Scientists have long been trying to understand why the Neotropical region holds the highest diversity of birds on Earth. Recently, there has been increased interest in morphological variation between and within species, and in how climate, topography, and anthropogenic pressures may explain and affect phenotypic variation. Because morphological data are not always available for many species at the local or regional scale, we are limited in our understanding of intra- and interspecies spatial morphological ...

Gestural interaction devices emerged and originated various studies on multimodal human–computer interaction to improve user experience (UX). However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the use of these devices to enhance learning. We present an exploratory study which analysed the UX with a multimodal immersive videogame prototype, based on a Portuguese historical/cultural episode. Evaluation tests took place in high school environments and public videogaming events. Two users would be present simultaneously ...

Transportation has significant economic, social and environmental impacts and is an important dimension of urban sustainability. Public transportation is recognisably a smart, efficient and sustainable mode of transportation. This paper describes a multi-criteria analysis to assess the sustainable performance of a bus transportation system in a Portuguese mid-sized municipality. The assessment is based on a list of 18 environmental, social, economic and institutional indicators. A group of specialists ...

A survey of the endophagous insects fauna associated to Asteraceae capitula was carried out from 2000 to 2002 in eight cerrado sensu stricto sites located in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Sixty-four endophagous species of Diptera and Lepidoptera were recorded from 49 asteracean host plants. Approximately half of the species were obtained from a single locality, with a large proportion emerging from a single sample (unicates). Thirty percent of the species were singletons (i.e. only one individual ...

Artificial habitats have become common in coastal areas worldwide and may influence the structure and functioning of benthic ecosystems. We analyze the influence of piers on the benthic morphofunctional groups of rocky seaweeds and of soft bottom macrofauna in the channel of Conceição Lagoon (southern Brazil). The main impact is a reduction in the luminosity available for photosynthetic activity which is directly related to a decrease in the biomasses of sediment microphytobenthos and of more highly ...

Intrahepatic lithiasis (IHL) is a rare disease in the western world. Complications associated with IHL include acute cholangitis, liver atrophy, secondary biliary cirrhosis, and risk for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Liver resection is considered the treatment of choice for IHL. The objective of this study was to analyze patients who underwent liver resection for non-Asian hepatolithiasis. 127 patients with symptomatic non-Asian hepatolithiasis underwent resection in six institutions. An Emsian-Eifelian carbonate-volcaniclastic sequence in south-western Ossa-Morena Zone (Portugal) was studied in terms of reef fauna, conodont biostratigraphy, macro- and micro-facies and magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy. The results point to a bracketing between the Po. patulus and T. australis conodont biozones (uppermost Emsian - middle-late Eifelian). The field data, facies analysis and reef fauna indicate that the sequence is composed entirely of calciturbidite and debris-flow deposits (intercalated ...

Alien weed species rank among the most important threats to conservation of biodiversity, making understanding the extent to which protected natural areas are vulnerable to invasion by weeds pivotal in long-term maintenance and conservation of biodiversity. We investigated the potential geographic range of the invasive paleotropical weed, smooth crotalaria, in protected natural areas across Brazil. The ecological niche dimensions of smooth crotalaria in Africa (its putative original distribution) ...

The traditional approaches to the design of distributed safety-critical systems, due to fault-tolerance reasons, have mostly considered static cyclic table-based traffic scheduling. However, there is a growing demand for operational flexibility and integration, mainly to improve efficiency in the use of system resources, with the network playing a central role to support such properties. This calls for dynamic online traffic scheduling techniques so that dynamic communication requirements are adequately ...

Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate is a potent anticoagulant polysaccharide extracted from sea cucumber. Its anticoagulant activity is attributed to the presence of sulfated fucose branches. We have shown that intravascular injection of fucosylated chondroitin sulfate inhibits thrombus formation in a venous and an arterial shunt model in rats. Since this compound resists digestion by enzymes that cleave mammalian glycosaminoglycans, we investigated the possibility that fucosylated chondroitin sulfate ...

Abstract. 1. The ways in which a soil fertility gradient affects three trophic level food webs defined by plants of the family Asteraceae, flower‐head herbivores, and their parasitoids was investigated. It was tested how the fertility gradient alters: (i) the abundance and richness of plants, herbivores, and their parasitoids, (ii) the herbivore–plant ratio, and (iii) the connectance of the plant–herbivore community matrix. 2. From April to May 2000, plants and insects were sampled in 16 Brazilian ...

This paper presents a simulation code for the thermal power plant AVV1, located in Copenhagen, Denmark, in response to the challenge launched at the ECOS 2003 congress. The simulation program was specially created for this contest, including the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of water, as based on IAPWS97. Every component of the plant is modeled through mass and energy balance equations, and the solution of the whole system is achieved by a successive substitution scheme. The plant ...

Candidiasis is an opportunistic mycosis with high annual incidence worldwide. In these infections, Candida albicans is the chief pathogen owing to its multiple virulence factors. C. albicans infections are usually treated with azoles, polyenes and echinocandins. However, these antifungals may have limitations regarding toxicity, relapse of infections, high cost, and emergence of antifungal resistance. Thus, the development of nanocarrier systems, such as metal nanoparticles, has been widely investigated. ...
