Abstract The stratigraphy of the Taman Peninsula is defined using the sections at Zelensky Hill — Panagia, Popov Kamen, Taman and Zheleznyi Rog. The stratigraphy is constructed from distribution of mollusks, foraminifers, nannofossils, diatoms, and organic-walled phytoplankton, as well as incorporating paleomagnetic data. The occurrence of oceanic diatom species in the Middle-Upper Sarmatian, Maeotian and Lower Pontian makes a direct correlation possible between the sections studied, the Mediterranean ...

Upper Maeotian-Lower Pontian "Transitional Strata" in the Taman Peninsula: stratigraphic position and paleogeographic interpretation Three sections (Taman, Popov Kamen, and Zheleznyi Rog) of the Upper Maeotian-Lower Pontian sediments of the Taman Peninsula (Eastern Paratethys) have been studied. The sequences represent continuous successions of the Maeotian and Pontian sediments. The transitional Upper Maeotian-Lower Pontian relatively deep-water sediments were formed at the time when Eastern Paratethys ...

The temporal and spatial diffusion of early agriculture across Europe from the Fertile Crescent has been widely studied, but data from the Caucasian corridor are still rare. This study shows the first evidence for the cultivation of cereals and anthropogenic fires in southern Russia, between the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, 7000 years ago. It suggests that the Caucasian corridor contributed to the spread of agricultural practices throughout the steppes of Eurasia. This study also shows the strong ...

A study of the Upper Miocene deposits on the Taman Peninsula revealed a new centric diatom Thalassiosira kozyrenkoae Kovaleva et Gogorev. The absence of findings of this species in the modern diatom flora suggests that it is extinct. The species was likely endemic for the Sea of Azov – the Black Sea basin. Single findings of valve fragments in the New Azov layers make it possible to use T. kozyrenkoae as a stratigraphic marker and to estimate the distribution extent of the Neogene sediments from the ...

The prevailing view is that the cause of significant changes in the shape of the Taman Peninsula during the past 2500 years is sea-level fluctuations. In our opinion, the leading role in the process of topography restructuring belongs to the tectonic factor. Therefore paleogeographic reconstructions made so far need to be evaluated and refined. This article is devoted to study the hydrographic network of the region. The presence of fresh water sources in ancient times is the main point when choosing ...

... in the ancient Greek city of Phanagoria (the Taman Peninsula). It has been established that rocks of various compositions were used for the construction: volcanic, plutonic, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The composition of the building stone varies depending on the age of the foundation. The youngest building (340–350 BCE) is dominated by organogenic limestones from the Kerch-Taman region. In the oldest foundations (525–550 BCE), ...
