A new theory for describing plastic deformation in metals is presented. The approach focuses on obtaining an expression for the dislocation recovery term in terms of the energy barrier for dislocation annihilation, 〈ΔG〉. This term is obtained from the contributions of dislocation formation and migration, the statistical entropy inherent to the annihilation process, and the chemical work due to the presence of vacancies. It is shown that at high temperatures, vacancy migration features strongly in ...

Expressions for obtaining the dislocation cell size and misorientation angle evolution as functions of strain, strain rate and temperature are presented. The basis of the theory is to express the cell formation energy as a set of dislocation partials, which is equated to the energy of the dislocation forest in the non-cellular material plus the dislocation slip energy to form cellular structures. The latter is expressed in terms of the statistical entropy for dislocation slip. The Young–Laplace ...

A recently developed model for describing plasticity in FCC metals (E.I., Galindo-Nava, P.E.J., Rivera-Díaz-del-Castillo, Mater. Sci. Eng. A 543 (2012) 110–116; E.I. Galindo-Nava, P.E.J. Rivera-Díaz-del-Castillo, Acta Mater. 60 (2012) 4370–4378) has now been applied to BCC. The core of the theory is the thermostatistical description of dislocation annihilation paths, which determines the dynamic recovery rate of the material. Input to this is the energy for the formation, migration and ordering of ...

Taking the Hall–Petch relationship as a starting point, the factors contributing towards Mg alloy strengthening are analysed, and their relative importance quantified. Solid-solution strengthening is modelled employing a power-law approach. The effects of various processing schedules are reviewed, showing that these play a relatively minor role. Grain refinement effects are described employing thermodynamic and kinetic formulations via the interdependence theory approach. The effects of rare earths ...

Metals and alloys have been indispensable for technological progress, but only a fraction of the possible ternary systems (combinations of three elements) is known. Statistical inference methods combined with physical models are presented to discover new systems of enhanced properties. It is demonstrated that properties originating from atomic-level interactions can be described employing a linear regression analysis, but properties incorporating microstructural and thermal history effects require ...

A novel thermostatistical approach to describe hot deformation of unary and multicomponent FCC alloys undergoing dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is presented. The approach incorporates an additional softening effect to the Kocks–Mecking equation, which becomes active once a critical incubation strain for recrystallization is achieved. Multicomponent effects are incorporated into the equation to account for solid solution strengthening and recrystallization effects. The dislocation density evolution ...

Deformation twinning in HCP metals is described by a novel thermostatistical approach. Thermodynamic descriptions for the critical conditions for twin nucleation and growth are derived. These are obtained by accounting for the competition between the strain energy in the material from local stress concentrations and dislocation slip. Central to this theory is the introduction of a statistical entropy term that accounts for the energetically favourable dislocation migration paths, which determine ...

Grain size behaviour during discontinuous dynamic recrystallization in alloys is characterized by a theoretical approach that combines a novel thermostatistics framework, with classical grain nucleation and growth formulations. Configurational effects from dislocation migration paths control microstructure variation via an entropic effect. An alternative approach for accounting for solute–drag effects is proposed. It is shown that the drag atmosphere linearly amounts to the atomic radius of solute ...

A unified description for the hardness in martensitic steels for a wide range of carbon contents is presented. It is based on describing the strength contributions of lath and plate martensite, precipitates and retained austenite. Descriptions of the dislocation density in both martensitic structures are obtained in terms of carbon content and tempering conditions. It is shown that a peak in hardness usually observed for carbon contents ranging 0.6–1 wt% is a result of a compromise between the strength ...

The synthesis, thermal, dielectric and conductivity properties of functionalized chitosan polymer derivatives are evaluated to determine their potential uses as a nontoxic electrolyte/separator for lithium batteries. Deacetylated chitosan (DAC) at 97% is used as a precursor to prepare two derivatives: N-propylsulfonic acid chitosan (SC), chitosan with zwitterionic pendant groups (ZWC). These derivatives increase the polar character of pure chitosan, and significantly improve its solubility. Likewise, ...

A new model describing the microstructure and strength of lath martensite is introduced. The packet and block size were found to linearly depend on the prior-austenite grain size when introducing relevant crystallographic and geometric relationships of their hierarchical arrangements. A mechanism for the lath boundary arrangement within a block is postulated to ensure complete carbon redistribution to the lath boundaries. Accordingly, the dislocation density is obtained by considering the lattice ...

Deforming nickel base superalloys under the γ′ solvus retards dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) by hampering grain boundary motion; this is an efficient way of refining grain size during forging and other hot working processes. A previously proposed model for describing the kinetics of DRX in nickel alloys is here further developed to account for the influence of γ′ intermetallics, allowing predicting microstructural evolution during subsolvus deformation. The model incorporates alloy composition and ...

A unified description for the evolution of ε– and α′– martensite, and twinning in austenitic steels is presented. The formation of micron—scale ε and twin bands is obtained by considering the evolution of hierarchically arranged nano–sized ε and twins (embryos). The critical size and applied stress when these structures form is obtained by minimising their free energy of formation. The difference between forming an ε plate or a twin lies in the number of overlapping stacking faults in their structure. ...

The nucleation and growth of lenticular carbides (LCs) in bearing steels occur near to deformed ferrite bands after exposure to prolonged rolling contact fatigue (RCF). Since the first observations in 1947, a large number of attempts have been made to explain the formation mechanisms of such stress-induced microstructural alterations, but a reliable model was still not available. In this research, a novel theory is proposed to describe the carbon redistribution process during LC formation. The theory ...

Mineral dust represents one of the main components of particulate matter (PM) in the Mediterranean area. The rapid identification of Saharan dust events in PM samples is desirable and required for several reasons, including their role in direct effect on climate by radiative forcing as well as their adverse effects on human health. Bio-liquids upgrading via catalytic hydrotreating represents an alternative route to produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels. In this paper, the upgrading of an olive oil production-derived by-product has been conducted in a down-flow fixed-bed reactor at 250 °C, 3 MPa with sulfided CoMo catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by successive impregnation (with Mo being introduced first) and supported on different mesoporous silicates (DMS-1, SBA-15, SBA-16, HMS) with the aim to study the effect of support morphology ...
