The analysis of absorption and fluorescence spectra of poly(ether imide) solutions and related model compounds shows the existence of charge-transfer complexes in poly(ether imide) solutions and in poly(ether imide) solid state. A correlation is established between the fluorescence emission due to charge-transfer complexes and the aggregation state of poly(ether imide) solutions. The kinetics of aggregation of a solution and the aggregate dissociation phenomenon in dilute solution are observed from ...

It is very important to control the characteristics of a polymer used in rubber compositions and paints in aerospace applications. Hence, the development of simple and fast methodologies that allow the identification of these compositions becomes attractive to researches carried out in this area. This study has evaluated infrared (IR) techniques, such as transmission, universal attenuated total reflection (UATR), and attenuated total reflection (ATR), for the characterization of elastomers and paints. ...

The global exploration of snakebites requires the use of quantitative omics approaches to characterize snake venom as it enters into the systemic circulation. These omics approaches give insights into the venom proteome, but a further exploration is warranted to analyze the venom-reactome for the identification of snake venom biomarkers. The recent discovery of extracellular vesicles (EVs), and their critical cellular functions, has presented them as intriguing sources for biomarker discovery and ...

Nine databases (PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, SciELO, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, Open Gray, and Open Thesis) were used as sources of research, including “grey literature.” The protocol was registered in PROSPERO. Only randomized clinical trials evaluating the effects of preemptive intravenous ibuprofen on pain during and immediately after ...

Perfluorocarbons (PFC) are compounds with high gas solubility that could help deliver O2 to tissues and have been suggested as adjunct therapy to ischemia. Using a newly designed in vitro system, we tested the hypothesis that a third generation PFC emulsion (Oxycyte) increased O2 transport of blood by measuring changes in O2 extraction ratio. The system included a computer-controlled pump and blood-gas exchange chambers to oxygenate and deoxygenate the blood from nine sickle cell disease (SCD) patients ...

To determine the students' exposure to four different sedentary behavior (SB) indicators and their associations with gender, grade, age, economic status and physical activity level. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2013. The SB was collected using the HELENA instrument, composed by screen time questions (TV, video games and internet) and sitting activities on school opposite shift. The cut point of ≥2h/day was used to categorize the outcome. The Poisson regression was used for associations ...

The electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is instrumental in a wide variety of phenomena in solid-state physics, such as electrical resistivity in metals, carrier mobility, optical transition, and polaron effects in semiconductors, lifetime of hot carriers, transition temperature in BCS superconductors, and even spin relaxation in diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum information processing. However, due to the weak EPI strength, most phenomena have focused on electronic properties rather than ...

Abstract Thermoelectrics are promising by directly generating electricity from waste heat. However, (sub-)room-temperature thermoelectrics have been a long-standing challenge due to vanishing electronic entropy at low temperatures. Topological materials offer a new avenue for energy harvesting applications. Recent theories predicted that topological semimetals at the quantum limit can lead to a large, non-saturating thermopower and a quantized thermoelectric Hall conductivity approaching a universal ...

Understanding the conditions under which defects appear in self-assembling soft-matter systems is of great importance, for example, in the development of block-copolymer (BCP) nanolithography. Here, we explore the limits of the directed self-assembly of BCPs by deliberately adding random imperfections to the template. Our results show that defects emerge due to local “shear-like” distortions of the polymer–template system, a new mechanism that is fundamentally different from the canonical mechanisms ...

Natural Fibers, when employed as reinforced in composites, contribute to the reduction of environmental impacts, moreover, its use decreases costs and reduces the weight of components. Several studies are carried out for the application of these materials in the automobile industry. Some mechanical behaviors such as elasticity moduli have already been experienced in these types of composites. However, for the use of these materials in quality and safety products, more mechanical information is required. ...

To fertilize, mammalian sperm must complete a maturational process called capacitation. It is thought that the membrane potential of sperm hyperpolarizes during capacitation, possibly due to the opening of K+ channels, but electrophysiological evidence is lacking. In this report, using patch-clamp recordings obtained from isolated mouse spermatogenic cells we document the presence of a novel K+-selective inwardly rectifying current. Macroscopic current activated at membrane potentials below the ...

Over the last years, several researchers have been claiming that team ball sports may be viewed as dynamical systems and, thus, they should be thoroughly investigated using congruent concepts and tools. The study of variability in the sport performance domain has shown potential to contribute with valuable information about tactical behaviours related with space and time management within ever changing task constraints featuring team sports contests. Here we detail how different entropy measures ...

The Cloud to Ground lightning activity is analyzed for the Portugal mainland during the 2003–2009 period. Both inter-annual and intra-annual variability are clearly present. Winter months present a smaller number of Cloud to Ground discharges than the remaining warmer seasons. The highest density of discharges in the colder months is found in the coastal regions. On the contrary, for the remaining seasons, Cloud to Ground discharges tend to occur much more frequently in the interior areas of Portugal. ...

Ischemia/reperfusion of mesenteric vessels is a useful model for acute vascular insufficiency and the early stages of multiorgan failure, conditions associated with high morbidity and mortality. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent mitogen that shows potential for use in intestinal injury. We therefore examined its influence on this model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received human recombinant EGF (2 mg/kg i.p., n = 14) or saline (n = 16); 25 minutes before arterial clamping of the superior mesenteric ...

With the fast increase in the demand for location-based services and the proliferation of smartphones, the topic of indoor localization is attracting great interest. In indoor environments, users’ performed activities carry useful semantic information. These activities can then be used by indoor localization systems to confirm users’ current relative locations in a building. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning model based on a Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) network to classify ...

In breast cancer cells, the linoleic acid (LA), an ω-6 essential polyunsaturated fatty acid, induces a variety of biological processes, including migration and invasion. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are structures released by normal and malignant cells into extracellular space, and their function is dependent on their cargo and the cell type from which are secreted. Particularly, the EVs from MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells treated with LA promote an epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT)-like process ...

We investigate the effect of lattice disorder and local correlation effects in finite and periodic silicene structures caused by carbon doping using first-principles calculations. For both finite and periodic silicene structures, the electronic properties carbon-doped monolayers are dramatically changed by controlling the doping sites in the structures, which is related to the amount of disorder introduced in the lattice and electron-electron correlation effects. By changing the position of the ...
