Abstract Freziera atlantica is described and illustrated. The species resembles F. grisebachii in terms of the size and shape of its leaves but differs especially by the serrate and villous margin of the leaf blade and larger petals. The new species is known from two disjunct localities in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, in extremely endangered environments. All known specimens of F. atlantica were collected within the last three years. This new generic record for the Brazilian Atlantic Forest highlights ...

Abstract Sex change affects the sex ratios of plant populations and may play an essential role in the evolutionary shift of sexual systems. Sex change can be a strategy for increasing fitness over the lifetime of a plant, and plant size, environmental factors, and growth rate may affect sex change. We described frequent, repeated sex changes following various patterns in a subdioecious Eurya japonica population over five successive years. Of the individuals, 27.5% changed their sex at least once, ...

Freziera Willd. is a Neotropical genus of functionally dioecious trees or shrubs with alternate leaves and lenticellate, often pubescent twigs sometimes organized in a zig-zag fashion. The genus is distributed from Mexico to Bolivia, including the Guayana Highlands, and the West Indies (Weitzman, 1987). Species of Freziera mainly occur in cloud forest (1000–3200 m) and sometimes in paramos, although some species may have a wider altitudinal range, from near sea level to middle elevation forests at ...

The new species is compared with morphologically similar species and distinguished from them by a unique combination of characters, among them, notably the villous abaxial surface of the petals, ovary, and immature fruits, a feature otherwise, at present, unknown in the other species of the genus Freziera.

We describe and illustrate three new species of Freziera collected from the “ceja de monte yungueña” cloud forests in Bolivia and Peru. Freziera apolobambensis and F. erickitae, both endemic to Bolivia, have small leaves and pink-magenta flowers, whereas F. magnibracteolata, found in Peru and Bolivia, is characterized by its adaxially pubescent leaves with whitish beige trichomes and inflorescences with large bracts and bracteoles.
