This work presents an alternative bioenergy-related management approach for sugarcane molasses through the application of anaerobic digestion (AD) in a two-stage continuous thermophilic (55 °C) system to produce biohydrogen (bioH2) and methane. The performance of the acidogenic stage (RH2) was assessed by maintaining a continuous and high organic loading rate (OLR; 120 kg COD m−3 d−1), whilst the robustness of the methanogenic stage (RCH4) was investigated based on the increase of the OLR (1.0–25.2 kg COD ...

Our knowledge of the rhizosphere bacterial communities in deep soils and the role of Eucalyptus and Acacia on the structure of these communities remains very limited. In this study, we targeted the bacterial community along a depth profile (0 to 800 cm) and compared community structure in monospecific or mixed plantations of Acacia mangium and Eucalyptus grandis. We applied quantitative PCR (qPCR) and sequence the V6 region of the 16S rRNA gene to characterize composition of bacterial communities. ...

There are lack of studies regarding the effects of microbial diversity on specific soil functions, such as pesticides degradation. This study evaluated the role of bacterial community diversity and biochar on chlorothalonil (CTN) degradation, using 'dilution to extinction' approach, PCR-DGGE/16S rRNA gene technique, and radiorespirometry (14C-CTN). Biochar and microbial community dilution affected structure of the microbial community. In spite of that, CTN mineralization was slow, but dissipation was ...

The native soil microbiota is very important to maintain the quality of that environment, but with the intensive use of agrochemicals, changes in microbial biomass and formation of large quantities of toxic waste were observed in soil, groundwater and surface water. Thereby, the goal of this study was to evaluate if the selective pressure exerted by the presence of the herbicides atrazine, diuron and 2,4-D changes the bacterial community structure of an agricultural soil, using denaturing gradient ...

Abstract It is believed that climate change will influence most of interactions that sustain life on Earth. Among these, the recruitment exerted by plants in their roots vicinity can change, leading to differential assemblages of microbiomes in the rhizosphere. We approached this issue analyzing the variations in the composition of bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of sugarcane cultivated under two concentrations of atmospheric CO 2 (350 or 700 ppm). In addition to the analysis of bacterial ...

The sugar and bioethanol industry generate large amounts of filter cake and vinasse, residues that are applied to sugarcane fields as conditioners and organic fertilizers. However, these may be significant sources of greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere. This study assessed the impact of sugarcane straw biochar on the emissions of CO2, CH4and N2O promoted by filter cake and vinasse applied to soil, and its effects on the chemical properties and bacterial communities of a Typic Hapludox and ...

This study aimed to contribute to the enhancement of the knowledge of levels, trends and behaviour of eight siloxanes (four linear and four cyclic) in the environment. Adding to the prioritised scrutiny of the incidence in the atmosphere through passive samplers (sorbent-impregnated polyurethane foam disks--SIPs), the sampling of pine needles and soil was also performed, thus closing the circle of atmospheric exposure in the areas of study. Two sampling campaigns (one in summer and one in winter) were ...

This work investigated how heat and acid pretreatment affected thermophilic biohydrogen production by a mixed culture present in the sludge of a sugarcane vinasse treatment plant. Heat- (80 °C for 15 min) or acid- (pH 3 for 24 h) treated sludge samples were employed to seed batch bioreactors along 36 days. The heat- and acid-treated sludge samples afforded H2 production rates (HPRs) of 8.4 and 9.5 mmol/L.d, respectively. The lactic acid concentration increased in the bioreactor seeded with heat-treated ...

Plants interact with a myriad of microbial cells in the rhizosphere, an environment that is considered to be important for plant development. However, the differential structuring of rhizosphere microbial communities due to plant cultivation under differential agricultural practices remains to be described for most plant species. Here we describe the rhizosphere microbiome of grapevine cultivated under conventional and organic practices, using a combination of cultivation-independent approaches. ...

To maintain genomic integrity cells have to respond properly to a variety of exogenous and endogenous factors that produce genome injuries and interfere with DNA replication. DNA integrity checkpoints coordinate this response by slowing cell cycle progression to provide time for the cell to repair the damage, stabilizing replication forks and stimulating DNA repair to restore the original DNA sequence and structure. In addition, there are also mechanisms of damage tolerance, such as translesion ...

It is generally accepted that good hydrogenation noble and nonnoble metal catalysts such as Pt, Ru, or Ni are not chemoselective for hydrogenation of nitro groups in substituted aromatic molecules. We have found that it is possible to transform nonchemoselective into highly chemoselective metal catalysts by controlling the coordination of metal surface atoms while introducing a cooperative effect between the metal and a properly selected support. Thus, highly chemoselective and general hydrogenation ...

The unprecedented chemoselective reduction of α,β-unsaturated nitroalkenes to oximes using hydrogen has been achieved with gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2. In contrast to the excellent catalytic performance of gold, related palladium and platinum catalysts are unselective, leading to the reduction of CC double bond as well as the reduction of the NO2 to NH2. The selectivity of Au/TiO2 for the formation of oximes opens the way for the general use of the Henry reaction in organic synthesis.

The selective reduction of a nitro group when other reducible functions are present is a difficult process that often requires stoichiometric amounts of reducing agents or, if H2 is used, the addition of soluble metals. Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2 or Fe2O3 catalyzed the chemoselective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes with H2 under mild reaction conditions that avoided the accumulation of hydroxylamines and their potential exothermic decomposition. These chemoselective hydrogenation ...

Ab initio molecular orbital calculations (HF/6-31G*) are used to obtain thermodynamical information on the possibility to form NH-bridging or NH2-terminal groups in amorphous and crystalline materials containing Si–O–Si and Al–O–P structures, such as for instance, zeolites and aluminophosphates. We have employed dimeric model clusters Si–O–Si and Al–O–P which contain NH2-terminal groups or an oxygen atom substituted by a NH bridging unit. The Bronsted basicity and the softness–hardness of these structures ...

Enhanced oil recovery methods (EOR) are designed to increase reservoir productivity by facilitating oil displacement in the porous media. Due to its physicochemical properties capable of reducing the interfacial tension and inverting rock wettability, microemulsion flooding has been studied as a chemical EOR method. In this work, we studied the injection of polymer, surfactant, and alkali as single microemulsion media. A microemulsion formulation was selected with high water content and a composition ...

Well stimulation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) plays an important role in oil production. Microemulsions and nanoemulsions fluids have been studied as a fluid to enhance the efficiency of these processes. In EOR, the chemical methods act on the alteration of physicochemical rock/fluid properties reducing the residual oil saturation and increasing the displacement of oil in the porous medium. Several authors have investigated the use of acid micro and nanoemulsions as systems of production enhancement. ...
