charge coupled device camera and ...

Several previous studies have suggested that hormonal contraception could be associated with increased risk of cervical infections. However, few high-quality prospective studies have examined this relationship. The goal of this study was to measure the effect of oral contraceptives (OC) and depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) on the acquisition of cervical chlamydial and gonococcal infections.Women attending 2 reproductive health centers in Baltimore, MD, were enrolled into a prospective cohort ...

Somali women have lower cervical cancer screening (CCS) rates than non-Somali women in the United States. We examined clinical and administrative data associated with CCS adherence among Somali women seen at a large primary care practice over 2 years. Fifty-one percent of 310 women were adherent to CCS, and adherence was associated with more overall health care system visits. Patients saw male providers 65.8% of the time; however, only 20.4% of the CCS tests were performed by male providers. Future ...
