This work presents results allowing an unequivocal correlation of the observations of strong nonlinear elastic features of ultrasonic waves (values of the nonlinearity parameters exceeding the thresholds corresponding to undamaged states), with the critical events of the corrosion-induced surface cracking of reinforced cement-mortar specimens. These observations point to the possibility of the early detection of cracking using nonlinear ultrasonic (NLU) techniques. Experimental evidence is presented ...

It has been studied the sensitivity of the technique of intermodulation of ultrasonic waves to detect different damage states of concrete due to embedded steel corrosion. Accelerated corrosion tests have been conducted on reinforced cement mortar specimens, while monitoring the appearance and width evolution of visible surface cracks and performing intermodulation measurements. It has been established a statistically acceptable "upper control limit" for the initial (undamaged) Intensity Modulation ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) as sex pheromone of Anocentornitens. Sex pheromones were extracted by submerging 150 females fed for 6 days in hexane (3 ml) for two hours and sonicating them for15 min. The extract was analyzed by GC-MS employing the Single Ion Monitoring (SIM) method. Identification of 2,6-DCP was based on the comparison of mass spectra with a computer search using the NIST library and by matching the mass spectrum of the peak at ...

Phenological models applied to grapevines are valuable tools to assist in the decision of cultural practices related to winegrowers and winemakers. The two-parameter sigmoid phenological model was used to estimate the three main phenological stages of the grapevine development, i.e., budburst, flowering, and veraison. This model was calibrated and validated with phenology data for 51 grapevine varieties distributed in four wine regions in Portugal (Lisboa, Douro, Dão, and Vinhos Verdes). Meteorological ...

Grafting is an intensive commercial practice required to protect the European grapevine against the Phylloxera pest. Rootstocks resistant to this pest are hybrids of American vine species with different levels of compatibility with European Vitis vinifera varieties. Aiming to understand what drives grafting compatibility in grapevine, a transcriptomic approach was used to search for master regulators of graft success. Two scion/rootstock combinations, with different levels of compatibility, were ...

Anthocyanin content is a trait of major interest in Vitis vinifera L. These compounds affect grape and wine quality, and have beneficial effects on human health. A candidate-gene approach was used to identify genetic variants associated with anthocyanin content in grape berries. A total of 445 polymorphisms were identified in 5 genes encoding transcription factors and 10 genes involved in either the biosynthetic pathway or transport of anthocyanins. A total of 124 SNPs were selected to examine association ...

Abstract The temperature dependence of the vibrational modes of lead barium niobate (Pb x Ba 1– x Nb 2 O 6 ), which belongs to the tungsten‐bronze family of oxygen octahedra ferroelectrics, were investigated for the first time using the Raman scattering technique. The investigated sample ( x = 0.60) exhibits a ferro–paraelectric phase transition in the measured temperature range. Clear evidence of the structural transformation was observed in the temperature dependence of the phonon energy as well as in ...

The polarization switching process is certainly the most important feature of ferroelectric materials from fundamental as well as practical points of view. In this paper, a one-dimensional lattice model is presented in order to describe the polarization switching process in ferroelectric materials, incorporating the contribution of both dipolar defects and depolarizing fields to the domain reorientation. The influence of the interaction strength between switchable dipoles and dipolar defects, the ...

Haemangiomas are common focal liver lesions, generally detected in the work-up of asymptomatic patients. From the pathological point of view, they can be classified as small (capillary) or large, with cavernous vascular spaces that may show thrombosis, calcifications and hyalinisation. The polymorphic imaging appearance of haemangiomas depends on their histological features and flow pattern. The widespread use of cross-sectional imaging has allowed an increased detection rate and a better characterisation ...

BACKGROUND: Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) strategies can reduce ICU length of stay and optimize recovery in critically ill patients. Our objective was to compare IMT combined with spontaneous breathing with T-piece in tracheostomized subjects. METHODS: Tracheostomized critically ill subjects who were ready to wean were selected and randomly allocated to one of 2 groups: electronically-assisted IMT (EIMT) or spontaneous breathing with T-piece. Electronically assisted IMT was delivered using 30% of maximal ...

CVd-V found in six sweet orange sources from the Sultanate of Oman was identical to the reference CVd-V variant, whereas three new variants with sequence identities of 98.6% (CVd-V CA ), 97.3% (CVd-V ST ), and 94.9% ( ...

Portugal is very rich in grapevine biodiversity but nowadays only a small number of cultivars (13 black and 3 white) with defined enological characteristics are being used. However, there are still 51 cultivars with significant expression in the country which have a great potential to be used in the establishment of new vineyards. Considering the importance of identifying and understanding the genetic relatedness of the main cultivars used for wine making in Portugal, those cultivars were genotyped ...

The nonlinear dependence of the dielectric permittivity on electric field e (E) is modeled by the relationship e(E) = e00 + 1/(α + β Eeff 2 ), where Eeff = E + κ P(E). Using an appropriate mathematical representation of the polarization loop P(E), it is possible to describe correctly the hysteretic behavior of the curve e(E). This model allows the separation of the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the dielectric response from the experimental measurement of e(E). The model is validated for PZT and PLZT ...

The mechanisms involved in the polarization switching process in soft and hard Pb(Zr53,Ti47)O3 (PZT) bulk ceramics were investigated through the dependency of the hysteresis loop on the frequency. In order to determine the influence of the defects on the domain switching dynamics, the samples were characterized in the virgin state and after a fatigue or a depinning process. The frequency dependence of the polarization revealed a strong relaxation of the 90° domain walls at ∼100 Hz. The results also ...
