Abstract Tumors of the foot and ankle are rare, and the particular clinicopathologic features, therapeutic approach, and outcomes in this setting are not well established. From January 2000 to December 2010, 72 patients with primary musculoskeletal tumors of the foot and ankle, both benign and malignant, were treated at a single institution. Of the 72 patients, 56% were female. The median age was 52 years. Of the 72 tumors, 62 (86.11%) were located in the foot and 10 were located in the ankle; 63 (87.5%) ...

The present paper proposes a micro-econometric methodology for the economic valuation of the impact of ecosystem services in selected economic sectors. In the context of natural capital and ecosystem accounting, we built a four steps valuation protocol. The methodology is applied to the valuation of freshwater in the Ankeniheny-Zahamena Forestry Corridor (CAZ), Madagascar – a country partner with the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES). Our results corroborate the intuition ...

Background: Intestinal barrier disruption followed by bacterial translocation seems to play a role in secondary pancreatic infection in acute pancreatitis. The use of probiotics as a possible adjuvant strategy in the treatment of acute pancreatitis needs to be investigated. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with a prophylactically administered multispecies probiotic mixture on the markers of acute pancreatitis and on the occurrence of bacterial ...

Abstract Objectives To identify the accuracy of enhancement filters of an intraoral phosphor‐plate system for measuring the simulated peri‐implant bone level. Materials and methods A total of 20 titanium implants ( T itamax ® ) were placed into six fragments of bovine ribs and defects simulating bone loss were created. Periapical radiographs were taken with a phosphor‐plate system ( V ista S can ® ) according to the paralleling standard technique, and nine enhancement filters were applied: fine, caries 1, caries ...

Although there has been an improvement in the diagnosis of chronic Chagas' disease, the low sensitivity of indirect parasitological tests is a drawback to its application in diagnosis and post-therapeutic control. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has limited use in routine diagnosis due to the need of specific laboratory facilities, common DNA cross-contamination, and high costs. At the same time, the high variability of PCR results found in different regions of Brazil raises some questions concerning ...

This study presents evaluation of noise levels in urban buses. Noise exposure was evaluated in 80 buses of four models. Differences were found in noise among various bus models and among buses with different engine configurations. No strong correlations were found in year of fabrication and LA eq . ANOVA and Tukey’s test characterized conventional buses as noisiest buses and speedy buses as lowest noise inducing buses.

CARD15 mutations alter bowel immunity and increase susceptibility to Crohn′s disease (CD). However, the relation between these mutations and Crohn′s perianal fistulas has not been fully clarified. To assess whether CARD15 mutations are associated with risk of developing Crohn's perianal fistulas and whether these mutations are predictors of the response of perianal fistulas to antibiotics. CARD15 mutations were investigated in 203 consecutive CD patients. Presence/absence of history of perianal fistula ...

Abstract In this study, we used sequences of two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase I ( COI ) and 16S rRNA , and one nuclear gene, 28S rRNA , to test the monophyly of the sea star genus Echinaster, and understand the phylogenetic relationships among species and subgenera within this genus. Phylogenetic analyses based on Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods revealed three clades with high values of genetic divergence among them (K2P distances for COI over 23%). One of the clades grouped ...

Failure to ovulate is a major cause of infertility. The critical pathway that induces ovulation involves the EGF and MAPK phosphorylation, but studies in rodents have suggested that the Hippo activator, YAP, is also involved. It is unknown whether YAP-dependent transcriptional activity is important for the LH- or EGF-induced ovulatory cascade in monovulatory species such as the cow. Using a well-defined preovulatory GC culture system, we employed pharmacological inhibitors to demonstrate that YAP ...
