The development of circular economies due to the limitation of natural resources is becoming a common strategy of paramount importance among different countries. In Spain, given the strategic nature of its olive industry, trying to value one of its main residuals (olive pomace) alone or together with other residues through its chemical transformation in methanol is a promising research line. One of the key variables that would make the investment advisable or not is the future value of the methanol ...

The phosphorus metabolism of sulfate‐reducing bacteria was, for the first time, probed by in vivo 31 P NMR. A novel phosphoric anhydride diester compound was detected in Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 27774 at intracellular concentration up to 5 mM. The compound has been extracted and partially purified by anion‐exchange chromatography and analysed by 31 P, 13 C and 1 H NMR. These studies show that the novel phosphorus‐containing compound is formed by five carbon atoms and is probably cyclic, ...

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by total mesorectal excision has emerged as the standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients. However, many cases do not respond to neoadjuvant CRT, suffering unnecessary toxicities and surgery delays. Thus, identification of predictive biomarkers for neoadjuvant CRT is a current clinical need. In the present study, microRNA-31 expression was measured in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) biopsies from 78 patients diagnosed ...

Background : Spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) is a rare pathology in the neonatal period. Objective : To describe the clinical evolution of 2 newborns with spontaneous gastrointestinal perforations, in order to discuss clinical manifestations, diagnosis and medical-surgical treatment. Also, review possible events that may trigger this pathology. Case-reports : preterm newborns with SIP, both males with birth weight 680 and 1 370 g, showing clinical signs of abdominal distension before 36 hours ...

The Water Framework Directive institutionalises participatory processes in river basin planning across the European Union. This paper reports on three case studies from southern Europe where conflicts over water exist. In each a different method for participation was experimentally employed: scenario workshops, mediated modelling, and social multicriteria evaluation. Scenario workshops and mediated modelling proved well suited to the early stages of a planning process (problem solving and identification ...

The treatment of choice for locally advanced rectal cancer is preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Despite around half of patients do not respond, suffer unnecessary toxicities and surgery delays, there are no biomarkers to guide preoperative CRT outcome. MicroRNA-31 (miR-31) has been related to acquisition of 5-fluorouracil resistance in rectal cancer however its potential predictive value of response to preoperative CRT in locally advanced rectal cancer remains unknown. Eight-two patients diagnosed ...
