Reared eggs and field-collected material were employed to describe the development of the pelagic eggs and larvae of Emmelichthys nitidus (Emmelichthyidae), a small (36 cm TL) mid-water schooling species common in shelf waters of temperate Australia. Hydrated oocytes from adults trawled from spawning grounds off eastern Tasmania were fertilized and reared to the yolk-sac larval stage, and the data employed to build a temperature-dependent egg incubation model. Embryogenesis lasted 96, 84 and 54 h ...

Anderson (2018) published an annotated checklist of anthiadine fishes with information on the 29 genera and 226 species then considered valid. Since then there have been a number of publications on the systematics of anthiadines, including descriptions of 23 new species and one new genus. Herein, data on those new taxa and emended accounts of others are presented.

The new species Tosanoidesannepatrice sp. n. is described from four specimens collected at depths of 115–148 m near Palau and Pohnpei in Micronesia. It differs from the other three species of this genus in life color and in certain morphological characters, such as body depth, snout length, anterior three dorsal-fin spine lengths, caudal-fin length, and other characters. There are also genetic differences from the other four species of Tosanoides (d ≈ 0.04–0.12 in mtDNA cytochrome oxidase I). This ...

Understanding the factors shaping population genetic structure is important for evolutionary considerations as well as for management and conservation. While studies have revealed the importance of palaeogeographic changes in shaping phylogeographic patterns in multiple marine fauna, the role of reproductive behaviour is rarely considered in reef fishes. We investigated the population genetics of three commercially important aggregating grouper species in the Indo-West Pacific, namely the camouflage ...

In late July/early August 2015, ichthyologists from the Bishop Museum collecting fishes off Pohnpei in the Caroline Islands group, western Pacific Ocean, obtained specimens of two undescribed species of Grammatonotus. The other, G. pelipel, is distinctive in having the following combination of characters: disjunct lateral line, barred pattern of ...

Hormonal induction of spotted sand bass Paralabrax maculatofasciatus, was investigated in order to induce and synchronize spawning. Three experiments were conducted using wild fish captured in the Gulf of California: 1) LHRHa (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue) induced spawning with concentrations of 25, 50, 100 µg kg-1 and saline solution, 2) Effects of LHRHa on motility and sperm density, and 3) Induction and incubation of spawns obtained using LHRHa. In experiments 2 and 3 using concentrations ...

Reproduction of Mugil cephalus of the Pacific coast of Mexico was studied. Fish were captured with gill nets and cast nets; they are a common low priced product for local consumption. The study of the reproduction period and ages of first maturity helps manage the fishery. Fish were obtained from local commercial fishery from August to December 2007, January to March 2008 and November 2012 to October 2013. Size and weight, sex and gonad maturity were registered. The male:female ratio was 0.88:1. ...

The complete mitochondrial genome of Eleutheronema tetradactylum was determined, which was the first complete mitochondrial genome in Polynemidae family. The mitochondrial genome was 16,474 base pairs in length, encoding a standard set of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 tRNA genes and 2 main non-coding regions (the control region and the origin of the light strand replication). The overall base composition of E. tetradactylum is A 27.2%, C 29.9%, G 17.0% and T 25.9%, with a slight ...

Haemulidae species are morphologically diversified fishes with wondrous and changeable coloration. These species are prevalent in global tropical, subtropical, and temperate inshore reef areas. Previous morphological classification within Haemulidae and some related families was problematic, and no comprehensive molecular evaluation was conducted on these groups. In this study, we revealed the first molecular phylogenetic analysis involving representative species within Haemulidae and the relevant ...

Diadromous fish species in the family Kuhliidae are able to colonise freshwater systems in Indo-Pacific islands, but their life cycle and the mechanisms involved in the colonisation of such ecosystems are poorly documented. After validating the daily rate of increment deposition in otoliths of Kuhlia rupestris, we estimated the pelagic larval duration (PLD) of K. rupestris, widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific area, and K. sauvagii, endemic to the Indian Ocean. Median PLD of K. rupestris was significantly ...

Abstract – Strontium/Calcium (Sr/Ca) and Barium/Calcium (Ba/Ca) ratios were measured in 60 otoliths of the French Polynesian flagtail Kuhlia malo . Both elemental ratios were needed to correctly distinguish residence in marine, brackish and fresh water. High Sr/Ca and low Ba/Ca around the nucleus of all otoliths provided evidence of marine residency during the early life of all individuals. At about 0.5 mm from the core, Ba/Ca increased rapidly and remained high in all otoliths. High and unstable Sr/Ca ...
