In the frame of the ENRESA natural analogue programme, the uranium ore from the "Mina Fe" (Salamanca, Spain) has been studied as a natural analogue of radioactive spent fuel behaviour. This uranium mine is hosted in highly fractured schistose rocks, a geological setting that has not been envisaged in the Spanish options for radioactive waste burial. However, some analogies with the processes that might be involved in the evolution of these geological repositories suggested this investigation. The ...

Fractures of the proximal femur are, more than ever, an important challenge in the field of traumatology. The Gamma nail, a combination of advantages of the sliding screw with the intramedullary nail, represents an efficient technique in the management of these fractures. A series of 224 fractures of the proximal femur in which this nail was used is reported. The average age of the patients was 79.2 years. The mean healing time was 68.2 days in 99.4% of the cases. The incidence of perioperative ...

Abstract Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) is a highly versatile polymer used for water remediation due to its chemical robustness and processability. By incorporating metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) into PVDF‐HFP membranes, the material can gain metal‐adsorption properties. It is well known that the effectiveness of these composites removing heavy metals depends on the MOF's chemical encoding and the extent of encapsulation within the polymer. In this study, it is examined ...

In this letter, an all-electronic method that provides a precise control over the number of spectral lines of an electro-optic frequency comb is presented and experimentally validated. This feature, in conjunction with the straightforward configuration of the optical resolution (repetition frequency) inherent to electro-optic combs, enables the generation of optical comb sources with the unique capability of a complete adaptability to the targeted spectral feature/s that could ultimately maximize ...

Deposition of PrP amyloid in cerebral vessels in conjunction with neurofibrillary lesions is the neuropathologic hallmark of the dementia associated with a stop mutation at codon 145 of PRNP, the gene encoding the prion protein (PrP). In this disorder, the vascular amyloid in tissue sections and the approximately 7.5-kDa fragment extracted from amyloid are labeled by antibodies to epitopes located in the PrP sequence including amino acids 90-147. Amyloid-laden vessels are also labeled by antibodies ...

An improved preparation of mesoionic heterocycles 1,3-diazolium-4-thiolates by [3 + 2] cycloadditions of münchnones with aryl isothiocyanates is reported. The process takes place with high or complete regioselectivity, and fast and clean transformations are observed under microwave heating in DMF. DFT calculations support that this cycloaddition proceeds preferably through a stepwise mechanism. Given the pattern substitution around the mesoionic ring resulting in a push-pull system, theoretical estimations ...

Background: Polypoid lesions of the gallbladder encompass a wide variety of pathology. Although most of these lesions are benign, some early carcinomas of the gallbladder do present as polypoid lesions. Problems remain in selecting patients with polypoid lesions of the gallbladder for surgery, the operative approach, and the method of follow-up of those deemed not needing surgery. Data sources: This review was done by Medline search of the English literature by the keywords “polypoid lesions of gallbladder,” “ ...

This research aims to evaluate whether a basketball-specific warm-up (Basket-Up) provides immediate benefits in terms of the essential physical performance requirements of basketball and to compare these effects to those obtained from FIFA 11+. In total, 95 highly trained basketball athletes (49 women, 46 men), aged between 13 and 17, were randomly divided to either perform the FIFA 11+ program (n = 48) or the Basket-Up program (n = 47). Immediate evaluation encompassed the assessment of vertical jump (countermovement ...

Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in otherwise healthy neonates frequently requires urgent surgical procedure but anaesthesia care may result in respiratory complications, such as hypoxaemia, pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, and postoperative apnoea. The primary aim was to study whether or not the incidence of difficult airway management and of hypoxaemia in neonates undergoing pyloric stenosis repair was higher than that in neonates undergoing other surgeries.Data on neonates and infants undergoing ...
