Steel slag (SS) is a secondary material from the production of steelmaking with little commercial value. It has several possible applications as raw material for different industrial process. However, small amounts are reused in some countries, where this material continues to be a burden to the steel industry. This paper presents the recent advances in the utilisation of SS in activities other than steelmaking. The main focus is the potential use of SS as binder and aggregates in cement-based materials, ...

Alkali-activated materials (AAM) have been widely promoted as potential repair material for Portland-cement concrete (PCC). However, a thorough evaluation of compatibility and adhesion of AAM to PCC substrates and the correlation of these properties to the AAM composition is still required. AAMs obtained from metakaolin (MK) partially substituted (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 wt%) with blast furnace slag (BFS) and their mechanical compatibility with a representative PCC substrate was investigated. Mortars with ...

The search for new antiobesogenic agents is increasing because of the current obesity pandemic. Capsaicin (Caps), an exogenous agonist of the vanilloid receptor of transient potential type 1 (TRPV1), has shown promising results in the treatment of obesity. This scoping review aims to verify the pathways mediating the effects of Caps in obesity and the different methods adopted to identify these pathways. The search was carried out using data from the EMBASE, MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, and SCOPUS ...

Objective: Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide, and diabetic retinopathy, the main cause of blindness in economically active populations, share clinical risk factors and pathophysiological features. The aim of this study is to examine the association between diabetic retinopathy, cardiovascular disease, and common risk factors in patients with type 1 diabetes. Design and Methods: This nested case-control study was performed in patients from the Brazilian Type 1 Diabetes ...

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in economically active populations. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence and to identify risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 1 diabetes in Brazil. This was a nationwide, cross-sectional study conducted between August 2010 and August 2014. The study included 1760 patients with type 1 diabetes. Patients underwent a standard questionnaire, clinical and laboratory analyses and were screened for diabetic ...

The aim of this study was to verify the association between sleep bruxism (SB) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a sample of 14 TMD patients and 12 healthy control subjects. All participants were evaluated using a clinical questionnaire, visual analog scale (VAS) for TMJ/muscle palpation, and by functional examination. The experimental group was divided into three TMD subgroups: joint sounds and pain, muscular tenderness, and mixed diagnosis. All participants underwent polysomnographic recording ( ...

Wire-mesh sensors are used to determine the phase fraction of gas⁻liquid two-phase flow in many industrial applications. In this paper, we report the use of the sensor to study the flow behavior inside an offshore oil and gas industry device for subsea phase separation. The study focused on the behavior of gas⁻liquid slug flow inside a flow distribution device with four outlets, which is part of the subsea phase separator system. The void fraction profile and the flow symmetry across the outlets ...

Records from 119 patients treated for mandibular fractures between January 2006 and December 2011 were analyzed. We find mandibular fractures mostly affect Caucasian (72.2%) men (80.7%). The mean age of the patients was 28.1 years. Road traffic accidents (RTA) caused the most fractures (49.5%), followed by physical violence, ...

Thoraco-omphalopagus asymmetric conjoined twinning is a rare condition in which a grossly defective foetus (the parasite) is attached to the thorax and upper abdomen of the main foetus (the autosite). We describe a case of thoraco-omphalopagus asymmetric conjoined twins in which the autosite had an associated large-diameter omphalocoele that was successfully separated at our institution. Reconstruction of the resulting abdominal-wall defect was performed using a flap from the gluteal region and the ...

Caffeine is the psychostimulant most consumed worldwide. In moderate doses, it affords a beneficial effect in adults and upon aging, but has a deleterious effect during brain development. We now tested if caffeine consumption by rats (0.1, 0.3, 1.0 g/L in the drinking water, only during active cycle and weekdays) during adulthood could revert the potentially negative effects of caffeine during early life. Thus, we compared caffeine intake starting 15 days before mating and lasting either up to weaning ( ...

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) crops provide carbon (C) for soil through straw and root system decomposition. Recently, however, sugarcane producers are considering straw to be removed for electricity or second generation ethanol production. To elucidate the role of straw and root system on the carbon supply into the soil, the biomass inputs from sugarcane straw (tops and dry leaves) and from root system (rhizomes and roots) were quantified, and its contribution to provide C to the soil was estimated. Three ...

Background and Purpose Caffeine (a non‐selective adenosine receptor antagonist) prevents memory deficits in aging and A lzheimer's disease, an effect mimicked by adenosine A 2 A receptor, but not A 1 receptor, antagonists. Hence, we investigated the effects of adenosine receptor agonists and antagonists on memory performance and scopolamine‐induced memory impairment in mice. Experimental Approach We determined whether A 2 A receptors are necessary for the emergence of memory impairments induced by ...

Nowadays, there is a tendency to individualize the screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR), based on clinical data such as glycated haemoglobin and duration of diabetes (DCCT/EDIC 2017). These methods allow the identification of patients that require referral to a specialist. Currently, in the epidemiological literature, DR has also been graded as referable and nonreferable (Abràmoff et al. 2013). This letter reports a multicentre, nationwide study, conducted in Brazil, a country with a highly admixed ...

Leaf-cutter ants cultivate and feed on the mutualistic fungus, Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, which is threatened by parasitic fungi of the genus Escovopsis. The mechanism of Escovopsis parasitism is poorly understood. Here, we assessed the nature of the antagonism of different Escovopsis species against its host. We also evaluated the potential antagonism of Escovopsioides, a recently described fungal genus from the attine ant environment whose role in the colonies of these insects is unknown. We ...
