Abstract Ten adolescent judokas performed circuit training consisting of six 40-s periods of judo exercises separated by 40 s (CT1:1), 120 s (CT1:3), or 200 s (CT1:5) of rest. Heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and the number of repetitions were recorded. Heart rate reached ~180 beats·min-1 at the end of work periods, with slightly lower values for CT1:5. Blood lactate concentration increased until the 6th and 5th work periods for CT1:1 and CT1:3, respectively, whereas the peak value was lower ...

Mining the antibody repertoire of plasma cells and plasmablasts could enable the discovery of useful antibodies for therapeutic or research purposes1. We present a method for high-throughput, single-cell screening of IgG-secreting primary cells to characterize antibody binding to soluble and membrane-bound antigens. CelliGO is a droplet microfluidics system that combines high-throughput screening for IgG activity, using fluorescence-based in-droplet single-cell bioassays2, with sequencing of paired ...

The CpU(BH4)3L2 compounds (L = THF, II; DME, III; HMPA, IV) but not that with L = Ph3PO, V) undergo ligand redistribution reactions to give Cp2U(BH4)2 and L2U(BH4)4. The dynamic behaviour in solution of compounds II–V has been studied by low temperature 1H NMR. The L ligands of II and V are respectively in trans and cis positions in an octahedral configuration, whereas complexes III and IV exist in solution as two equilibrating isomers. Dissociation of the THF ligands of II takes place; complexes III– ...

Point defects of opposite signs can alternately nucleate on the -1/2 disclination line that forms near the free surface of a confined nematic liquid crystal. We show the existence of metastable configurations consisting of periodic repetitions of such defects. These configurations are characterized by a minimal interdefect spacing that is seen to depend on sample thickness and on an applied electric field. The time evolution of the defect distribution suggests that the defects attract at small distances ...

Model-based clustering consists of fitting a mixture model to data and identifying each cluster with one of its components. Multivariate normal distributions are typically used. The number of clusters is usually determined from the data, often using BIC. In practice, however, individual clusters can be poorly fitted by Gaussian distributions, and in that case model-based clustering tends to represent one non-Gaussian cluster by a mixture of two or more Gaussian distributions. If the number of mixture ...

Death is never just the end of life. All the cultures, when faced with death, have to confront an ambiguous situation : the dead person, although already absent, is still present and funeral rituals are not just made to decently part with a corpse. Being dead most probably comes close to a state, but from a cultural point of view the issue is to define a status. If the funeral stages a passage, it is because the dead person has to find a place outside the world of the living. That differentiation ...

Model selection is a general paradigm which includes many statistical problems. One of the most fruitful and popular approaches to carry it out is the minimization of a penalized criterion. Birgé and Massart (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 138:33–73, 2006) have proposed a promising data-driven method to calibrate such criteria whose penalties are known up to a multiplicative factor: the “slope heuristics”. Theoretical works validate this heuristic method in some situations and several papers report ...

The Integrated Completed Likelihood (ICL) criterion was introduced by Biernacki, Celeux and Govaert (2000) in the model-based clustering framework to select a relevant number of classes and has been used by statisticians in various application areas. A theoretical study of ICL is proposed. A contrast related to the clustering objective is introduced: the conditional classification likelihood. An estimator and model selection criteria are deduced. The properties of these new procedures are studied ...

Skim milk ultrafiltration is worldwide used in dairy. Its management at industrial scale is based on the permeate flux mastering, ...

In cluster analysis, it can be useful to interpret the partition built from the data in the light of external categorical variables which are not directly involved to cluster the data. An approach is proposed in the model-based clustering context to select a number of clusters which both fits the data well and takes advantage of the potential illustrative ability of the external variables. This approach makes use of the integrated joint likelihood of the data and the partitions at hand, namely the ...

We tested the hypothesis of a role of gamma-range synchronized oscillatory activity in visual feature binding by recording evoked potentials from 12 subjects to three stimuli: two coherent ones (a Kanizsa triangle and a real triangle) and a non-coherent one (a Kanizsa triangle in which the inducing disks had been rotated so that no triangle could be perceived). The evoked potentials were analysed by convoluting the signal for each subject and each stimulation type by Gabor wavelets centred from 28 ...

We have studied the nucleation and the physical properties of a -1/2 wedge disclination line near the free surface of a confined nematic liquid crystal. The position of the disclination line has been related to the material parameters (elastic constants, anchoring energy and favored anchoring angle of the molecules at the free surface). The use of a planar model for the structure of the director field (whose predictions have been contrasted to those of a fully three-dimensional model) has allowed us ...

Abstract Based on the analysis of 13 million price records underlying the computation of the French consumer price index, we provide a detailed assessment of consumer price rigidity. Our main results are as follows. The average duration of prices is around 8 months. Price durations and the patterns of price‐setting strongly differ across sectors. Price cuts are almost as frequent as increases, suggesting no specific downward nominal rigidity. Price changes typically have large absolute sizes. Time ...

Based upon a large fraction of the price records used for computing the French CPI, we document consumer price rigidity in France. We first provide a methodological discussion of issues involved in estimating average price duration with micro-data. The average duration of prices in the sectors covered by the database (65% of CPI) is then found to be around 8 months. A strong heterogeneity across sectors both in the average duration of prices and in the pattern of price setting is reported. There ...

The WHO has included the spiritual dimension in its definition of palliative care since 1990, but this dimension is frequently confused with notions of religion. Yet, the spiritual suffering experienced by palliative care patients is primarily a matter of existential suffering. The objective of this study was to examine the ways in which the existential dimension was manifested in the experiences of those present in a palliative care unit. This anthropological monograph was conducted in a palliative ...

Watermarking techniques have been considerably improved for the last past years, aiming at being always more resistant to attacks. In fact, if the main goal of watermarking at the beginning was to secure digital data (audio, image and video), numerous attacks are still now able to cast doubts on the owner's authenticity ; we can distinguish three different groups of attacks : these one which consist to remove the watermark, these one which aim at impairing the data sufficiently to falsify the detection, ...

In dairy industry, the mastering of membrane fouling and cleaning remains a bottleneck of membrane processes especially for aged and degraded membranes. This paper reports an in-depth study of the impact of membrane chemical ageing due to NaOCl disinfection on the fouling and cleaning of PES/PVP membranes. Fouling by skim milk was performed at critical and limiting flux found to have an impact on the initial irreversible fouling, i.e. the one remaining after water rinsing. Furthermore, for filtrations ...

RIPE is a novel deterministic and easily understandable prediction algorithm developed for continuous and discrete ordered data. It infers a model, from a sample, to predict and to explain a real variable Y given an input variable $$X \in \mathcal {X}$$ (features). The algorithm extracts a sparse set of hyperrectangles $$\mathbf {r}\subset \mathcal {X}$$ , which can be thought of as rules of the form If-Then. This set is then turned into a partition of the features space $$\mathcal {X}$$ of which each cell is explained ...
