Aplectana longa n. sp. (Ascaridida: Cosmocercidae) from the small intestine of Gastrotheca microdiscus (Amphibia: Hemiphractidae) is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by the combination of a unique set of morphological characters: 1) Large body size in both sexes; 2) Lateral alae absent; 3) Gubernaculum present, small, thin, weakly sclerotized, pointed at the distal end and curved proximally at the end, with a small and punctiform papilla-like dilation, and 4) Caudal papillae ...

A new nematode species, Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) fuscovaria sp. n. (Rhabdochonidae), is described based on specimens collected from the stomach of the snouted treefrog Scinax fuscovarius (Hylidae) in the So Sebastio do Paraso farm, municipality of Boa Esperan do Sul, southeastern Brazil. This species is characterized by deirids small, simple and stylet shaped, prostom funnel-shaped with 14 teeth, conspicuous left spicule (585.7 m), distal tip slightly widened, moderately dilated, right spicule (132. ...

Numerous pseudoplasmodia containing myxospores belonging to the genus Cystodiscus were found in the gallbladder of Elachistocleis cesarii from Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Herein, we describe Cystodiscus elachistocleis sp. nov., using morphological and small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences. The mature myxospores were ellipsoid to ovoid, measuring in average 10.6 (9.8–11.2) μm in length and 6.2 (5.6–6.6) μm in width. Polar capsules were pyriform and equal in size measuring in average 3.6 (2.8–4.3) μm ...

A new nematode species of the Diplotriaenidae is described from the Neotropical region. The species was found infecting the body cavity of the snake Xenodon merremii (Wagler in Spix) collected in the municipality of Barbalha, Ceará State, Northeastern Brazil. Hastospiculum nordestinum n. sp. differs from the congeners by combining the following characters: caudal end ornamented with lateral alae not surrounding the tail end and not connected, supported by eight pairs of pedunculated papillae (three ...

The inactivation of Giardia duodenalis cysts by vinegar was investigated. Experiments were carried out in 100 ml volume of vinegar (acetic acid 4%), undiluted or diluted in distilled water in ratios of 1:1, 1:15.6, and 1:62.5 (vol/vol), which were inoculated with 5 × 105 cysts obtained from human feces. Experiments were performed at room temperature (21 ± 1 °C) and at 4 °C. After contact times of 1.5 min, 10, 30, and 60 min, the cysts were recovered from the treatment fluid and subjected to an in vitro excystation ...

Cosmocerca spp. are common nematode parasites of amphibians. We provide herein molecular data for two species of Cosmocerca and describe a new species, Cosmocerca albopunctata n. sp., using light microscopy and molecular data (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 - COI mtDNA). Cosmocerca albopunctata n. sp. can be easily distinguished from other congeneric species by the combination of characteristics such as body size, length of spicules and gubernaculum, and the arrangements and number of caudal papillae ( ...

The Amphibia are considered the most threatened vertebrate class globally, yet in Brazil they are also one of the more diverse and species rich groups. Although, in recent years there has been strong focus on amphibian related research, their parasites have not received the same attention. The present study aimed to describe three new species of Hepatozoon parasitising ...

Abstract Deforestation can compromise ecological processes and biotic interactions, including the host–parasite relationship. While some parasites infect only one host, others require multiple hosts to complete their complex life cycles. In this context, different parasites may have different demands and traits and may have specific responses to habitat degradation. Here, we tested whether forest cover has different effects on different frogs' parasites, as chytrid ( Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis ; ...

Thus, the present study aimed to bring new insights on the diversity of species of Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina: Hepatozoidae) infecting Brazilian snakes from the Midwest and Southeast regions. The snakes were captured from 2018 to 2020 from the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and São Paulo. Three to five blood smears were made and the ...

Myxozoans are microscopic cnidarians that mainly parasitize fishes. The present study aimed to describe a new myxozoan parasite from the gills of Boulengerella cuvieri (Spix and Agassiz, 1829) by morphological and molecular analysis. The fish was collected in 2019 at the Pindaíba River, municipality of Cocalinho, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Whitish and circular plasmodia were found in the primary gill filaments, occupying an intralamellar position, with an average of 0.5 mm in diameter. Henneguya ...

Stunning before slaughter should promote the induction and permanence of the animals in a state of unconsciousness to avoid or minimize stress. In bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) slaughter the most used stunning methods are thermonarcosis and electronarcosis. However, little is known about the effect of these two techniques on the bullfrog's welfare. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of two different stunning methods on some stress indicators in bullfrogs. A completely randomized ...

Abstract In this article the authors analyse the characteristics, properties and behaviour of a new composite material, called Core-Y, resulting from the combination of granular cork and an epoxy resin. This article comprises three main parts. The first describes the manufacturing process of Core-Y. The second develops an experimental study of the material based on quasi-static axial compression test on cylindrical specimens of Core-Y. The results of the experimental tests are presented and analysed ...
