Symptomatic involvement of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract as a prominent symptom in Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is uncommon, occurring in less than 1 to 5% of all cases, even when the disease is in its disseminated form. Up to now, there have been reports of 18 cases of LCH with GI manifestations, including our 2 cases, with diarrhea (77.7%), protein-losing enteropathy (33.3%) and bloody stool being the most frequent findings. The authors present two patients with severe diarrhea and refractory ...

Dental management of patients with epi-dermolysis bullosa (EB) is challenging because of the severe soft tissue lesions associated with this disease. A case history is presented where two immediate endosseous implants were placed in the mandible of a patient with recessive dystrophic EB using computer-aided technology to plan the surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation. After a 24-month follow-up, the prosthesis was stable with healthy asymptomatic soft tissue around the implants. The stereolithographic ...

This study assessed the reaction of dry bean and snap bean cultivars to infection by Meloidogyne incognita (races 1, 3) and by Meloidogyne javanica , two species of root-knot nematodes. Three independent experiments were done, one for each species or race of Meloidogyne , using randomized complete block designs with four replications (plots) and four plants per plot. A plot with the susceptible tomato cultivar Santa Clara was used in each block to determine the efficiency of the inoculum and to calculate ...

In a pilot study, the authors aimed to determine the success rate of dental implants placed in patients who were positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and were receiving different regimens of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). They considered patients' levels of cluster of differentiation (CD) 4(+) cells and viral load, and they attempted to verify whether patients with baseline biochemical signs of bone mineral density loss could experience osseointegration impairment. One of ...

Thrombin was first described as an aneurysmal occlusion agent in 1986. Since that time its therapeutic potential has been increasingly recognized. Percutaneous injection of thrombin has been reported as effective in the management of femoral pseudoaneurysms [1] [2]. We present a case of pancreatic pseudoaneurysm of the splenic artery, which was successfully treated using a new approach that consisted of thrombin injection under endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guidance.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography is highly accurate in diagnosing choledocholithiasis, but it is the most invasive of the available methods. Endoscopic ultrasonography is a very accurate test for the diagnosis of choledocholithiasis with a risk of complications similar to that of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. AIM: To compare the accuracy of endoscopic ultrassonography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography in the diagnosis of common bile duct stones before laparoscopic cholecystectomy ...

The aim of the prospective clinical study presented here is to test the effectiveness of a multimode approach consisting of argon plasma coagulation combined with laparoscopic fundoplication in the management of Barrett's esophagus. Argon plasma coagulation was performed in 19 patients with Barrett's esophagus who had previously undergone surgical antireflux treatment. The mean follow-up time was 17 months, ranging between 6 and 27 months. Squamous epithelium was completely restored in all patients. ...

Background and Study Aims: Despite the recognized efficacy of sclerotherapy and elastic band ligation in controlling variceal hemorrhage, the results of endoscopic treatment in Child-Pugh class C patients remain poor. The aim of this prospective, controlled, and randomized study was to compare conventional sclerotherapy with injection of the tissue adhesive N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate in controlling the first episode of rupturing of esophageal varices.

Abstract Background The leaves and the fruits from Syzygium jambolanum DC.(Myrtaceae), a plant known in Brazil as sweet olive or 'jambolão', have been used by native people to treat infectious diseases, diabetes, and stomachache. Since the bactericidal activity of S. jambolanum has been confirmed in vitro , the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the prophylactic treatment with S. jambolanum on the in vivo polymicrobial infection induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in mice. Bananas fruits are widely consumed in the world. In Brazil, the role of agriculture activities in the economy and society is huge, especially for banana farmers. The most popular variety of bananas in Brazil are Prata, Grand Naine, Williams and Nanicão; however, all of them have at least one undesirable trait such as height, yield, vegetative cycle, pests and diseases tolerances, drought or cold resistance and fruit quality. This literature review aims to evaluate agronomic performance and fruit ...

Abstract We report the case of a 3‐year‐old girl with stage I Wilms' tumor of favorable histology. During the course of chemotherapy 5 months post‐diagnosis, an abdominal ultra‐sonogram revealed hypoechoic areas consistent with hepatic tumor recurrence. A liver biopsy performed to rule out recurrence of the malignancy was suggestive of toxocariasis and the diagnosis was confirmed by serologic testing. Although the patient had few classic signs of visceral larva migrans, her eosinophilia and family ...

Despite an increasing body of knowledge concerning gender and lifestyle factors as determinants of sickness absence in well-developed countries, the relationship between these variables has not been elucidated in emerging economic power countries, where the burden of non-communicable diseases is particularly high. This study aimed to analyze the relationships among lifestyle-related factors and sick leave and to examine whether gender differences in sickness absence can be explained by differences ...

The authors report the case of a 4-year-old boy with a diagnosis of stage IV neuroblastoma (NB), who had been treated with 6 cycles of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, cisplatin, and etoposide for 12 months. The patient reached partial remission and presented a diagnosis of acute myelomonocytic leukemia (M4 AML), confirmed by immunophenotyping. After 2 months of therapy for leukemia, the child died with both malignancies in activity. A necropsy histologically confirmed the simultaneity of the two diseases. ...

An increased risk of early pregnancy loss in women briefly exposed to high levels of ambient particulate matter during the preconceptional period was recently observed. The effects of this exposure on early embryo development are unknown. This study was designed to assess the dose-response and biological effects of diesel exhaust particles (DEP) on in vitro embryo development using the in vitro fertilization (IVF) mouse model. Zygotes obtained from superovulated mice after IVF were randomly cultured ...
