The use of GaAs FET's under large-signal conditions requires a knowledge of the nonlinear behavior of these devices. A computer program, based on a circuit model with nonlinear elements, has been developed which provides this information. Results from the computer model and examples of its use in microwave circuit design are given.

A novel coupling method is employed in the design of a push-push broad-band dielectric resonator oscillator for K- and Ka-band operation. The oscillators realized with this technique exhibit excellent spectral purity, power output, and suppression of spurious outputs.

Alloy attachment of GaAs monolithic circuits was examined after initial reflow, after environmental bake, and after a stepped series of thermal cycles from 200 to 1000 cycles (-55 to + 125°C). The variety of solders tested included both pastes and preforms. Monolithic assemblies alloyed with these solders were evaluated for changes in physical properties as well as for changes in electrical performance. It was noted during the study that via fractures due to thermal expansion differences between the ...

A variety of microwave double-balanced mixers, using dual-gate FETs or diodes as the mixing nonlinearities, have been fabricated in planar monolithic circuit technology. The mixer topologies, which use active balancing methods, eliminate the need for large suspended substrate structures, thus minimizing circuit area and facilitating integration. These approaches also eliminate IF extraction problems and allow the best performance characteristics of FETs and diodes to be combined. The mixers are ...

In the absence of commercial kits for serological studies specifically for hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection of swine, the capsid protein of a swine genotype 3 HEV was expressed using a recombinant baculovirus. This antigen was used in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of anti-HEV antibodies. Estimation of sensitivity and specificity was carried out in comparison with a commercial serological assay using sera from pigs infected experimentally with HEV genotype 3, negative ...

A simple, automated assembly technique that solves the high VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) and insertion loss problems associated with variable wire inductance in microwave assemblies has been developed. The theory, design, and fabrication of optimum microstrip interconnects from 2 to 20 GHz are discussed. Microstrip interconnects, modeled and measured, are shown to achieve VSWRs of 1:2:1 through 20 GHz, even when several interconnects are cascaded. The technique is tolerant of gap variations ...

Cholesterol lowering therapy markedly reduces the frequency of subsequent cardiovascular events and is associated with a modest degree of angiographic regression of atherosclerotic lesions. There is a strong association between lipids and fibrinogen, plasminogen activator-1, and activated factor VII levels. Low density lipoprotein may be thrombogenic whereas high density lipoprotein protects against thrombosis. Lipoprotein (a) may affect atherosclerosis and thrombosis mainly by binding to fibrin ...

ABSTRACT The hepatitis C virus (HCV) envelope protein E2 has been shown to accumulate in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a properly folded glycoprotein as well as large aggregates of misfolded proteins. In the present study, we have identified an additional unglycosylated species, with an apparent molecular mass of 38 kDa (E2-p38). In contrast to the glycosylated E2, E2-p38 is significantly less stable and is degraded through the proteasome pathway. Correspondingly, E2-p38 is found to ...

A large-signal fully automated load-pull system for characterization of adjacent-channel power for /spl pi//4-DQPSK-based digital wireless communication systems is described. It is demonstrated that the commonly held beliefs that adjacent-channel power for the North American digital system follows a third-order process and that adjacent-channel power for the Japanese digital system follows a fifth-order process are in general not true. Instead, it is shown that adjacent-channel power is a composite ...

Energy needs for portable electronics are rising beyond what batteries can manage, so there is great interest in investigating what fuel cells can bring to this potentially enormous market. This article reports on how Motorola Labs has been developing direct methanol fuel cells in the 100 mWe to 1 We range, for use in portable wireless communications in particular.

A broadband frequency doubler that uses distributed amplifier techniques has been designed to operate over several octaves of bandwidth. The circuit design suppresses the fundamental frequency energy present at the output port while maximizing the second harmonic signal. The design can be realized using monolithic or conventional microwave circuit techniques for use in local oscillator chains. To demonstrate the multiplier concept, a two-cell monolithic circuit was designed. The doubler is composed ...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an emerging virus of medical importance. A majority of HCV infections become chronic and lead to chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HCV usually induces robust immune responses, but it frequently escapes the immune defense to establish persistent infection. The fact that HCV exists as an evolving quasispecies plays an important role in the selection of escape mutants. Furthermore, several viral proteins interfere with cellular functions, in ...

ABSTRACT The hepatitis C virus envelope protein, E2, is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-bound protein that contains a region of sequence homology with the double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase PKR and its substrate, the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2). We previously reported that E2 modulates global translation through inhibition of the interferon-induced antiviral protein PKR through its PKR-eIF2α phosphorylation site homology domain (PePHD). Here we show that the PKR-like ER- ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is responsible for large waterborne epidemics of acute hepatitis in endemic regions and for sporadic autochthonous cases in non endemic regions. Although the water vector has been thoroughly documented in endemic regions, very little is known about the modes of contamination occurring in non endemic regions. Unlike the other hepatitis viruses, HEV has an animal reservoir. Several lines of evidence, such as the results of phylogenic analysis and studies on direct contamination ...
