Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a preventable cause of visual disability. The aims of the present study were to investigate levels and behavior oxidative stress markers and mitochondrial function in non-proliferative DR (NPDR) and to establish the correlation between the severity of NPDR and markers of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function. In a transverse analysis, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with mild, moderate and severe non-proliferative DR (NPDR) were evaluated for markers of oxidative ...

ABSTRACT Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the causal agent of both KS and primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). Although treatment with paclitaxel has significant antitumor activity in KS, drug resistance represents a major obstacle for improving the overall response and survival of PEL patients. The transcriptional pattern of KSHV is cell/tissue specific, as revealed by the fact that the viral latent protein LANA2 is detected exclusively in B cells. This paper focuses on the mechanism ...

We report the case of a 74-year-old white male patient who had worn an overdenture for the previous 6 years, retained by 4 screwed implants and a bar, who presented with an exophytic multilobed lesion of 2.5 × 2.0 cm on the anterior aspect of 1 implant neck, which was surrounded by pink-reddish tissue. All of the soft tissue around the implant was removed until the periosteum was reached. Histologic examination of the lamina propria revealed a cellular proliferation with imprecise boundaries, dense ...

Abstract Objectives Our objectives were to examine vascular and cellular colonization in anorganic bovine bone ( ABB ) after 6 months of healing in human maxillary sinus augmentation grafts. Material and methods Fifty unilateral maxillary sinus augmentation procedures were performed on 50 consecutive patients. Bone cores were obtained through the implant receptor sites 6 months later and evaluated with morphological image analysis and immunohistochemical techniques. Results Image analysis revealed a ...

ABSTRACT Purpose: Different biomaterials have been suggested for guided bone regeneration (GBR). These might show the ideal properties to let a new bone formation in the grafted area. Among these ideal features, it is essential their controlled resorption in order to be replaced for new vital bone. Bovine bone has been used widely as a good biomaterial for GBR, however there is still an interesting controversy about its resorbable capacity. In this sense, the objective of this study was to examine ...

Because of the previous controversial findings in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), we measured bone-mineral density (BMD) by two different methods, studied biochemical markers of bone remodeling and calciotropic hormones (parathyroid hormone and calcitonin) in women with NIDDM, and compared the results with age-matched controls. Forty-seven women with NIDDM and 252 healthy nondiabetic women as controls were recruited for this study. BMD was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) ...

Purpose Drawing on the theories of servant leadership and upper echelons, this paper aims to highlight the mechanisms through which CEO servant leadership enhances firm innovativeness in hotels. This study aims to test a multiple mediation model by considering the mediating role of encouragement of participation (EoPART) – a high-performance human resources (HR) practice – and employees’ voice (EVOICE) in sequence. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from HR managers of 34 hotels in the hospitality ...

In multi-label classification the goal is to assign an instance to a set of different classes. This task is normally addressed either by defining a compound class variable with all the possible combinations of labels (label power-set methods) or by building independent classifiers for each class (binary relevance methods). The first approach suffers from high computationally complexity, while the second approach ignores possible dependencies among classes. Chain classifiers have been recently proposed ...

Fish and shellfish are an important source not only of toxic heavy metals, but also of essential elements in the diet. In this study, levels of Cu, Mn, Se and Zn have been determined in fresh, canned and frozen fish and shellfish products. A total of 485 samples of the 43 most frequently consumed fish and shellfish species in Andalusia (Southern Spain) were analyzed for essential elements content. The potential human health risks for the consumers and the nutritional value of the products analyzed ...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used because of their antimicrobial properties. However, several reports suggest that AgNPs exposure promote cardiac effects that involve nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative stress (OS). Nevertheless, there are no studies related to AgNPs-induced effects in cardiac physiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the AgNPs direct actions on coronary vascular tone and cardiac contractility using Langendorff rat heart preparation. Low concentrations of AgNPs ( ...

Videogames developed in the 1970s and 1980s were modest programs created in a couple of months by a single person, who played the roles of designer, artist and programmer. Since then, videogames have evolved to become a multi-million dollar industry. Today, AAA game development involves hundreds of people working together over several years. Management and engineering requirements have changed at the same pace. Although many of the processes have been adapted over time, this is not quite true for ...

The effects of pure ethanol and some alcoholic beverages on acid secretion and metabolism were examined in the isolated toad gastric mucosa. Pure ethanol applied to the luminal side or to the submucosal side at low concentrations (2%-10%) was a potent stimulant of acid secretion, whereas high concentrations (greater than or equal to 20%) were inhibitory. Cimetidine and calcium-free solutions did not abolish the secretory effect of ethanol. Beer and wine, but not rum and whisky, caused a significant ...
