Compared with the market, value, or size factors, momentum has offered investors the highest Sharpe ratio. However, momentum has also had the worst crashes, making the strategy unappealing to investors who dislike negative skewness and kurtosis. We find that the risk of momentum is highly variable over time and predictable. Managing this risk virtually eliminates crashes and nearly doubles the Sharpe ratio of the momentum strategy. Risk-managed momentum is a much greater puzzle than the original ...

Abstract We test the relevance of technical and fundamental variables in forming currency portfolios. Carry, momentum, and value reversal all contribute to portfolio performance, whereas the real exchange rate and the current account do not. The resulting optimal portfolio produces out-of-sample returns that are not explained by risk and are valuable to diversified investors holding stocks and bonds. Exposure to currencies increases the Sharpe ratio of diversified portfolios by 0.5 on average, while ...

Among the most important tropical fruit grown in the world today and in Brazil, papaya occupies a prominent place. Native to tropical America, papaya has spread to several regions of the world, and Brazil accounts for 12.74% of the world production, followed by Mexico, Nigeria and India. The culture reached a harvested area of 441,042 ha and production of 12,420,585 t worldwide. The largest interest in this fruit relies on its main constituent compounds, like vitamins A, B and C, alkaloids (carpaine ...

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are constitutively expressed in hypothalamic cells. However, phenotypic and functional aspects of these cells remain unknown. We have studied the expression pattern of these two molecules in hypothalamic cells expressing corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and arginin-vasopressin (AVP), two major regulatory peptides in the hypothalamus-pituitary system, using immunofluorescence, intracerebroventricular injection of colchicine, and the study in parallel ...

This study examined the effects of mixed diets (with the crab Callinectes spp. as the main component of the diet) on embryonic development and hatchling quality of Octopus maya. Several O. maya females were fed one of 4 different diets being 1) crab, 2) crab and squid, 3) crab and mussel and 4) crab and fish heads, in a 7:3 ratio. The effects of each diet on the reproductive performance were evaluated by quantifying the total number of eggs female− 1, eggs clutch− 1, hatchlings female− 1, hatchling ...

A polar hypersurface P of a complex analytic hypersurface germ f = 0 can be investigated by analyzing the invariance of certain Newton polyhedra associated with the image of P, with respect to suitable coordinates, by certain morphisms appropriately associated with f. We develop this general principle of Teissier when f = 0 is a quasi-ordinary hyper-surface germ and P is the polar hypersurface associated with any quasi-ordinary projection of f = 0. We show a decomposition of P into bunches of branches ...

The present work quantifies the dependence of the tunable frequency range on the gap spacing between the end of the conical post and the cavity top plate in reentrant 1.0 GHz klystron cavities. Fabricated from aluminum, the cavities tested are 80 mm in diameter with a top plate 1 mm thick. Experiments performed on such cavities have shown tuning coefficients (change in resonant frequency due to variation of the capacitive gap) as high as 40.0 MHz/μm, thereby demonstrating the capability of reentrant ...

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) such as deep learning in the quality control of grains has the potential to assist analysts in decision making and improving procedures. Advanced technologies based on X-ray imaging provide markedly easier ways to control insect infestation of stored products, regardless of whether the quality features are visible on the surface of the grains. Here, we applied contrast enhancement algorithms based on peripheral equalization and calcification emphasis ...

A study of the electrodynamical properties of gyrotron coaxial cavities using a conical inner rod has been conducted and compared with cold-test measurements on TE modes over the frequency range 11-14 GHz. On the basis of a geometrical design criterion for resonance of the normal modes, it has been demonstrated that the mode spectrum associated with a purpose-built test coaxial cavity is significantly less dense than that for the empty cavity without the coaxial insert. >

Let f(x, y) be an irreducible formal power series without constant term, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. One may solve the equation $$f(x,y)=0$$ by choosing either x or y as independent variable, getting two finite sets of Newton–Puiseux series. In 1967 and 1968 respectively, Abhyankar and Zariski published proofs of an inversion theorem, expressing the characteristic exponents of one set of series in terms of those of the other set. In fact, a more general theorem, stated ...

Laboratory and field trials were conducted to determine the effects of temperature, light, photoperiod, water availability and depth of burial in germination and emergence ...
