Foot drop is a quite common problem in nervous system disorders. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has showed to be an alternative approach to correct foot drop improving walking ability in patients with stroke. In this study, twenty patients with stroke in subacute phase were enrolled and randomly divided in two groups: one group performing the NMES (i.e. Walkaide Group, WG) and the Control Group (CG) performing conventional neuromotor rehabilitation. Both groups underwent the same amount ...

In many arthropods, there is a change in relative segment size during post-embryonic development, but how segment differential growth is produced is little known. A new dataset of the highest quality specimens of the 429 Myr old trilobite Aulacopleura koninckii provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate segment growth dynamics and its control in an early arthropod. Morphometric analysis across nine post-embryonic stages revealed a growth gradient in the trunk of A. koninckii. We contrastively ...

Background: The hierarchical use of remotely-sensed imagery from satellites, and then proximally-sensed imagery from helicopter sand drones, can provide a range of spatial and temporal coverage that supports water quality monitoring of complex pollution scenarios. Methods: The study used hierarchical satellite-, helicopter-, and drone-acquired thermal imagery of coastal plumes ranging from 3 to 300 m, near Naples, Italy, and captured temporally- and spatially-overlapping in situ samples to correlate ...

We examined the feedback between the major protein degradation pathway, the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), and protein synthesis in rat and mouse neurons. When protein degradation was inhibited, we observed a coordinate dramatic reduction in nascent protein synthesis in neuronal cell bodies and dendrites. The mechanism for translation inhibition involved the phosphorylation of eIF2α, surprisingly mediated by eIF2α kinase 1, or heme-regulated kinase inhibitor (HRI). Under basal conditions, neuronal ...

Abstract Recent morphometric analysis revealed a juvenile (meraspid) axial growth gradient in the trunk of the ~429 Myr old trilobite Aulacopleura koninckii that resulted from growth control based on positional specification, as is common among extant organisms. Here we explore axial growth gradients in the more anterior body region, the cephalon, and in the cephalon and trunk during subsequent development in the holaspid period. We detected an axial growth gradient in the cephalon in the meraspid ...

The terms botryoid odontogenic cyst and lateral periodontal cyst have both been used to describe a histologically distinct type of cyst characterized by a thin epithelial lining exhibiting focal thickenings or plaques. The cyst reported herein is a well-documented example of this type of cyst, which exhibited persistent and recurrent behavior.

Context. Several exoplanet direct imaging instruments will soon be in operation. They use an extreme adaptive optics (XAO) system to correct the atmospheric turbulence and provide a highly-corrected beam to a near-infrared (NIR) coronagraph for starlight suppression. The performance of the coronagraph is however limited by the non-common path aberrations (NCPA) due to the differential wavefront errors existing between the visible XAO sensing path and the NIR science path, leading to residual speckles ...

We present the upGREAT THz heterodyne arrays for far-infrared astronomy. The Low Frequency Array (LFA) is designed to cover the 1.9-2.5 THz range using 2x7-pixel waveguide-based HEB mixer arrays in a dual polarization configuration. The High Frequency Array (HFA) will perform observations of the [OI] line at ~4.745 THz using a 7-pixel waveguide-based HEB mixer array. This paper describes the common design for both arrays, cooled to 4.5 K using closed- cycle pulse tube technology. We then show the laboratory ...

With use of methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (TFDO), the oxidation of some tripeptide esters protected at the N-terminus with carbamate or amide groups could be achieved efficiently under mild conditions with no loss of configuration at the chiral centers. Expanding on preliminary investigations, it is found that, while peptides protected with amide groups (PG = Ac-, Tfa-, Piv-) undergo exclusive hydroxylation at the side chain, their analogues bearing a carbamate group (PG = Cbz-, Moc-, Boc-, TcBoc-) ...

A synthesis of representative monohydroxy derivatives of valinomycin (VLM) was achieved under mild conditions by direct hydroxylation at the side chains of the macrocyclic substrate using dioxiranes. Results demonstrate that the powerful methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane 1b should be the reagent of choice to carry out these key transformations. Thus, a mixture of compounds derived from the direct dioxirane attack at the β-(CH(3))(2)C-H alkyl chain of one Hyi residue (compound 3a) or of one Val moiety ( ...

Daily water, food, Na and K intakes, urine volume and osmolality, and Na and K excretion were measured for periods up to 6 months. Following lesion, the rats showed the characteristic signs of diabetes insipidus, i.e., polyuria and polydipsia. Among the additional observations made in this study, 3 were most striking. 1) Food intake ...

Hardin s 1968 concept of a "commons dilemma" has received much attention from behavioral scientists concerned with current social and environmental problems that deal with shared resources. The dilemma is that selfish, competitive behavior which appears to be advantageous to the individual actually depletes shared resources to the long-term disadvantage of the group. Various laboratory techniques have been employed to study cooperation and competition in commons dilemma simulations. Two programs ...

A correct interplay between dopamine (DA) and glutamate is essential for corticostriatal synaptic plasticity and motor activity. In an experimental model of Parkinson's disease (PD) obtained in rats, the complete depletion of striatal DA, mimicking advanced stages of the disease, results in the loss of both forms of striatal plasticity: long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). However, early PD stages are characterized by an incomplete reduction in striatal DA levels. The mechanism ...
