Abstract The C-variant of a T-13910C polymorphism (rs4988235; NT_022135.15:g.25316568G > A) upstream of the lactase phlorizin hydrolase (LPH) gene causes lactose intolerance. Association studies with differences in bone parameters and fracture risk have been inconclusive. The objective of this study was to examine the association of LPH rs4988235 with body height and bone parameters and calcium homeostasis in two elderly populations of Dutch Caucasians and assess interaction with vitamin D receptor ( ...

Illudin S and its semisynthetic analogue acylfulvene (AF) are structurally similar but elicit different biological responses. AF is a bioreductive alkylating anticancer agent with a favorable therapeutic index, while illudin S is in general highly toxic. AF toxicity is dependent on the reductase enzyme prostaglandin reductase 1 (PTGR1) for activation to a cytotoxic reactive intermediate. While illudin S can be metabolized by PTGR1, available data suggest that its toxicity does not correspond with ...

It is now clear that medulloblastoma (MB), one of the most clinically challenging paediatric brain tumours, is not a single disease entity. Rather, it comprises four distinct molecular subgroups (Wnt pathway activated (WNT), Sonic hedgehog pathway activated (SHH), and the less well-characterised Group 3 and Group 4) [7, 15], which are highly divergent in terms of their patient demographics, underlying biology, and survival outcomes [4, 6]. These subgroups are becoming increasingly important, not only ...

We have obtained a deep 8-field XMM-Newton mosaic of M33 covering the galaxy out to the D$_{25}$ isophote and beyond to a limiting 0.2--4.5 keV unabsorbed flux of 5$\times$10$^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (L${>}$4$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the distance of M33). These data allow complete coverage of the galaxy with high sensitivity to soft sources such as diffuse hot gas and supernova remnants. Here we describe the methods we used to identify and characterize 1296 point sources in the 8 fields. ...

Historical risk stratification criteria for medulloblastoma rely primarily on clinicopathological variables pertaining to age, presence of metastases, extent of resection, histological subtypes and in some instances individual genetic aberrations such as MYC and MYCN amplification. In 2010, an international panel of experts established consensus defining four main subgroups of medulloblastoma (WNT, SHH, Group 3 and Group 4) delineated by transcriptional profiling. This has led to the current generation ...

Coupled CFD-DEM simulations of a three-dimensional prismatic spouted bed with liquid injection were performed. Spouting stability is investigated by means of pressure drop fluctuation analysis and high speed camera recording. To determine the influence of flow stability on coating quality, droplets are injected in a post-processing step and deposited on colliding solid parcels. In order to estimate liquid holdup in the bed, heat transfer and subsequent evaporation of the surface liquid film were ...

Six- to 15-day blastemata of regenerating forelimbs of Amblystoma larvae were deplanted to the dorsal fin region both with and without their stumps attached. With stump present the deplant regenerates developed skeletal and muscular elements of the limb. In the absence of stump tissues no blastema developed a musculature whereas blastemata of all ages gave rise to elements of the forelimb skeleton.

Are the limits on the utilization of information imposed by the processing capacity of the sense organs or the central nervous system? An answer to this question was sought by the addition to or subtraction of eyes from salamander larvae by transplantation or removal. The animals were then trained in a sight-dependent paradigm to determine what effect additional or reduced visual input had on initial learning and the maintenance of a learned response. The level of learning achieved increased in ...

Abstract Fibroblast growth factors interact with appropriate endothelial cell (EC) surface receptors and initiate intracellular signal cascades, which participate in modulating blood vessel growth. EC, upon exposure to basic fibroblast growth factors (bFGFs) undergo profound functional alterations, which depend on their actual sensitivity and involve gene expression and de novo protein synthesis. We investigated the effects of bFGF on signaling pathways of EA.hy926 cells in different environments. ...

In this contribution, a three-dimensional prismatic spouted bed for coating and granulation purposes is investigated. To determine the influence of a particle size distribution on the spouting behavior, binary and ternary mixtures of different particle sizes (γ-Al2O3 particles) are used. The stability is quantified using the Fourier transforms of the pressure drop signals. The stability range of binary and ternary systems differs from the monodisperse systems. Both the lower and the upper velocity ...

Abstract There is a widespread belief that innervation is an indispensible requirement for regeneration in salamander limbs. Several independent investigations have indicated that this view is too rigid. In this laboratory it was observed that regeneration proceeds in orbitally transplanted limbs, but the signs of innervation are few when the tissues are stained with ordinary histological procedures. The present study was conducted to find out if orbitally transplanted limbs do, in fact, possess ...

Cost-effective surveys of low density koala populations are challenging, but technological developments in the acoustics field offer great potential for landscape-scale surveys and monitoring. We assessed passive acoustic recording coupled with automated call identification as a survey method for koalas Phascolarctos cinereus . Surveys targeted areas of previously known koala activity based on scat surveys in southern forests of New South Wales where a low density of koalas is suspected. We set 24 ...

Salamander larvae typically adapt their dermal melanophores to achieve camouflage, and it has been known for some time that removal of the eyes abolishes the response. Here we survey the contribution of the optic system to the bright and dark camouflage reactions and report that: the stimulus depends on an interaction between the direct and reflected light; an eye mounted atop the head and oriented vertically tended not to support camouflage, even though the animal responded to visual cues and learned ...

Abstract Peptide‐derived protease inhibitors are an important class of compounds with the potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a series of triazole‐containing macrocyclic protease inhibitors pre‐organized into a β‐strand conformation and an evaluation of their activity against a panel of proteases. Acyclic azido–alkyne‐based aldehydes are also evaluated for comparison. The macrocyclic peptidomimetics showed considerable activity towards calpain II, cathepsin ...

We report the isolation and detailed structural characterization, by solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopy, of the neutral mono- and bis-NHC adducts of bis(catecholato)diboron (B2 cat2 ). The bis-NHC adduct undergoes thermally induced rearrangement, forming a six-membered -B-C=N-C=C-N-heterocyclic ring via C-N bond cleavage and ring expansion of the NHC, whereas the mono-NHC adduct is stable. Bis(neopentylglycolato)diboron (B2 neop2 ) is much more reactive than B2 cat2 giving a ring expanded product ...
