Abstract Climate change, biodiversity loss, and chemical pollution are planetary‐scale emergencies requiring urgent mitigation actions. As these “triple crises” are deeply interlinked, they need to be tackled in an integrative manner. However, while climate change and biodiversity are often studied together, chemical pollution as a global change factor contributing to worldwide biodiversity loss has received much less attention in biodiversity research so far. Here, we review evidence showing that ...

ABSTRACT Pycnodonts are a well-known group of neopterygian fossil fishes with an age range from the Late Triassic to the Eocene. In the present work a new genus, Potiguara, is described to acommodate the species from the Potiguar Basin (northeast Brazil) originally described as Coelodus rosadoi and provisonally placed in the genus Ocloedus. Potiguara clearly belongs to the family Pycnodontidae and can be distinguished from Ocloedus by the absence of spines on the dorsal scales, the number of hypochordal ...

Leprosy or hansen's disease is a spectral disease whose clinical forms mostly depends on host's immune and genetic factors. Different Toll-like receptors (TLR) variants have been described associated with leprosy, but with some lack of replication across different populations. To evaluate the role of polymorphisms in genes TLR1, TLR2 and TLR4 and susceptibility to leprosy in a genetic case control study; to verify the association between genotypes of these markers and the immunological profile in ...

Evidence suggests a common association between eating disorders (EDs) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The present study aimed to investigate the potential risk factors for NSSI among ED patients. We assessed 245 ED patients with the Oxford Risk Factor Interview for ED. The results showed that 33% of ED patients reported NSSI in their lifetime. NSSI appeared to occur more frequently among binge eating/purging type ED patients than among patients with other ED and to be related to a more severe ...

In this study, we investigated factors that influence the differences in exposure of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from eight species of Antarctic seabirds, including Pygoscelis penguins, Stercorarius maccormicki, and Macronectes giganteus. We analyzed the relationship between foraging ecology (based on δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S values) and PFAAs accumulated in eggs and breast feathers. Ten out of 15 targeted PFAAs were detected in eggs compared to eight in feathers. Mean ∑PFAA concentrations in feathers ...

This paper reviews the available data on brominated flame retardants, the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as well as on the naturally-produced methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) in cetacean tissues around the world. Levels and possible sources of both compound classes are discussed. Odontocete cetaceans accumulate higher PBDE concentrations than mysticete species. PBDE contamination was higher in cetaceans from the Northern hemisphere, whereas MeO-PBDE levels were higher ...

Centrally located liver tumors can be removed by either right or left trisectionectomies. These procedures are technically demanding and remove 60% to 85% of the liver parenchyma, much of which may not be involved with the neoplasm, and are often associated with severe complications, including hepatic failure. 1 Scudamore C.H. The IEA CCS Roadmap highlighted the significance that CCS will play in achieving an atmospheric CO2 stabilization on 450 ppm. In the scenario it is based on, CCS will provide approximately 20% of the total CO2 emissions reductions out to 2050. To achieve this contribution it will require an ambitious CCS growth path with 100 projects needed globally by 2020 and over 3000 by 2050. In both 2020 and 2050 the major developing countries will need to contribute to this deployment. Brazil has a unique ...

Several Passiflora species are known for their sedative and anxiolytic properties. However, the functional properties of Passiflora tenuifila Killip are still unexplored. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phenolic composition and acute toxicity, anxiolytic, sedative, and anticonvulsant effects using in vivo assays. The whole fruit (peel, pulp, and seed) was lyophilized and used for all assays. LC-MS showed 19 phenolic compounds, tentatively identified as flavonoids and phenolic acids. ...

Aerobic exercise training can improve insulin sensitivity in many tissues; however, the relationship among exercise, insulin and cancer cell growth is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that aerobic exercise training begun during adolescence can attenuate Walker 256 tumor growth in adult rats and alter insulin secretion. Osteoclast-like giant cell tumor of the pancreas (OGTP) is an unusual entity originally described by Rosai (1) in 1968, characterized by osteoclast-like giant cells and mononuclear stromal cells identical to those seen in bone giant cell tumors. Since then, there have been only a few reports of tumors containing giant cells in other anatomic locations (2). OGTP can be distinguished from pleomorphic giant cell tumor of the pancreas (PGTP), because of the lack of marked nuclear pleomorphism associated ...

Right superior liver resection or bisegmentectomy 7-8 is defined as the anatomical removal of segments 7 and 8 of the liver. According to recent reports, this type of resection requires the presence of a large accessory right inferior hepatic vein to drain the remaining segment 6. However, anatomic studies have shown that segment 6 has multiple veins presenting several anastomosis with the surrounding hepatic veins. Therefore, the maintenance of the veins from segment 5 that ultimately drain into ...

Leishmaniasis is a group of infectious-parasitic diseases with high mortality rates, and endemic in many regions of the globe. The currently available drugs present serious problems such as high toxicity, costs, and the emergence of drug resistance. This has stimulated research into new antileishmania drugs based on natural products and their derivatives. β-Ocimene is a monoterpene found naturally in the essential oils of many plant species which presents antileishmanial activity, and which has ...

The influence of the chemical modification on the thermooxidative degradation was assessed by oxygen uptake, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy, DSC and viscometry. The oxidation rate, yellowing and formation of oxidation products were accelerated in MPS. The Tg values for undegraded PS and MPS were very similar, suggesting ...

The charge distributions in BN cones are analyzed and compared with a planar BN sheet and BN nanotubes.
