Data on species ranges and phylogenetic relationships are key in historical biogeographical inference. In South America, our understanding of the evolutionary processes that underlie biodiversity patterns varies greatly across regions. Little is known, for instance, about the drivers of high endemism in the southern montane region of the Atlantic Rainforest. In this region, former biogeographic connections with other South American ecosystems have been invoked to explain the phylogenetic affinities ...

Limited knowledge about species diversity restricts inferences about biogeography and macroecology in Amazonia, where biodiversity documentation has become particularly pressing due to anthropogenic impacts. An emblematic example of poorly known Amazonian amphibian diversity is that of Allobates nurse frogs, in which species boundaries and ranges are unclear. Based on genetic, morphological and call data from samples collected in 14 poorly known sites in Brazil, we identify and describe a new, broadly ...

Abstract Recent biological discoveries have changed our understanding of the distribution and evolution of neotropical biotas. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the discovery of closely related species isolated on distant mountains has led to the hypothesis that the ancestors of montane species occupied and dispersed through lowland regions during colder periods. This process may explain the distribution of an undescribed Anolis lizard species that we recently discovered at a montane site in the ...

Curcumin, along with its derivatives, form a large class of natural and synthetic compounds with notable biological activity. However, their highly reactive β-diketone moiety renders this type of compounds unstable at pH above 6.5. The substitution of this group for a mono-carbonyl solves this problem, while improving antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. A thiophene curcuminoid, (1E,4E)-1,5-Di(thiophen-2-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DB Thiophene), has been synthesised and its molecular and ...

A large number of infections are caused by multi-resistant bacteria worldwide, increasing to around 700,000 deaths per year. Because of that, many strategies are being developed to combat the resistance of microorganisms to drugs, and recently, chalcones have been studied for this purpose. They are a class of compounds considered an exceptional model ...

In Brazil, malaria is an important public health problem first reported in 1560. Historically, fluctuations in malaria cases in Brazil are attributed to waves of economic development; construction of railroads, highways, and hydroelectric dams; and population displacement and land occupation policies. In this review article, we reviewed the vector control measures established in the Brazilian territory ...
