With unique and important characteristics, salt marsh ecosystems are expected to be affected by elevated CO2 and N enrichment. Although various studies have assessed the effects of those changes on the vegetation of salt marshes, little information is available about their impact on microbes. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the microbial community structure of soils responding to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and N addition (N) over 3 years in salt marsh ecosystem. We employed pyrosequencing, T-RFLP ...

The emergence of technology increasingly depends on innovation ecosystems and frequently involves actors from both industry and academia. However, value creation may experience challenges due to bias formed during public-private innovation ecosystem genesis. This empirical study of bias in a new pan-European public-private initiative provides results regarding innovation ecosystems and the individuals typically active during their genesis: value creation is biased towards the selection of incumbent ...

Summary. The natural killer (NK) cell receptor, NKG2D is a member of the c‐type lectin‐activating receptor family. It is expressed by all NK cells and by a sub‐population of CD8+ T cells. NKG2D engagement with its ligands directly activates NK cells and acts as a co‐stimulator on CD8+ T cells. Recent reports, however, have demonstrated a role for NKG2D in direct T‐cell activation in chronic inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of expression and the functional role of ...

ABSTRACT CD4 + CD25 + regulatory T cells have been shown to maintain peripheral tolerance against self and foreign antigens. In this study we analyzed the effect of circulating CD4 + CD25 + T cells on CD8 + -T-cell responses of patients with chronic and resolved hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We demonstrated that circulating CD4 + CD25 + T cells modulate the function and expansion of HBV-specific CD8 + cells ex vivo in all patients, regardless of whether they have chronic or resolved HBV infection. Xylyl radicals are intermediates in combustion processes since their parent molecules, xylenes, are present as fuel additives. In this study we report on the photoelectron spectra of the three isomeric xylyl radicals and the subsequent decomposition reactions of the o-xylyl radical, generated in a tubular reactor and probed by mass selected threshold photoelectron spectroscopy and VUV synchrotron radiation. Franck–Condon simulations are applied to augment the assignment of elusive species. Below ...

Xylyl (methylbenzyl) radicals are important combustion intermediates, formed in the pyrolysis and oxidation of xylenes and other substituted aromatic fuel additives. We have used VUV synchrotron radiation and imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence (iPEPICO) spectroscopy techniques to identify para-xylylene as the dominant stable C8H8 product arising from thermal decomposition of the meta-xylyl radical. A complex rearrangement from a meta- to a para-substituted aromatic, supported by quantum chemical ...

We present $Spitzer$/IRAC Ch1 and Ch2 monitoring of six brown dwarfs during 8 different epochs over the course of 20 months. For four brown dwarfs, we also obtained simulataneous $HST$/WFC3 G141 Grism spectra during two epochs and derived light curves in five narrow-band filters. Probing different pressure levels in the atmospheres, the multi-wavelength light curves of our six targets all exhibit variations, and the shape of the light curves evolves over the timescale of a rotation period, ranging ...

Potassium disorders are common in patients with kidney disease, particularly in patients with tubular disorders and low glomerular filtration rate. A multidisciplinary group of researchers and clinicians met in October 2018 to identify evidence and address controversies in potassium management. The issues discussed encompassed our latest understanding of the regulation of tubular potassium excretion in health and disease; the relationship of potassium intake to cardiovascular and kidney outcomes, ...

Among the greatest challenges in understanding ultra-cool brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres is the evolution of cloud structure as a function of temperature and gravity. Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte disorder observed in the emergency department. It is often associated with underlying predisposing conditions, such as moderate or severe kidney disease, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, or significant tissue trauma. Additionally, medications, such as inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, potassium-sparing diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, succinylcholine, and digitalis, are associated with hyperkalemia. To this end, Kidney Disease: ...
