Background Genetic generalised epilepsy is the most common type of inherited epilepsy. Despite a high concordance rate of 80% in monozygotic twins, the genetic background is still poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the burden of rare genetic variants in genetic generalised epilepsy. Methods For this exome-based case-control study, we used three different genetic generalised epilepsy case cohorts and three independent control cohorts, all of European descent. Cases included in the study were ...

Abstract Tests in which tips of outer enclosing leaves of vegetative azalea buds were dipped in 4.2% methyl decanoate emulsion indicated that the pinching agent does not translocate in sufficient quantity to kill the meristem. Direct contact must be achieved. A morphological comparison of the vegetative buds of an azalea cultivar responding poorly, ‘White Gish’, and one responding readily, ‘Coral Bells’, to pinching agents indicated that the former has (1) an abnormally long enclosing sheath of leaves ...

Leslie Banks‐Sills, Paul A. Wawrzynek, Bruce Carter, Anthony R. Ingraffea, Itai Hershkovitz,

The problem of a crack in a general anisotropic material under conditions of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is examined. In Part I, three methods were presented for calculating stress intensity factors for various anisotropic materials in which z = 0 is a symmetry plane and the crack front is along the z-axis. These included displacement extrapolation, the M-integral and the separated J-integrals. In this study, general material anisotropy is considered in which the material and crack coordinates ...

Payments for environmental services (PES) are often viewed as a way to simultaneously improve conservation outcomes and the wellbeing of rural households who receive the payments. However, evidence for such win-win outcomes has been elusive. We add to the growing literature on conservation program impacts by using primary household survey data to evaluate the socioeconomic impacts of participation in Costa Rica’s PES program. Despite the substantial cash transfers to voluntary participants in this ...

Terrence Sills, Paul Fletcher,

Repeated morphine treatments result in sensitization, an increase in the efficacy of morphine to stimulate locomotor activity. This study examined the effects of increasing serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) transmission on morphine-sensitization. For five days rats were administered saline or 5.0 mg/kg fluoxetine prior to treatment with saline or 5.0 mg/kg morphine. Twenty-one days later, rats were tested for their locomotor response to 2.0 mg/kg morphine. Fluoxetine treatment attenuated the ...

Hatchery-reared age 1+ and 4+ lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) were assayed to determine the effectiveness of coloured, strobing LED light guidance device (LGD) at achieving behavioural guidance for attraction or avoidance responses. Based on an initial y-maze dichotomous choice study in age 1+ fish during daytime, we selected green, blue, orange, and full-spectrum white light, all strobing at 1 Hz, for further testing. During nighttime light guidance trials, age 1+ sturgeon demonstrated the fastest ...

David Sills, Paul Joe,

The science of understanding severe thunderstorms and developing techniques for their prediction is relatively young, with most fundamental research having been carried out only during the last 75 years. Though it is not widely known, Canada has played an important role in such research and development, and some of Canada's atmospheric scientists have been pioneers globally in a number of areas. This brief review attempts to describe the full breadth of the Canadian contribution, with sections dedicated ...

Armstrong suggests that James's perspective is essentially phenomenological--that his understanding of the process of knowing, the art of fiction, and experience as a whole coincides in important ways with the ideas of the leading phenomenologists. He examines the connections between phenomenology's theory of consciousness and existentialism's analyses of the lived world in relation to James's fascination with consciousness and what is commonly called his Originally published in 1983.A UNC Press ...

Understanding the biological basis of drug resistance and developing techniques which facilitate prediction of outcome have the potential to revolutionize the pharmacotherapy of epilepsy. We have performed a pilot study of metabonomic analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS) in an effort to identify metabolic biomarkers of response to antiepileptic drug treatment. Pre-treatment serum samples were obtained from 125 patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy ...

We have performed a randomised, prospective study to compare the efficacy and tolerability of sodium valproate (VPA) and lamotrigine (LTG) monotherapy, and their effects on circulating androgenic hormones, in newly diagnosed epilepsy. A total of 225 patients (116 male; median age 35 years, range 13–80 years) were followed-up at 6-weekly intervals until they reached an end-point (12 months' seizure freedom; withdrawal due to intolerable side-effects; lack of efficacy despite adequate dosing).
