In the nervous system, both the shape and connectivity of neurons are strongly influenced by soluble, extracellular factors. Indeed, we recently demonstrated that after binding to p75(NTR), the common neurotrophin receptor, nerve growth factor (NGF) controls the morphology and connectivity of cultured mouse hippocampal neurons by encouraging the production of fewer yet longer dendrites, and by augmenting GABAergic connectivity. These effects of NGF are mediated by the differential expression of Enhancer- ...

We present a new method to design prototype filters for conventional cosine-modulated pseudo-quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks. This method is based on windowing, and sets the 3-dB cutoff frequency of the filter obtained at /spl pi//2M. In this way, the filter bank performance can be significantly improved compared to other existing design methods.

Mexico City children are chronically exposed to significant concentrations of air pollutants and exhibit chronic respiratory-tract inflammation. Epidemiological, controlled human exposures, laboratory-based animal models, and in vitro/in vivo studies have shown that inflammatory, endothelial dysfunction, and endothelial damage mediators are upregulated upon exposure to particulate matter (PM). Endothelial dysfunction is a critical event in cardiovascular disease. The focus of this work was to investigate ...

Benign colonic strictures and fistulas are a growing problem presenting most commonly after bowel resection. Standard treatment is with endoscopic bougies or, more usually, balloon dilation. When these approaches are not successful, other solutions are available and different endoscopic and surgical approaches have been used to treat fistulas. We present an additional option--biodegradable stents--for the treatment of colonic strictures and fistulas that have proven refractory to other endoscopic ...

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of social support in the workplace, imbalance and interpersonal conflicts on burnout. The sample consists of 706 nursing professionals. Burnout was estimated by MBI-HSS, social sup- port by a scale of 9 items, imbalance by 5 items and interpersonal conflicts by 6 items. Results in- dicate that social support, imbalance and interper- sonal conflicts were significant predictors of emo- tional exhaustion. Social support and interper- sonal conflicts ...

The analysis of DNA sequences through information theory methods is reviewed from the beginning in the 70s. The subject is addressed within a broad context, describing in some detail the cornerstone contributions in the field. The emerging interest concerning long-range correlations and the mosaic structure of DNA sequences is considered from our own point of view. A recent procedure developed by the authors is also outlined.

The present study was aimed to examine hemispheric differences on somatosensory brain processing in individuals with bilateral CP and lateralized ...

This paper presents a new method to measure the surface tension and the contact angle of a liquid. The measurement procedure comprises three steps: acquisition of the liquid drop image, image segmentation to obtain the contour of the drop and surface-tension and contact-angle calculation by the ADSA method. In the second step a new segmentation method is used based on the Jensen-Shannon divergence, an entropic measurement of coherence among distribution probabilities. The advantages of using this ...

A new complexity measure, based on the entropic segmentation of DNA sequences into compositionally homogeneous domains, is proposed. Sequence compositional complexity (SCC) deals directly with the complex heterogeneity in nonstationary DNA sequences. The plot of SCC as a function of significance level provides a profile of sequence structure at different length scales. SCC is found to be higher in sequences with long-range correlation than those without, and higher in noncoding sequences than coding ...

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of death in patients over 60years with Huntington's disease (HD). Here, we investigated if age-related oxidative stress (OS) is a relevant factor to develop cardiac damage in an in vivo model of striatal neurodegeneration induced by 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP). We also evaluated the potential effect of tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) to increase the Nrf2-regulated antioxidant response in hearts from adult and aged rats intoxicated with 3-NP. ...

Summary Mitogen‐activated kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways are involved in several important processes related to the development and virulence of Fusarium oxysporum . Reversible phosphorylation of the protein members of these pathways is a major regulator of essential biological processes. Among the phosphatases involved in dephosphorylation of MAPKs, type 2C protein phosphatases (PP2Cs) play important roles regulating many developmental strategies and stress responses in yeasts. Nevertheless, the ...

Background: Evidence-based clinical guidelines consider physical exercise one of the best nonpharmacological interventions for low-back pain (LBP), but it is necessary to clarify the exercise-induced hypoalgesia effect of different modalities of exercise in chronic pain populations. Purpose: This study focused on exploring acute changes in tactile and pressure-pain perception and lumbar strength and flexibility in patients with nonspecific chronic LBP (NSCLBP) after performing one of three 20-minute ...

Focal irradiation of epileptic foci has been performed in a group of 6 epileptic patients, of whom 2 presented with epilepsy and 4 with epileptic psychoses. The epileptic focus was localized by means of conventional scalp EEG, electrocorticography and stereoelectroencephalography. Radiosurgery was performed by coupling a stereoguide to a 60Co unit using a 10-mm diameter collimator. An estimated dose of 10 Gy was administered. Results are presented and the mechanism of action of radiation discussed.
