Background. Mineral bone disorder (MBD) is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) even during the early stages. Bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) is a marker of bone formation and plays a pivotal role in the mineralization process. Three BALP isoforms (B/I, B1 and B2) have been identified in healthy individuals and a fourth isoform (B1x) has been discovered in serum from dialysis patients. We investigated these BALP isoforms, type I procollagen intact amino-terminal propeptide (PINP), carboxy- ...

Persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is believed to be a prerequisite for the development of cervical neoplasia. Persistence may depend on certain characteristics, such as viral load, which has so far been given little attention. We investigated the association between HPV 16 viral load and cervical carcinoma in situ.We did a nested case-control study of women participating in cytological screening in Sweden. We used a sensitive quantitative PCR assay to estimate ...

Abstract Moderate heritability for skeletal muscle strength has been reported in twin studies, but genetic co‐variation between muscle strength at different parts of body and body size is not well known. Further, representativeness of twin cohorts needs to be critically evaluated. Height, weight, elbow flexion, hand grip and knee extension strength were measured in young adulthood in 1,139,963 Swedish men born between 1951 and 1976. We identified 154,970 full‐brother pairs and 1582 monozygotic (MZ) ...

Hip strength assessment plays an important role in the clinical examination of the hip and groin region. The primary aim of this study was to examine the absolute test–retest measurement variation concerning standardized strength assessments of hip abduction (ABD), adduction (ADD), external rotation (ER), internal rotation (IR), flexion (FLEX) and extension (EXT) using a hand‐held dynamometer. Nine subjects (five males, four females), physically active for at least 2.5 h a week, were included. Twelve standardized ...

Background: An ipsilateral hip adduction/abduction strength ratio of more than 90%, and hip adduction strength equal to that of the contralateral side have been suggested to clinically represent adequate strength recovery of hip adduction strength in athletes after groin injury. However, to what extent side-to-side symmetry in isometric hip adduction and abduction strength can be assumed in soccer players remains uncertain. Purpose: To compare isometric hip adduction and abduction strength on the ...

The side‐lying hip abduction exercise is one of the most commonly used exercises in rehabilitation to increase hip abduction strength, and is often performed without external loading. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 6 weeks of side‐lying hip abduction training, with and without external loading, on hip abduction strength in healthy subjects. Physical fitness and muscular strength are important performance factors for Olympic class sailors, but the physical demands vary greatly between yacht classes, and limited information is available regarding the physical demands for the different crew positions. In the present paper, strength and aerobic capacity data from elite Olympic sailors are presented and compared with previous findings. Furthermore, a system for classification of Olympic class sailors is suggested. Peak aerobic capacity ( ...

New observations in the spectrum of P III have been made in the wave-length region 200-9 800 Å by using a sliding spark in vacuum. The term system now includes 58 complete terms, 36 of which are new and some more completed or resolved. It is based on about 640 spectrum lines, some 530 of which are newly classified. About 10% of the lines are intercombinations fixing the quartet and doublet systems relative to each other. The whole system has been recalculated on the basis of the new measurements. ...

The spectrum of quadruply ionized phosphorus has been studied in the wavelength region 200-9 800 Å by using a sliding spark in vacuum. A total of 126 spectrum lines have been measured and classified, 88 of which are new. The term system has been recalculated and new terms added. The polarization formula applied to nf, ng and nh gives an ionization limit of 524 462.9 ± 1.0 cm -1 and a dipole polarizability of the core 2 s 2 2 p 6 of 0.0949 a 0 3 .

New observations in the P II spectrum have been made in the wavelength region 500-12 000 Å. The spectrum was excited in two different ways, using a high-frequency lamp and a sliding spark in vacuum. The term system now includes 159 levels and about 900 identified lines, which means a doubling of the number of levels and identified transitions. The energy of the lowest limit, 3s2 3p2P, is derived from ng-series, which are all new. A linear Ritz formula gives the value 160 010.6 cm-1 for the 2P3/2 ...

Quantitative comparisons between observed and theoretical wavelengths and intensity ratios are made to confirm the identification of some emission lines observed in the spectra of Na- and Mg-like ions as electric quadrupole (E2) transitions. The transition rates of these lines connecting D symmetry levels and the ground level are calculated using the multi-configuration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) wavefunctions.
