Visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensors are promising proximal soil sensing (PSS) tools for predicting soil key fertility attributes. This work aimed at assessing the performance of the individual and combined use of vis-NIR and XRF sensors to predict clay, organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH, base saturation (V), and extractable (ex-) nutrients (ex-P, ex-K, ex-Ca, and ex-Mg) in Brazilian tropical soils. Individual models using the ...

The successful use of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) sensors for soil analysis requires the selection of an optimal procedure of data acquisition and a simple modelling approach. This work aimed at assessing the performance of a portable XRF (XRF) sensor set up with two different X-ray tube configurations (combinations of voltage and current) to predict nine key soil fertility attributes: (clay, organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH, base saturation (V), and extractable ...

Rapid, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly analysis of key soil fertility attributes requires an ideal combination of sensors. The individual and combined performance of visible and near infrared (VNIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was assessed for predicting clay, organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH, base saturation (V), and extractable (ex-) nutrients in tropical soils. A set of 102 ...

Soft Tissue Sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous and rare group of tumors. Immune cells, soluble factors, and immune checkpoints are key elements of the complex tumor microenvironment. Monitoring these elements could be used to predict the outcome of the disease, the response to therapy, and lead to the development of new immunotherapeutic approaches. Tumor-infiltrating B cells, Natural Killer (NK) cells, tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs), and dendritic cells (DCs) were associated with a better outcome. ...

Abstract Geographic variation in bird song that is described as local song dialects refers to a mosaic pattern of distribution of songs in a population within the dispersal capacities of the species. Corn buntings (Miliaria calandra) in the region of Alentejo, Portugal, show such local dialects. However, an interesting aspect of this population is that song types are restricted to sub - groups of males within each dialect rather than all males singing all song types as in other populations. After describing ...

Proximal soil sensing technologies, such as visible and near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VNIR), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), are dry-chemistry techniques that enable rapid and environmentally friendly soil fertility analyses. The application of XRF and LIBS sensors in an individual or combined manner for soil fertility prediction is quite recent, especially in tropical soils. The shared dataset presents spectral data of VNIR, ...

The debate over political gender quotas is unduly confined to a supposed trade‐off between diversity and competence. We characterize the effects of a political gender quota in a citizen‐candidate model, to find that quotas do increase the overall quality of those elected whenever the rewards from public office are high, or the skill premium or political gender discrimination are sufficiently low. In such cases, high‐skill women candidates run for office in sufficiently high numbers, driving off ...

This study presents data regarding the circulation of astrovirus in Goiânia-GO and Brasília-DF. These viruses were detected in fecal samples from hospitalized children up to five years old with and without acute gastroenteritis. A total of 1244 fecal samples were collected in two periods, 1994 to 1996 (Brasília) and 1998 to 2002 (Goiânia and Brasília), and were analyzed for viral RNA using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Positivity rates of 4.3 and 0.5% for astrovirus ...

The mechanism of genome transfer from the virion to the host cytoplasm is critical to understand and control the beginning of viral infection. The initial steps of bacteriophage SPP1 infection of the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis were monitored by following changes in permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane (CM). SPP1 leads to a distinctively faster CM depolarization than the one caused by podovirus ϕ29 or myovirus SP01 during B. subtilis infection. Depolarization requires interaction ...

Phlebotomine vectors transmit parasites and can cause visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or cutaneous leishmaniasis (TL). Phlebotomine females are hematophagous but need to ingest carbohydrates, possibly promoting the development of protozoan parasites in their digestive tract. Communities located in the interface between marine/brackish and freshwater habitats are likely to be early responders to climatic changes as they are exposed to both saline and freshwater conditions, and thus are expected to be sensitive to any change in their environmental conditions. Climatic effects are predicted to reduce the availability of groundwater, altering the hydrological balance on estuarine-aquifer interfaces. Here, we aimed to characterise the estuarine faunal community along a gradient ...

The industry of ornamental rocks from South-Eastern Brazil (Santo Antônio de Pádua, RJ) produces huge amounts of waste in the form of powder. The re-use of ornamental rock powder waste to produce red ceramics for civil construction using the powder technology is described. The waste was added gradually up to 20 wt.%. Rectangular samples were dry pressed and sintered at temperatures ranging from 850 to 1150 °C. The physical–mechanical properties as function of sintering temperature and waste addition ...

To obtain a better performance when modeling soil spectral data for attribute prediction, researchers frequently resort to data pretreatment, aiming to reduce noise and highlight the spectral features. Even with the awareness of the existence of dimensionality reduction statistical approaches that can cope with data sparse dimensionality, few studies have explored its applicability in soil sensing. Therefore, this study’s objective was to assess the predictive performance of two dimensionality reduction ...

The high viscosity of heavy oil calls for additional efforts to ensure the production in deep offshore fields, requiring innovative ways to optimize oil recovery. Considering the production by pumping system, one of the current approaches to increase the profitability is to associate the in-well Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) and the Seabed Boosting ESP (SB-ESP). In this Tandem system, the oil must flow through the ESP while it is failed or damaged until it reaches the SB-ESP, resulting in additional ...
