We used qualitative complementary DNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-AFLP) differential display analysis and real-time, quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to identify genes in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, whose transcription either changes in response to exposure to a pathogenic bacterium (Vibrio tubiashii) or varies between families known to differ in sensitivity to heat stress, before and at 12 and 36 h after bacterial exposure at a temperature of 25 degrees C. Jessica Lang, Paul D. Bliese, Jonas W. B. Lang, Amy B. Adler,

The organizational justice literature has consistently documented substantial correlations between organizational justice and employee depression. Existing theoretical literature suggests this relationship occurs because perceptions of organizational (in)justice lead to subsequent psychological health problems. Building on recent research on the affective nature of justice perceptions, in the present research we broaden this perspective by arguing there are also theoretical arguments for a reverse ...

Favourable small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) survival outcomes have been reported in patients with paraneoplastic neurological disorders (PNDs) associated with neuronal antibodies (Neur-Abs), but the presence of a PND might have expedited diagnosis. Our aim was to establish whether neuronal antibodies, independent of clinical neurological features, correlate with SCLC survival.262 consecutive SCLC patients were examined: of these, 24 with neurological disease were excluded from this study. The remaining ...

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality in premature infants. Recent advances have allowed the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in the assessment of respiratory and cardiac disease in infants with BPD. In adults and older pediatric patients, decreased CMR interventricular septal curvature correlates with increased mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance. The current study sought ...

Patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) survive longer if they have the antibody-mediated Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), making this autoimmune disorder a prototype disease for studying cancer immunosurveillance. Patients with nontumor LEMS (NT-LEMS) never develop SCLC but are otherwise indistinguishable clinically. Therefore, we have compared immunogenetic factors in SCLC-LEMS and NT-LEMS and studied their role in the pathogenesis of LEMS and survival from SCLC. In 48 British and 29 ...

To determine the frequency and range of paraneoplastic neurologic disorders (PNDs) and neuronal antibodies in small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC).Two hundred sixty-four consecutive patients with biopsy-proven SCLC were recruited at the time of tumor diagnosis. All patients underwent full neurologic examination. Serum samples were taken prior to chemotherapy and analyzed for 15 neuronal antibodies. Thirty-eight healthy controls were analyzed in parallel.PNDs were quite prevalent (n = 24, 9.4%), most frequently ...

Abstract Cytokine-induced signal transduction is executed by natural biological switches, which among many others control immune-related processes. Here, we show that synthetic cytokine receptors (SyCyRs) can induce cytokine signaling using non-physiological ligands. High-affinity GFP- and mCherry-nanobodies were fused to transmembrane and intracellular domains of the IL-6/IL-11 and IL-23 cytokine receptors gp130 and IL-12Rβ1/IL-23R, respectively. A study of the condensation of keten acetals with some halonaphthoquinones has led to the simple and regiospecific synthesis of some naturally occurring anthraquinones: catenarin, helminthosporin, emodin, and chrysophanol. The results show unambiguously that a previously proposed mechanism is erroneous. The reaction of these acetals with chloromaleic anhydride also provided a one-step preparation of some substituted phthalic anhydrides.
