Cadherins seem to play and important role in prostate cancer (PCa) progression. E-cadherin loss of expression has been associated with poor prognosis; P-cadherin's role is still elusive. Although pT3 PCa is often considered "high-risk cancer," it does not exhibit an uniformly poor prognosis. Herein, we assessed the prognostic value and survival impact of E-cadherin and P-cadherin immunoexpression in pT3 PCa. Radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens from 102 pT3 PCa patients treated between 1991 and 2014 ...

Increasing detection of small renal masses by imaging techniques entails the need for accurate discrimination between benign and malignant renal cell tumors (RCTs) as well as among malignant RCTs, owing to differential risk of progression through metastization. Although histone methylation has been implicated in renal tumorigenesis, its potential as biomarker for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) progression remains largely unexplored. Thus, we aimed to characterize the differential expression of histone ...

Abstract The recent reform of the European water policy recognizes the importance of developing effective mechanisms to support public and stakeholder participation in river basin decision‐making processes. This paper critically reviews the evaluation processes of different types of water related project in five European countries (Portugal, Greece, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Spain), with respect to participatory criteria. The horizontal comparison of these cases accounted for criteria ...

Renal cell tumors (RCTs) are the most lethal of the common urological cancers. The widespread use of imaging entailed an increased detection of small renal masses, emphasizing the need for accurate distinction between benign and malignant RCTs, which is critical for adequate therapeutic management. Histone methylation has been implicated in renal tumorigenesis, but its potential clinical value as RCT biomarker remains mostly unexplored. Hence, the main goal of this study was to identify differentially ...

Abstract The palladium(II)-promoted reaction of a variety of olefins and bromamine-T provided N-tosyl-2-substituted aziridines under mild conditions. Olefins bearing chiral appendages gave only a poor to modest diastereoselectivity. Appropriate deuterated olefins were selected to study the stereochemistry of the reaction. A Pd(IV) intermediate is proposed as the aziridinating species.

Abstract Background Breast cancer (BrC) remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in women, mainly due to recurrent and/or metastatic events, entailing the need for biomarkers predictive of progression to advanced disease. MicroRNAs hold promise as noninvasive cancer biomarkers due to their inherent stability and resilience in tissues and bodily fluids. There is increasing evidence that specific microRNAs play a functional role at different steps of the metastatic cascade, behaving as signaling ...

Covalent RNA modifications, such as N-6-methyladenosine (m6A), have been associated with various biological processes, but their role in cancer remains largely unexplored. m6A dynamics depends on specific enzymes whose deregulation may also impact in tumorigenesis. Herein, we assessed the differential abundance of m6A, its writer VIRMA and its reader YTHDF3, in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs), looking for clinicopathological correlates. In silico analysis of TCGA data disclosed altered expression ...

Breast cancer (BrC) is the most frequent malignancy and the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Approximately 70% of BrC are classified as luminal-like subtype, expressing the estrogen receptor. One of the most common and effective adjuvant therapies for this BrC subtype is endocrine therapy. However, its effectiveness is limited, with relapse occurring in up to 40% of patients. Because microRNAs have been associated with several mechanisms underlying endocrine resistance and sensitivity, ...

BALB/c mice, 14 days of age, received an intraperitoneal injection at 10 µg/g of DEN. The mice received either of two doses of pequi oil (100 or 400 mg/kg) daily from the age of 30 days and were killed at the age of 189 days. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease and additional biomarkers for individually predicting patient outcomes are needed. Aberrant membrane E-cadherin immunoexpression has been demonstrated in lobular breast cancer. Also, E-cadherin nuclear staining has been reported, associating with prognosis in various tumors. Here, we explore whether membrane or nuclear staining of E-cadherin has the potential to dictate prognosis of patients with lobular breast cancer. We selected a cohort of 285 consecutively ...

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are strikingly heterogeneous, reflecting a complex tumor model, posing serious challenges for pathologists. Accurate classification and staging, according to most recent systems, is fundamental. We aimed to revise a series of consecutively diagnosed TGCTs (2005–2016) in light of the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging systems, discussing dilemmas imposed to pathologists. Lung cancer (LC) cells frequently express high levels of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). Although these levels grossly correlate with the likelihood of response to specific checkpoint inhibitors, the response prediction is rather imperfect, and more accurate predictive biomarkers are mandatory. We examined the methylation profile of RAD51B (RAD51Bme) as a candidate predictive biomarker for anti-PD-1 therapy efficacy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), correlating with patients' outcome. The Water Framework Directive institutionalises participatory processes in river basin planning across the European Union. This paper reports on three case studies from southern Europe where conflicts over water exist. In each a different method for participation was experimentally employed: scenario workshops, mediated modelling, and social multicriteria evaluation. A new synthetic pathway for the formation of deoxyguanosine−monoarylamine adducts is described, involving the generation and use of arylnitrenes as electrophilic synthons. Photolysis of aryl azides, the most common method for generating arylnitrenes, was tested in the presence of 2'-deoxyguanosine. N-(2'-Deoxyguanosin-8-yl)monoarylamine (dG-C8-Ar) adducts were obtained, but the yields were typically low. The present article is centered in the analytical reading of some chronicles published in the First Book of Chronicles (1998) and the novel Sôbolos rios que vão (2010), by António Lobo Antunes. This thesis shows how time, the memory, childhood and their respective events, as apparently autobiographical aspects are linked to the texture of some chronic and some novel. In fact, we can read in fiction several fictional possibilities and biographical. Structural elements of the Portuguese writer António ...

Breast cancer (BC) is a major health concern and better understanding of its biology might improve treatment decisions and patient outcomes. Histone3 Lysine27 tri-methylation (H3K27me3) is a post-translational histone modification frequently associated with altered gene expression. In BC patients, lower H3K27me3 expression has been associated with worse prognosis. We assessed H3K27me3 immunoexpression with digital imaging software assistance, in a cohort of luminal-like BC patients with long-term ...

Abstract: Bearing in mind that the colonial experience decisively influenced the Anglophone and the Lusophone worlds, it is important to consider the literary production of writers from different traditions from a comparative perspective. Their books not only problematize cultural and power structures, but also examine the implications of this process for the construction and transformation of individual and collective identities. In this paper, I propose to compare two books: Os cus de Judas (1979) ...
