This chapter discusses the preliminary results and potential for integrated stratigraphy of the volcano-sedimentary sequence in the Boso peninsula, Central Japan. The thick sequence of fossiliferous Neogene and Pleistocene marine sediments in the Boso Peninsula of Central Japan is one of the most promising sites in Japan for studies of Neogene geology and micropalaeontology. This sequence contains only one stratigraphic break (the Kurotaki Unconformity) and may provide a continuous stratigraphic ...

Unique planar structures made of thin, dark bands in host siltstones were described at microscopic scale in samples collected from the Tenryu Canyon in the eastern Nankai accretionary prism. Their mechanisms of formation and tectonic relationships were compared with similar onshore examples from the unmetamorphosed Miocene–Pliocene Miura–Boso accretionary prism. Four modes of occurrences that had been identified previously in onshore rocks were recognized in the submarine rock samples. The dark ...

The present study was conducted to examine the occurrence and distribution of early juvenile land hermit crabs of the genus Coenobita on a small beach on the Boso Peninsula, Japan as a basis for understanding the important habitats that land hermit crabs use during the sea-to-land transition. The survey sites were supratidal zones at six points with heterogeneous topography, and visual surveys for early juveniles were conducted from middle July to late October in 2015 and 2016. The number of empty ...

Along the southern coast of the Boso Peninsula, located about 80km south of Tokyo, have developed Holocene coastal terraces, which were elucidated to have been uplifted by tectonic movements associated with major earthquakes (Sugimura & Naruse, 1954; Matsuda et al., 1974). Some of these coastal terraces are composed of marine sediments, about 20m thick, whose facies changes reflect the fluctuation of sea-level relative to the land. The author has investigated these terraces to clarify the role of tectonic ...

The Obitsu and the Yoro rivers are located in the central part of the Boso Peninsula. Meandsring valleys and many strath river terraces are developed well in the upper to middle courses of both rivers. On the basis of the topographic classification of those terracces by the aerial photo interpretation, the past developmental process of valley incision can be deduced from the distribution characters of those terraces. The past developmental process of the Alluvium deposition in the lower courses ...

The Boso Peninsula is located in East Japan north of the Sagami Trough, which has historically given tsunamigenic earthquakes. We have selected the southern part of the peninsula, namely the villages of Aihama and Mera, which belong to the city of Tateyama, and used a tsunami vulnerability assessment tool (Papathoma Tsunami Vulnerability Assessment model) for 358 buildings located there, for a tsunami scenario with a maximum run-up of 10 m. Additionally, we applied a building population estimation ...

Diatom biostratigraphy is established for the Middle Miocene Kinone and lower Amatsu Formations in Boso Peninsula, central Japan. Diatom zones of Denticulopsis lauta Zone through D. praedimorpha Zone are recognized in 15 calcareous nodules out of 79 collected samples in the study area. The middle and upper part of the Kinone Formation is assigned to Denticulopsis lauta and Denticulopsis hyalina Zones. The Crucidenticula nicobarica Zone is recognized at around the boundary between Kinone and Amatsu ...

1) This research was carried out, in order to clarify the stratigraphic relationship between the Katsuura and the Kurotaki Formations, particular attention being given to the tephra key bed known in the Katsuura district, which is named Kr in this article. The tephra key bed, outcropping in the area around Kasugadai and the Katsuura Bridge, in Katsuura city, was dealt as typical Kr.2) In the eastern part of the area, the strike of Kr runs NNE-SSW, but ENEWSW in the western part. Densities of nucleation sites of clinopyroxene, plagioclase and spherulite were measured and their morphologies were observed from the core to the outer parts of a pillow lava of tholeiitic basalt collected at Awa-Kamogawa, Boso Peninsula. Systematic changes of nucleation densities and morphologies were observed, which were interpreted in terms of the sample's cooling history. It was concluded that the lava had solidified within an hour, and that changes in nucleation densities and morphology represented ...

River Maruyama and River Wada are located in southern part of Boso Peninsula, Along both rivers, One Pleistocene terrace and three Holocene terrace series can be observed. Upper Holocene terrace (Maruyama I terrace) is distributed widely from the upper to lower course. By field observations of terrace deposits, Maruyama I terrace is thought to be the fluvial fill-top terrace. Only in the lower course, drowned valley had been formed and marine silt and clay with shell fragements had been deposited ...

ABSTRACT Two chromatic morphs of Pagurus lanuginosus de Haan, 1849, of Imafuku and Ikeda (1995) are here recognized as 2 distinct species: the black spot morph is referred to true P. lanuginosus, and the white spot morph is described herein as a new species, P. maculosus. The range of P. maculosus appears restricted to the Pacific coast of the Japanese main islands from Boso Peninsula to Amakusa, Kyushu. Pagurus lanuginosus is considered to be more widely distributed in the Japanese main islands, Korea, and the Russian coast of ...

This paper is a preliminary report of the landslide in the southern part of BOSO Peninsula at Soro Village. The landslide of Soro Village, situated 6 km., west of the town of Kamo-gawa, occurred on May 23, 1952 near the top of Mineokn Mountain and gradually enlarged and extended itself down the slope. The mechanics of the landslide may be explained as follows 1) The serpentine was distributed in the vicinity of the divide of Mineoka Mountain and was weathered in depth. When a great amount of ground- ...
