Abstract Analysis of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to monitor cancer dynamics and detect minimal residual disease has been an area of increasing interest. Multiple methods have been proposed but few studies have compared the performance of different approaches. Here, we compare detection of ctDNA in serial plasma samples from patients with breast cancer using different tumor‐informed and tumor‐naïve assays designed to detect structural variants (SVs), single nucleotide variants (SNVs), and/or somatic ...

Improving the mental health of young people is a global public health priority. In Latin America, young people living in deprived urban areas face various risk factors for mental distress. However, most either do not develop mental distress in the form of depression and anxiety, or recover within a year without treatment from mental health services. This research programme seeks to identify the personal and social resources that help young people to prevent and recover from mental distress.A cross- ...

The success of forensic science depends heavily on human reasoning abilities. Although we typically navigate our lives well using those abilities, decades of psychological science research shows that human reasoning is not always rational. In addition, forensic science often demands that its practitioners reason in non-natural ways. This article addresses how characteristics of human reasoning (either specific to an individual or in general) and characteristics of situations (either specific to a ...

In response to demographic and health system pressures, the development of non-medical advanced clinical practice (ACP) roles is a key component of National Health Service workforce transformation policy in the UK. This review was undertaken to establish a baseline of evidence on ACP roles and their outcomes, impacts and implementation challenges across the UK.

Introduction A global health workforce crisis, coupled with ageing populations, wars and the rise of non-communicable diseases is prompting all countries to consider the optimal skill mix within their health workforce. The development of advanced clinical practice (ACP) roles for existing non-medical cadres is one potential strategy that is being pursued. In the UK, National Health Service (NHS) workforce transformation programmes are actively promoting the development of ACP roles across a wide range ...

Long-term opioid therapy has been associated with low cortisol levels due to central suppression of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. The implications of hypocortisolism on wellbeing have not been established. Our aim was to determine whether intervention with physiologic glucocorticoid replacement therapy improves wellbeing and analgesic responses in patients with chronic non-cancer pain on long-term opioid therapy with mild cortisol deficiency. We performed a pilot randomized, double-blind, ...

Ag salt nanoparticles were manufactured at high concentration in water in the presence of a series of copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) and maleic anhydride (PEG-MA). The Ostwald ripening behaviour was then examined using the PEG chain length of the copolymer as a variable. The ripening rate was observed to be very slow compared to previous literature studies of bare or surfactant stabilised particles in dilute solution. Despite the hindrance to ripening caused by the presence of the adsorbed copolymer, ...

Rebecca Fitzgerald and colleagues used genome sequence analyses to study the progression from premalignant Barrett's esophagus to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) and found that the majority of recurrently mutated genes in EAC were also mutated in precursor lesions and that only mutations in TP53 and SMAD4 were stage specific. Cancer genome sequencing studies have identified numerous driver genes, but the relative timing of mutations in carcinogenesis remains unclear. The gradual progression from ...

Abstract The taxonomic uniqueness of island populations is often uncertain which hinders effective prioritization for conservation. The Christmas Island shrew (Crocidura attenuata trichura) is the only member of the highly speciose eutherian family Soricidae recorded from Australia. It is currently classified as a subspecies of the Asian gray or long‐tailed shrew (C. attenuata), although it was originally described as a subspecies of the southeast Asian white‐toothed shrew (C. fuliginosa). The Christmas ...

Abstract Translocations are being increasingly proposed as a way of conserving biodiversity, particularly in the management of threatened and keystone species, with the aims of maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function under the combined pressures of habitat fragmentation and climate change. Evolutionary genetic considerations should be an important part of translocation strategies, but there is often confusion about concepts and goals. Here, we provide a classification of translocations based ...

Zibin Chen, Frederíc L. Eldridge, Paul G. Wagner,
We recorded phrenic nerve activity and thalamic single unit firing in unanesthetized, suprathalamically decerebrated, paralyzed and ventilated cats, in which vagi and carotid sinus nerves (CSN) had been ablated. Seventy-six (14%) of 545 neurons in regions of the thalamus related to the ascending reticular system, which had been tonically firing at low respiratory drives, developed rhythmic increases of firing associated with each respiration when drive had been increased by CSN stimulation of hypercapnia. ...
