Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been intensively investigated as a non-pharmacological treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). While many studies have examined the genetic predictors of antidepressant medications, this issue remains to be investigated for tDCS. In the current study, we evaluated whether the BDNF Val66Met and the 5-HTT (5-HTTLPR) polymorphisms were associated with tDCS antidepressant response. We used data from a factorial trial that evaluated the efficacy ...

The results have recently been reported of a preliminary study into the base catalysed hydrolysis of methyl paraben as a test and reference reaction for flow-through microcalorimeters. The values quoted for the rate constant and the molar enthalpy change are (3.15±0.11)×10−4 s−1 and −50.5±4.3 kJ mol−1, respectively. The present paper explains the results of further studies of the methyl paraben reaction and also describes some practical and theoretical considerations of flow microcalorimetric experiments. ...

Activation of the renal D 1 R (dopamine D 1 -like receptor) or AT 2 R (angiotensin II type-2 receptor), individually or both, simultaneously, is necessary in the normal regulation of renal sodium (Na + ) transport and blood pressure. However, little is known regarding the precise mechanism of this interaction. Pharmacological stimulation, membrane biotinylation, and cell surface immunofluorescence were used to study the effect of the D 1 R/AT 2 R interaction in human renal proximal tubule cells. D 1 R activation ...

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) catalyze the transfer of methyl groups to arginine residues in proteins. PRMT inhibitors are novel, promising drugs against cancer that are currently in clinical trials, which include oral administration of the drugs. However, off-target activities of systemically available PRMT inhibitors have not yet been investigated. In this work, we study the relevance of arginine methylation in platelets and investigate the effect of PRMT inhibitors on platelet function ...

ABSTRACT Introduction : Bipolar disorder is frequently associated with obsessional symptoms. However, no reports have identified a pattern of obsessionality that is associated with a specific mood stabilizer treatment. Methods : A chart review was conducted on five patients with bipolar II disorder who spontaneously reported a form of obsessionality characterized by intrusive, recurrent phrases after taking lamotrigine. Results : Development of the phrases occurred from 7–42 years after mood disorder ...

Peroxisomes play an essential role in cellular lipid metabolism as exemplified by the existence of a number of genetic diseases in humans caused by the impaired function of one of the peroxisomal enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. Key pathways in which peroxisomes are involved include: (1.) fatty acid beta-oxidation; (2.) etherphospholipid biosynthesis, and (3.) fatty acid alpha-oxidation. In this paper we will describe these different pathways in some detail and will provide an overview of peroxisomal ...

There is growing evidence that atypical antipsychotics may be effective in the treatment of acute bipolar depression. Results from randomized, placebo-controlled trials support the use of quetiapine monotherapy and a combination of olanzapine–fluoxetine in the depressed phase of bipolar disorder, while only limited data exists regarding the use of aripiprazole in this population. To assess the potential effectiveness of aripiprazole in treating acute bipolar depression, a chart review was conducted ...

Sadness is typically characterized by raised inner eyebrows, lowered corners of the mouth, reduced walking speed, and slumped posture. Ancient subcortical circuitry provides a neuroanatomical foundation, extending from dorsal periaqueductal grey to subgenual anterior cingulate, the latter of which is now a treatment target in disorders of sadness. Electrophysiological studies further emphasize a role for reduced left relative to right frontal asymmetry in sadness, underpinning interest in the transcranial ...

The electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBCe2) is encoded by SLC4A5, variants of which have been associated with salt sensitivity of blood pressure, which affects 25% of the adult population. NBCe2 is thought to mediate sodium bicarbonate cotransport primarily in the renal collecting duct, but NBCe2 mRNA is also found in the rodent renal proximal tubule (RPT). The protein expression or function of NBCe2 has not been demonstrated in the human RPT. We validated an NBCe2 antibody by shRNA ...

Cardiomyocyte apoptosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of heart failure (HF). This study was performed in patients with left ventricular (LV) volume overload at different stages in the development of HF to correlate apoptotic gene expression with LV echocardiographic phenotype. LV biopsies were procured from 24 cardiac surgical patients selected from 4 distinct clinical groups (n = 6) in the progression from preserved LV function to HF. Group I consisted of control patients with normal LV function ( ...

Colloidal quantum dot solar cells achieve spectrally selective optical absorption in a thin layer of solution-processed, size-effect tuned, nanoparticles. The best devices built to date have relied heavily on drift-based transport due to the action of an electric field in a depletion region that extends throughout the thickness of the quantum dot layer. Here we study for the first time the behaviour of the best-performing class of colloidal quantum dot films in the absence of an electric field, ...

Rationale Salt sensitivity of blood pressure affects >30% of the hypertensive and >15% of the normotensive population. Variants of the electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe2 gene, SLC4A5, are associated with increased blood pressure in several ethnic groups. SLC4A5 variants are also highly associated with salt sensitivity, independent of hypertension. However, little is known about how NBCe2 contributes to salt sensitivity, although NBCe2 regulates renal tubular sodium bicarbonate transport. ...

Abstract. Hypoxia has become a world-wide phenomenon in the global coastal ocean and causes a deterioration of the structure and function of ecosystems. Based on the collective contributions of members of SCOR Working Group #128, the present study provides an overview of the major aspects of coastal hypoxia in different biogeochemical provinces, including estuaries, coastal waters, upwelling areas, fjords and semi-enclosed basins, with various external forcings, ecosystem responses, feedbacks and ...

Handedness has been extensively studied because of its relationship with language and the over-representation of left-handers in some neurodevelopmental disorders. Using data from the UK Biobank, 23andMe and the International Handedness Consortium, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of handedness (N = 1,766,671). We found 41 loci associated (P < 5 × 10−8) with left-handedness and 7 associated with ambidexterity. Tissue-enrichment analysis implicated the CNS in the aetiology of handedness. ...

A systematic characterization of the spatio-temporal gene expression during human neurodevelopment is essential to understand brain function in both physiological and pathological conditions. In recent years, stem cell technology has provided an in vitro tool to recapitulate human development, permitting also the generation of human models for many diseases. The correct differentiation of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) into specific cell types should be evaluated by comparison with specific cells/ ...

Abstract Recent studies of the Uruguayan population revealed different amounts of Amerindian and African genetic contributions. Our previous analysis of Afro‐Uruguayans from the capital city of the Department of Cerro Largo showed a high proportion of African genes, and the effects of directional mating involving Amerindian women. In this paper, we extended the analysis to a sample of more than 100 individuals representing a random sample of the population of the whole Department. Based on 18 autosomal ...
