ABSTRACT A bed of well sorted limestone pebble conglomerate one meter thick and over 175 m long exposed among Ordivician argillites at Cap-des-Rosiers contains from base upwards 7 zones, each with distinct depositional features: Zone 1--carbonate sandstone infilling sole marks; Zone 2--imbricated coarse-grained pebble conglomerate; Zone 3--coarse grained pebble conglomerate without preferred clast orientation; Zone 4--coarse-grained pebble conglomerate with clasts orientated parallel to the Zone ...

Carboniferous sedimentation in the southern Gaspé Peninsula has fossilized a paleosurface which is now gradually being exhumed by erosion. Part of the surface was horizontally cut by a major peneplanation event that took place between 290 Ma (Permian) and 200 Ma (Jurassic). Exhumation of the surface below the peneplanation line must also have started by Jurassic time in response to the en bloc uplift of the evolving Atlantic Ocean's passive margins. Some geomorphic features of the exhumed paleosurface ...

The Middle Paleozoic rocks deformed by the Acadian orogeny in the Gaspé Peninsula are divided into three major structural zones, from north to south: (1) the Connecticut Valley-Gaspé synclinorium, (2) the Aroostook-Percé anticlinorium, and (3) the Chaleurs Bay synclinorium. These three structural zones were part of a single depositional belt, the Gaspé Belt, located mainly to the south of the Baie Verte-Brompton Line over the Dunnage Zone.

Cloridorme Formation is proposed as a new name to replace the time-stratigraphic usage of Normanskill Formation for the upper Middle Ordovician rocks of northern Gaspé Peninsula. Detailed physical stratigraphy in excellent exposures along the Gaspé coast permits subdivision of the formation, clarifies the structural pattern of the coastal belt, and delineates the source area of these rocks.

The Baie Verte – Brompton Line (BBL), the surface expression of the Taconian suture in the Canadian Appalachian Orogen, extends from southern Quebec to the northeast end of Newfoundland. In the Quebec Appalachians, the BBL was previously located under the post-Taconian cover rocks between the Eastern Townships and Gaspé Peninsula. New geological data and reinterpretation of gravimetric and aeromagnetic data suggest that the BBL follows the southern edge of the Cambrian–Ordovician rocks of northern ...

Abstract Stable colonization of the Gaspe Peninsula by Europeans started in the middle of the 18th century at the time of the British conquest of New France. The earliest settlers were Acadians, escaping British deportation policies, followed by Loyalists from the US, who preferred to remain under British rule after the Declaration of Independence. In the 19th century, the developing fishing industry attracted French Canadians from the St. Lawrence Valley and newcomers from Europe including Channel ...

Clay mineral investigations, pyrolysis of organic matter, and microscopic observation of palynomorphs are used to interpret the diagenetic conditions of the Upper Devonian Escuminac Formation, Quebec, Canada. Pyrolysis of kerogen, vitrinite reflectance, and the presence of smectite show that the sediments of this formation have been subjected only to a shallow burial diagenesis; hence, the geochemical signatures are informative on the palaeoenvironment. Concretions are observed in the Escuminac ...

Abstract Illite crystallinity (IC) measurements, determination of the proportion of 2M mica‐polytypes and organic‐matter reflectance measurements establish regional diagenetic/low‐grade metamorphic trends for the Taconian and Acadian belts of Gaspé Peninsula. IC varies as a function of many factors besides maximum burial temperature and heating time. Correlation between IC and %2M illite polytypes for the Fortin Group and Temiscouata Formation suggests (i) that the amount of high‐grade detrital mica ...

The Early Devonian (Emsian) vertebrate fauna of the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec (Canada) shows close affinity with the Emsian fauna from the Atholville beds, New Brunswick (Canada). Specimens collected in the early 2000s from several localities in central Gaspé include molds of tooth whorls and isolated teeth that we assign to the stem chondrichthyan Doliodus. Isolated teeth of this taxon were first described from the Atholville beds in the late 1800s by Arthur Smith Woodward, who erected a new species ...
